Swing Request : analysis paralysis

Hi Tyler,

Continuing to work through the videos and models and was hoping you could take a look at my swing. I’m very much stuck thinking about all sorts of concepts and which I should approach first. That over analyzing is leading to poor play. How would you diagnose and where should I be focusing?

Driver misses: 1-3 unplayable rope hooks, Inconsistent contact on face (misses are always high on face and seem steep)

Iron misses: fats, inconsistent strike, deep divots

Hi Garrett,

Based on your description, especially the iron issues, I would probably start with a face on video instead of down the line. From the down the line, it looks like a version of steeper upper body motion and more shallow lower body motion. I'd probably start with impact and follow through and focus on pulling less with the shoulder blades and more with the core. The shoulder blade dominance fits the pattern of 1-3 hooks, contact issues with the irons, and mostly toe misses. Given that pattern, I'd use the face-on video with a focus on impact and follow-through as my measuring stick for what to prioritize. Please post it here when you get a chance.

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions,

Tyler

Hi Garrett,

Thanks for the videos. They help.

With the driver, I think the early extension and trail arm being fully straight at impact is the big cause of the hook pattern. You can see in the first picture, compared to the spine angle I drew at set up, your posture is much more vertical and your trail arm is straight. When the trail arm is straight at impact it's almost impossible to control the clubface with any club head speed. It sounds like you do it really well, but 1-3 big misses with that position seems expected. If you decide changing the pivot is too difficult, then I'd really work on tempo/sequence to help keep that arm timing consistent.

With the iron, your upper body is too far behind your lower body. You don't recenter enough early in the downswing and then it just stays there. Typically when you're back, that also causes you to go down (because of the tilt and the way the hips work) which causes the low point issues. So with the iron, it work on the impact line and getting your upper body to cover the lower body better in transition.

happy golfing,
Tyler
