Assisted Swing The Handle

For many golfers, feeling the proper sequencing of body-to-arm movements is a real eye opener. A great way to feel it is with the assisted swing the handle drill. In this drill, you can experiment with different timings and rates of arm acceleration strategies. If you do it correctly, you should develop a feel of effortless power and smooth acceleration.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
This drill is assisted swing the handle.

00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:06,000
So this is a tempo drill and kind of a sequencing drill

00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:11,000
to help you get the feeling of the timing of when your arm should get involved in the golf swing.

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:16,000
So what you're going to do is you'll hold the club upside down almost like it's a cane.

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:19,000
And I recommend using your lead hand.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:21,000
You'll see why here in a second.

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:24,000
And we're just going to swing the handle the golf club,

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:27,000
just like this, which we'll swing the club head.

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:32,000
So we're going to use this as a representative of the golf swing.

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:37,000
So right there is my transition from right about there to right about there.

00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:42,000
And then from here to there is the release or I guess from here to there is the release.

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:45,000
Impact would be right around near the bottom.

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:48,000
Oh, we're just slightly before the bottom.

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:51,000
So we're going to get it swinging just like this.

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:56,000
So I do this frequently with my students and it helps them get a sense of when I want your arms to get involved.

00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:02,000
So now what we're going to do is we'll use the free hand and we're going to increase the speed.

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:05,000
And we're going to do it at a couple of different times.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:14,000
But the main one I want you to focus on is you'll see I'm pushing just after I've established momentum kind of towards the golf ball.

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:23,000
So I don't want to push right from the top of the swing because what you'll feel if you do this and I can feel it even doing it myself is I will feel that it will accelerate.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:26,000
And then it will kind of slow down through here.

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:30,000
That's more of a cast pattern which is really good for the half wedge shots.

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:36,000
Really good for shots around the green but not very good for creating a flat spot with the full swing.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:48,000
So now let's get a few of the good ones going which is as it's starting down now I'm going to speed it up and you'll see that it actually propels this object or the propell as the club head.

00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:50,000
You know almost to my end range motion.

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:57,000
Now the part that I normally add for my students that I can't do for you is I'll add the bracing component.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:04,000
So as I push this way down to the bottom I'll push this way with the opposite clip or with the handle.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:11,000
So what I will try to do is as I push I will kind of create this little force couple.

00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:15,000
Now it feels very weird doing this on my own.

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:23,000
But it gives this sense of almost the club kind of whipping down at the bottom which is a way that golfers have described the feeling of a good tempo in the past.

00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:26,000
So that's that feeling of the club constantly accelerating.

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:31,000
That's not going to happen if you get your arms too active too soon.

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:35,000
You want to make sure to get into a good delivery position before those arms get involved.

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:40,000
So the way that looks in the golf swing is if I go up to the top of this wing.

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:49,000
If I was to push straight from the top that would look more like a cast pattern where I get my arms really active early in transition.

00:02:49,000 --> 00:03:02,000
Where that the good sequencing of letting it get started and then push it down would look something like a use my body to about here and then my arms.

00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:07,000
Take that momentum and propel it and speed the club up all the way through impact.

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:17,000
So if you're struggling with some of the sequencing of this feeling the arms delayed but they're not quite feeling powerful or difficulty leading with the lower body.

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:25,000
This is a great way especially for field golfers to experience the sensation of what that proper timing will feel like.

00:03:25,000 --> 00:03:30,000
And then you can translate that into the movements as you work on your golf swing.
