Building Arm Connection With A Sponge

There are lots of products available to help you with feeling the space between your arms. The best tool that I know of for training proper arm connection is a car wash sponge. It's soft enough and light enough that it doesn't impede the follow through position. Use a sponge to help on poor shoulder bracing or a body stall during the release.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This video is building forum connection with a car wash sponge.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:10,000
So many golfers struggle with the release and a lot of them will come in saying that they've

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:13,000
got a scoop where they think that they're rister bending like this and I'll show them

00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:19,000
on video that the rister actually staying pretty stable on the way through but what's

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:23,000
actually happening is that more of the elbows and the shoulders are bending.

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:29,000
So they'll get to a open club-faced position kind of like this maybe even a little outside

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:35,000
in and then those elbows will bend on the way through to help close the face by letting the club

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:42,000
pass and to prevent from hitting it fat. So oftentimes what will happen is will work on

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:47,000
some body pivot stuff and will work on getting more shafter rotation because those are the two key

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:52,000
things that you'll have to do to solve that pattern but one way to tie it together into a

00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:56,000
feel and give you a kind of a simple drill that you can use is to take a car wash sponge and place

00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:03,000
between your forums. So I've got two different versions here. One was just a rectangular sponge

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:09,000
that I cut in half and then put a rubber band around so it would create kind of more of an x-shaped

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:15,000
that I could fit between my forums kind of like that or the other one that I like even more is

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:20,000
they've got that kind of figure eight sponge and I just cut it in half but if you have a little bit

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:26,000
more broad shoulders you may have to do the whole sponge instead of cutting it in half.

00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:34,000
I'm not a big fan of the impact ball because the foam itself is way too dense and so what it does

00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:40,000
is it prevents you from squeezing those arms on the way through or letting the natural

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:46,000
supination of roll happen. It'll force you because it's firm it'll force it to rotate around the

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:52,000
ball instead of rotating through the ball like we would do in the regular swing. So what I usually

00:01:52,000 --> 00:02:01,000
recommend is doing these shots mostly working on release pattern kind of nine to three and what most

00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:07,000
people find is that they feel that in order to swing with that between their forums they have to have

00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:16,000
more fluid body rotation. It will the sponge usually would come out if you were to make a full swing

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:22,000
either at the top of the swing it'll drop out depending on your shoulder flexibility but for most

00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:29,000
people it would drop out if you take a full full backswing or on the way through once you get past

00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:35,000
about a shaft vertical as the arm works around you would have the sponge drop out there.

00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:43,000
So I mostly work use this working on release style drills. Okay so in demonstrating you place the

00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:50,000
between your forums. It'll more or less keep your forums pretty quiet and then just doing

00:02:52,000 --> 00:03:00,000
some little nine to three swings. This will force you to keep that connection between your arms

00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:04,000
and you'll find that they go right unless you have a little bit more of the motorcycle.

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:13,000
So again, that was a pretty good one there and you'll see that I controlled

00:03:13,000 --> 00:03:18,000
most of that hit with the body. Then the goal would be to duplicate it, add length to the movement,

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:23,000
add speed to the movement but this is a great little training aid that you can keep in your bag.

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:29,000
You can work it into full swings if your shoulders have pretty good flexibility.

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:37,000
I've also got one version where I've got it a land your kind of whole plant or drilled through the

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:41,000
middle so that I don't have to keep letting go and picking it up in case I lose it.

00:03:43,000 --> 00:03:51,000
Similar to the training aid that Martin Kimer or sorry, Henry Extensen was using.

00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:54,000
But you can take pretty close to full swings with the sponge.

00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:02,000
It will limit a bit what happens in the follow through because you won't be able to

00:04:02,000 --> 00:04:09,000
let that arm go at the top. So try this if you find that you have either a stall of your body on the

00:04:09,000 --> 00:04:16,000
way through or your arms bend on the way through. Both are signs that your arms and your body aren't

00:04:16,000 --> 00:04:20,000
quite connected and using a car wash sponge helps connect them.
