Core sequencing/lead shoulder jammed up

Hi Tyler!

I’m becoming more satisfied with my arm and wrist movements for the moment and shifting focus on my core. Any idea why my shoulders are all up around my ears? This is a pretty common look for me. I’m not even sure where in the swing this originates; I can’t make it happen on purpose, but if I had to assign it a sensation it would be that I don’t have enough room.

Logic dictates that my upper center is too close to the ball. Is that correct?
Does it go back to thoracic spine extension? Trail scap protraction? I’m trying to tidy up my scaps during the backswing but those seem to be my bugaboos in general.

Thanks in advance!

Zach

The shoulder shrug in the follow through is a common trait of golfers who lack significant upper thoracic spine extension through the release. So yes, you read the image correctly. Here are a couple of examples of golfers who share that trait. It's not my favorite move, but it's also not the end of the world either.

It's REALLY hard to get great scap retraction without addressing the upper thoracic spine extension first. The rib cage sets the angle for the scap to work on, and if it's too rounded, the scaps are fighting an uphill battle.

Happy Golfing,
Tyler
