New Member - Swing Help

I have been golfing for many years. Turns out, the more I become a student of this game, the more I realize I have been doing it mostly wrong all of these years. I have only had one lesson from my local pro. He had me work on the stick extender drill which looks like I could use some more of. I struggle with low point control. I tend to be a picker of the ball and miss with a pull hook mostly. I would really like to learn how to incorporate more of my lower body into my swing, but I just cannot feel it. I am basically re-building my swing from the ground up. I would really like to improve my consistency of contact. I have been trying to de-program a very dominant shoulder pull I developed along the way to generate power due, I am sure, to the lack of lower body involvement. Anyway.... any help is much appreciated.

Also, I apologize about the frame rate. I am a little challenged with this video work. If I need to, I can try to record again with a faster frame rate. But I think you'll see enough to get me started. Again, Thank you!

Hi Marty,

I think it's quite common for golfers to develop a swing they think is "wrong". The motion isn't as intuitive as those in many other sports. I think there are a number of good components in your swing. You do a pretty good job of maintaining your spine angle and keeping a stable center of your swing. You do a good job of keeping width in the arms during the release. But I do think you have a couple of matchups that you could work on. The big one is the steeper arms and shallow body.

Whenever there's a matchup, and I'm not sure of the main cause, I usually like to do some shorter swings, or easy swings, to see when it breaks down. Maybe you could film a 9-3 to see if you can get into a more open-body position. If you can, then it makes it seem like transition, and delivery position, is the bigger area to train. But if we start by looking at impact, we can see that contact/low point would be improved by getting a little more body rotation and working on the impact line.

PS - the frame rate isn't great, so we can't see the club face contribution, but I think we can still get started improving it without better frame rate. Let me see the 9-3 when you get a chance.

Happy Golfing,

Okay I recorded a 9 to 3ish swing followed by an easy swing both down the line and caddy view. After watching the video I see what you are talking about regarding the impact line; my hands are not in line with my left side at impact and I noticed a little flippy, chickenwingie, non-rotational thing going on too. I played today and struggled with misses left - pulls not hooks. I also had shots ballooning on me, probably due to the flippy hands back impact. Anyway, please take a look and let me know where you think I should start. I have a good idea: impact line, rotation, release, etc.

Thank you in advance.

I think you have it nailed. It looks like a release issue with the common pattern of misses (high ball flight, left misses, contact issues). So, if I were you, I'd work on my release with 9-3's as the main practice focus.

In the attached DTL picture, you'll see how high the right shoulder is and how low the lead shoulder is. I think a big component of this pattern is related to the shoulders through impact. Check out this recent video if you haven't seen it already. https://www.golfsmartacademy.com/golf-instruction/connecting-scapular-alignment-impact-alignment/

Otherwise, some standard release ideas are a good starting point. Could do right arm and left arm only. Or a shaft extender. Or a push ball drill and follow through hold to hone in some new feels. Lot's of good options in the release videos on this site :)

Happy Golfing,
