Hi Tyler,

I am sure you have seen what Joe has done with Victor Hovland's wedge game. It seems to be a bit different from what you teach especially as regards the angle of attack. What are your views?

Thanks,

Hey Dirk,

I have seen some of the videos that Joe Mayo has posted regarding Victor's short game. I think if you boil it down, the movements he teaches and the movements I teach are more similar than different. I think his emphasis on a double-digit angle of attack isn't as universal as he claims. From talking with others who have lots of access to Tour Pro Wedge data, I'd say 7 degrees is a more likely average, with some people closer to 3-4 just as others are more in the 12-13 range. It seems to me that angle of attack isn't the key to the puzzle, so much as controlling the depth of the swing to avoid digging. For that, the handle height and body movement away from the ground are more important and a bigger part of my 3 pillars of wedge play. That said, I think Joe's a great instructor. I have lots of respect for him and wish him well.

Happy Golfing,
Tyler
