Ball above your feet driver

In this video, I demonstrate the "ball above your feet driver" drill, which helps golfers with steep swings by utilizing an uphill lie to encourage a shallower, more rotational swing path. This classic drill is beneficial for those struggling with a chopping motion, often seen in newer golfers or those with an upper body-dominant swing. The goal is to swing up the slope, keeping the club close to the same height as it approaches the ball to achieve a shallower contact with the driver. Practicing on a hill provides excellent feedback, and it's a great way to naturally improve your driver swing.

00:00:05.030 --> 00:00:07.640
This drill is ball above your Feet driver. Um,

1
00:00:07.820 --> 00:00:12.000
so this is an old classic drill for helping shallow out a swing. Um,

2
00:00:12.140 --> 00:00:16.000
so many golfers who struggle with the driver have a little bit more of kind of

3
00:00:16.120 --> 00:00:21.120
a, a chopping motion. This can happen to, um, newer golfers, uh,

4
00:00:21.300 --> 00:00:25.600
or golfers with kind of a really poor palm grip or just golfers who are really

5
00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:30.040
upper body dominant. Um, so that ends up causing a lot of problems.

6
00:00:30.100 --> 00:00:33.880
If I was down here and I kind of chop down like this, um,

7
00:00:34.280 --> 00:00:38.560
I can get away with that with some irons, but I'll tend to hit some pop-ups. Um,

8
00:00:38.620 --> 00:00:42.680
and I'll tend to hit a lot of, uh, slice shots, um,

9
00:00:42.710 --> 00:00:46.840
from the steep path angle of attack. Um, it's a really pa uh,

10
00:00:46.980 --> 00:00:48.440
bad driver pattern.

11
00:00:48.780 --> 00:00:52.560
So one of the old classic drills is swinging with the ball above your feet. Now,

12
00:00:52.600 --> 00:00:55.000
I happen to have kind of the perfect scenario for this,

13
00:00:55.090 --> 00:00:59.720
where I have a graduated hill, um, that comes down to a,

14
00:00:59.920 --> 00:01:03.360
a flat spot, but you can just work. Um, I, you know,

15
00:01:03.360 --> 00:01:07.360
I've given it to students who just do it in the backyard, just practicing, um,

16
00:01:07.680 --> 00:01:11.520
swinging, either hitting wiffle ball or just practicing swinging on the hill.

17
00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:14.440
'cause the, the benefit of the hill is when you're on a,

18
00:01:14.720 --> 00:01:16.800
a ball above your feet situation like this,

19
00:01:17.300 --> 00:01:21.600
if the ground is higher up on the outside of the golf ball.

20
00:01:21.600 --> 00:01:23.200
So if I come from the outside,

21
00:01:23.640 --> 00:01:26.800
I will be more likely to hit the ground before I hit the golf ball.

22
00:01:26.820 --> 00:01:30.520
And that is really good feedback for helping your brain figure out how to

23
00:01:30.520 --> 00:01:31.340
shallow it out.

24
00:01:31.340 --> 00:01:35.960
So normally what we'll do is we'll start with it pretty much up here where I've

25
00:01:35.960 --> 00:01:38.120
got this on a hill where this would almost be knee height.

26
00:01:38.860 --> 00:01:43.520
And then my goal is to feel a little bit more of a

27
00:01:44.080 --> 00:01:48.280
rotational swing where I have the club working a feeling,

28
00:01:48.520 --> 00:01:51.120
a phrase that I'll use a swing up the slope. Um,

29
00:01:51.180 --> 00:01:55.320
so I'm basically trying to trace the slope where the club is about the same

30
00:01:55.320 --> 00:01:59.800
height as it goes from before the ball. Uh, you know,

31
00:01:59.810 --> 00:02:01.920
let's say from even with your right foot to the ball,

32
00:02:02.310 --> 00:02:04.480
that would be a very end to out path,

33
00:02:04.580 --> 00:02:06.680
and that would hit it on a slightly ascending blow.

34
00:02:06.980 --> 00:02:11.360
So if I can do that and keep the club face pretty square, I'm gonna get a nice,

35
00:02:11.740 --> 00:02:16.480
um, shallow driver contact. Now if you do have this situation at your range,

36
00:02:16.800 --> 00:02:20.800
I think it's really good and beneficial to actually hit golf balls. Um,

37
00:02:21.020 --> 00:02:25.480
so what we would do is we would start by putting a golf ball where I'm at,

38
00:02:25.480 --> 00:02:27.640
kind of the, the peak or the higher point of the slope.

39
00:02:27.900 --> 00:02:31.160
And then I would go down to where it was a just a slightly slope,

40
00:02:31.500 --> 00:02:35.280
and then I would go down to where it was flat trying to recreate that feel and

41
00:02:35.280 --> 00:02:39.320
kind of going back and forth between the severe ball above my feet where I feel

42
00:02:39.320 --> 00:02:44.200
like I'm swinging a little bit more up the slope or around on the way

43
00:02:44.200 --> 00:02:48.640
through. Um, to then when I'm here on the ground, that's gonna feel,

44
00:02:49.260 --> 00:02:51.600
uh, in order to swing it up the slope,

45
00:02:51.600 --> 00:02:54.760
that's just gonna feel like it's a little bit more into out path.

46
00:02:54.980 --> 00:02:59.880
So if you're really struggling with getting steep by pulling down in the club is

47
00:02:59.880 --> 00:03:04.680
in a very vertical position, swinging a driver with the ball above your feet or,

48
00:03:04.820 --> 00:03:05.140
uh,

49
00:03:05.140 --> 00:03:09.600
on this up slope is a great way to shallow out your swing kind of naturally or

50
00:03:09.630 --> 00:03:11.840
intuitively. Okay. So as a quick demo,

51
00:03:11.950 --> 00:03:15.360
I've got three balls here set up kind of gradually working up the slope.

52
00:03:15.700 --> 00:03:17.880
Not a lot of driving range have this. So, um,

53
00:03:17.880 --> 00:03:21.600
even if you just practice doing the demo or doing the swing in your backyard,

54
00:03:21.980 --> 00:03:26.440
uh, that tends to help. Um, but basically this one here, I've got it at about,

55
00:03:26.820 --> 00:03:30.760
uh, you know, close to just the bottom of my knee. Um,

56
00:03:30.950 --> 00:03:34.360
this one will be more close to the top of my shoe,

57
00:03:34.380 --> 00:03:36.400
so it's probably a good three, four inches above.

58
00:03:36.660 --> 00:03:40.320
And then this would be more of a flat lie. Uh, so the,

59
00:03:40.380 --> 00:03:44.360
the goal here is to swing up the hill, get the ball to launch a little bit,

60
00:03:44.360 --> 00:03:47.080
right, and, uh, feel like the,

61
00:03:47.540 --> 00:03:50.680
or make sure that the club face is close enough that it doesn't slice.

62
00:03:50.760 --> 00:03:55.720
I don't mind the little push, um, but I don't wanna see a big slice.

63
00:03:55.720 --> 00:03:59.960
Usually if you come outside in, you're gonna hit a really low pole, um,

64
00:04:00.060 --> 00:04:04.320
in order to not ground it out. Um, but I want to, if, uh,

65
00:04:04.420 --> 00:04:07.880
if you're brushing and you're looking at the, the path of the club,

66
00:04:08.280 --> 00:04:13.160
I wanna see the path of the club brushing the grass kind of up the

67
00:04:13.200 --> 00:04:17.280
hill. That's a phrase that I use a lot when I give, um, kids or newer golfers.

68
00:04:17.280 --> 00:04:20.400
This task is, uh, swinging up the hill.

69
00:04:20.900 --> 00:04:22.960
So first one here might feel,

70
00:04:23.300 --> 00:04:26.920
you'll naturally see some golfers start to close their shoulders and,

71
00:04:27.060 --> 00:04:28.560
and tilt a little bit more because,

72
00:04:28.880 --> 00:04:33.760
'cause it now starts to make sense if I'm going to swing up the hill

73
00:04:33.760 --> 00:04:36.840
just like that. So that was a little bit more of a push, but, um,

74
00:04:37.160 --> 00:04:39.920
I would count that that was a pretty good, pretty good, uh,

75
00:04:40.220 --> 00:04:44.280
up the hill swing path. So then this one is just slightly there,

76
00:04:44.280 --> 00:04:48.520
but it still makes me feel like I want to swing a little bit more around,

77
00:04:51.050 --> 00:04:54.000
Kinda like that. So that was a pretty good, um,

78
00:04:54.030 --> 00:04:58.400
ball flight for what I'm trying to demonstrate here. And now, uh, lastly,

79
00:04:58.420 --> 00:05:02.400
I'm gonna try to recreate the same feel. Ideally, I'd,

80
00:05:02.460 --> 00:05:03.920
I'd have an alignment stick down, but I,

81
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.680
I forgot to bring one over here to this part of the driving range. Um,

82
00:05:06.740 --> 00:05:11.280
but I'd have an alignment stick down to help kind of visualize what I just felt

83
00:05:11.280 --> 00:05:16.280
there of swinging more into out or more up the, up the hill or up the stick. Um,

84
00:05:16.540 --> 00:05:21.360
so basically trying to exaggerate or recreate that feeling of

85
00:05:21.360 --> 00:05:23.280
going up the hill,

86
00:05:25.490 --> 00:05:29.760
kinda like that little, little toy, little pull. Um,

87
00:05:29.820 --> 00:05:33.600
or not really pull a little overdraw, but, uh, overall you get the picture.

88
00:05:33.660 --> 00:05:34.260
If you're,

89
00:05:34.260 --> 00:05:38.360
if you're getting a little bit choppy and a little steep with your driver, um,

90
00:05:39.010 --> 00:05:39.843
swing on a hill,

91
00:05:39.950 --> 00:05:43.320
that'll be a natural way to figure for you to figure out what a little bit more

92
00:05:43.320 --> 00:05:46.240
shallowness or around is gonna feel like with your driver.
