Wrist hinge - irons vs driver

  By: Rob J on Oct. 25, 2023, 7:41 a.m.

I am a 6 handicap. I have been tending to hit my irons thin this season, with little to no divots. Driver and long clubs have been relatively good, since my swing focus has been a "low and slow" takeaway, resulting in more of a sweeping motion which seems to work well with driver. However, I think this is causing issues with short irons and thinning. Lately I have been trying to get more wrist hinge with irons, trying to get the club more vertical on takeaway, and it seems to be working well. Resulting in good divots and more consistent shots. I watched your video on excess hinging and am conscious of that.

Question that I have now is, should I have more hinge in my driver swing as well? I haven't tried this yet, but am curious. think the answer is no, but wanted to get your thoughts. It seems that more hinge allows for more power, but I suspect with driver this would cause issues with swing plane etc.

Hi Rob,

A sweeping motion causing thin shots with the short irons sounds very plausible. I usually try to improve the contact by covering the ball better with the upper body (feeling more stacked over the lead foot). But if it's easier to add some wrist hinge, it should help the thin contact. Having too much wrist hinge is risky for the driver. Some golfers use it as a power source, but they often have more excessive tilt away from the target in the downswing. That's not easy for everyone to time/coordinate. Here's an example of Ryan Fox accommodating a late, and exaggerated, wrist set.

Happy Golfing,
Tyler
