Help for a Junior Getting Stuck

  By: Ara A on July 16, 2020, 10:42 a.m.

Hi GSA

My junior has gone from having a beautiful, athletic, balanced turn to getting very stuck on the downswing. Really frustrating to see him struggle with inconsistency and power loss. I see him really shut on the backswing and at the top, and wondering if that leads to what I am seeing on the downswing - or is there something else or downswing match-up that will help? Any help would be appreciated to get him back on track!

One of the challenges with juniors is how much their swings can change. I once had a student shift his swing from a (-9) swing path to a (+12) after a 2-week vacation. He had no idea why it changed, but his swing was completely different. This extreme example highlights that when working with juniors, it's important to help them know that their swing will always change month to month and the goal of playing golf is to have a process to solve any problem and get it back on track as quickly as possible.

It looks like in the older video that he still had a closed clubface at the top. But he had a much more body-centric and flatter move. Perhaps he hit a growth spurt and feels more powerful with his upper body, leading to the steeper transition move that doesn't match his club face. I'd work on some path and sequence drills and maybe even show him the videos you posted here to help him see why he's more inconsistent now. Good luck and keep us posted,
