Assessing A Fall Line - Putting

Using your body's feel, you can find out where the fall line around the hole is. If you are 90 degrees to the fall line, it will break the greatest distance, if you are somewhere in between, it will break some. To find the fall line, you can either use your feet, and find the place around the perimeter of the putt where you are not walking uphill or downhill. This is best done by closing your eyes. Also, you could imagine doing a push up around the whole. Wherever you would place your hands and they BOTH would be at the same height as the hole is a straight putt (the location of the fall line).

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,000
Okay, so I'm going to show you how to assess a fall line because this can help you identify

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:10,000
what's going to happen in the last four feet.

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:16,000
Essentially, as the ball slows down, it's going to drift towards the fall line.

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:19,000
So there are a couple common ways.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:25,000
One way is as you walk around the hole, you can start to identify when you've gone from

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:27,000
walking uphill to walking downhill.

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:31,000
So in this particular case, it's right about here, which is where I would stop going

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:33,000
down and start going up.

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:40,000
So this right here would be a fall line, which is roughly going to be a straight put.

00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:45,000
So if this is the straight put, then if I'm putting from above there, it's going to

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:49,000
funnel down this way, if I'm coming from below here, it's going to funnel in towards

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:50,000
the fall line.

00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:57,000
Another way that makes a lot of sense, especially if you've done a lot of outdoor sports,

00:00:57,000 --> 00:00:58,000
I call the pushup method.

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:03,000
So Jeff Magnum was the first show assuming I think it's a great little tool.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:07,000
If you've used a lot of outside on the course, or outside on the grass, playing soccer,

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:11,000
football, anything where you were used to getting your hands on the ground.

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:16,000
Essentially, I'm going to imagine that I have to do a pushup around the hole, and I'm

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:18,000
going to try to figure out where my hands would be level.

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:21,000
So I wouldn't want to do the pushup like this or like this.

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:23,000
I want them to be level.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:28,000
So right here is where I would be pushing into a straight line.

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:31,000
So again, this looks like the fall line.

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:33,000
So those are two quick and easy methods.

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:39,000
If you're more visual, you can imagine if water were flowing, where it would start to collect

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:45,000
and funnel, because if it's on more of a side slope, it's going to find the fall line

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:46,000
and funnel down that way.

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:50,000
So those are three methods you can use to identify the fall line, which will help you

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:52,000
read the last word for the feed of the put.
