Arms wrist first or hips/body

  By: Garrett F on Oct. 25, 2020, 3:47 p.m.

Hi guys- so I’ve had a number of online lessons and a bit into analysis paralysis. Some teachers are saying I need to work on shallowing and getting right elbow in front and that will clear up body issues . Others saying hips don’t work correctly/deep enough on backswing and improper transition causing arm/wrist problems. Honestly I’ve had limited improvements partly because I don’t feel like I understand what I should work on first.

I’d like to commit to one teacher going forward and this seems like best online platform.

Here are some swings..

Hi Garrett,

Welcome to the site! Looking at your swing, I would go first at the body. You get into a pretty solid follow-through position, and while your transition is a bit narrow, I think the body movements are more likely to cause your inconsistency. Here are a few frames I'd focus on. Also, when there are two things a person needs to work on in a swing, I'll say, "let's try both and see which improves the video and is the easiest to do".

When describing your scenario, I'd usually work from shot tendencies backward. I'm guessing that because you posted two driver swings and one iron, that your main goal is improving your driving consistency? I can see why some would focus on the trail elbow, but you do a good job of not steepening much. You do this by letting your hand come off the club similar to a Jim Furyk, Fred Couples, or Shane Lowry. So I'd go more after the pivot first. I think the trail knee early extension and vertical posture could contribute to a bigger miss tendency (likely pulls). Check out these videos and drills to help stay in your posture better.

PS - Your vertical posture move is a shallow move, and your lack of axis tilt is a steep move. So if you stay in your posture better (steep) you'll be able to add some axis tilt (shallow) which will help with a later arc width and better clubface control.
