What to focus on?

  By: Matthew D on May 6, 2024, 12:57 p.m.

Hello,
If you could help me figure out what to focus on I'd appreciate it. My feeling is that I would like less flip, more shaft lean, and that my issues are poor wipe, too much arms not enough rotation, will need more motorcycle, and more in to out (ideally from body rotation?), and probably need more separation and more upper body takeaway.
Thanks Matt

Hi Matt,

There are some good elements in your swing. But I think the most glaring issue to me is the amount of early upper body rotation. Your shoulders appear to rotate as soon, or even ahead of, the lower body right away. This causes the path to get a little steep and compliments some of the elements that you see in your release. So a big part of your journey will be figuring out what body rotation means in the golf swing. Your brain's current interpretation appears to be mostly upper-body driven.

The more recent swing does look likes getting better. Take a look at your shoulders and arms. So it seems like you're on the right track.

I've posted some recent videos on the topic, check out this one to see if it connects with what you've been working on and feeling. https://www.golfsmartacademy.com/golf-instruction/decoding-your-scapular-feel/

I feel like I've learned a ton, but still struggling. Here is a post of a practice swing, then a real swing right after. Is the practice swing a good goal, or should I be changing some other things? I think I've got some psychological issues with 'hitting' that are causing me to 'cast?' - rotate with the shoulders, not flattening the club. I feel like I can see that immediately in the transition in the real swing where the shoulder, club and hands go away from target right off the bat without shallowing.
Thoughts? Thanks, really enjoying the videos!

This is my 'Full Swing' and I know I over swing and need to think more 10-2 for my 'Full Swing', but wanted to put this version on video as I think it magnifies my errors.
I feel that my Right Arm is a big problem, and have been working on the wipe.
Today I watched the 'Details of the Trail Arm Line' video and it really helped.
I realize in the DTL video that at the end of my backswing my right arm comes out and I think that causes me to loose my connection and I end up rotating my shoulder and arm poorly and have both wrist and arm shoulder issues. practicing with just the trail arm seems to help a lot.

Worked on Single Arm Drills, Lead arm was really disconnected.
Worked on Push Ball drill, able to do better now = more body less arms.
Worked on MGR drill, Getting to left better Jackson 5, and different hip extension through body earlier.
Feel like it's getting much better.

Here is my Thai Chi style body movement only attempt for how I think I want my body to move. I know I don't have a strong Jackson 5 move in it, but I feel in the past I have slid my hips too far. I am a little concerned that my hips might be getting a little stuck and stalling but am hoping it's after impact and won't be an issue at full speed with a club. I'm trying hard to not have my right shoulder come across, and to keep my shoulders parallel to ground (Not left shoulder up too early) and in line with target.
Thoughts? Thanks!

Sorry for the delay, I gave a speech to a group of instructors at the TPI Summit this past weekend and I was busy prepping for my presentation.

With the tai chi move, I’d try to keep the shoulder blades closed a little longer, that’s why when you get to parallel your hips and shoulders are parallel to each other and the upper body looks like it could be more closed in the follow through. Otherwise it looks pretty solid.

Then in the actual swing, the shoulders are a little early and dominant, which gives the look of the left shoulder being more in and down between impact and follow through. To not pull with the shoulder will likely feel like the lead arm/shoulder stays higher much longer.
