Case Study - Indirect Arm Shallow

Once you isolate what you need to work on, the fun part of training begins. You have to experiment with different ways of training it until you find one that works so that you can put in reps and train your brain. In this video, I show you how using follow through training can have a profound effect on club path during the release. This is useful when a golfer can't really feel what's going on in a specific area.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
In this case study, we're going to take a look at a golfer working through shallow arms.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So I like the recipe or the process of clarifying exactly what you want to do,

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:13,000
and then selecting a drill that gets you to do what you want to do,

00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:15,000
and then putting in reps.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:22,000
And when you put in reps, the next step is to remove the barriers that prevent you from hitting the ball the way you want,

00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:24,000
when you do what you're trying to do.

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:28,000
So in this particular example, working on shallow arms,

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:31,000
working on it directly didn't really resonate.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:34,000
So we clarified that we needed to shallow out the swing,

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:39,000
but going at it directly didn't work, so we went at it from a different perspective,

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:41,000
which you'll see in this video.

00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:44,000
Once we had a way that he could train the shallow arms,

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:47,000
then he was able to put in reps, and we started to remove barriers.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:51,000
So this will hopefully help you see the recipe of how you can improve your own game.

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:54,000
Alright, this is the student he had joined the website,

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:59,000
and then found me live close enough nearby where he wanted to come in and take a few lessons.

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:01,000
He knew that he needed to shallow out the swing,

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:03,000
and we had a limited time frame.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:05,000
So we only had about six or eight weeks.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:08,000
We were able to fit in about four lessons.

00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:12,000
So over here on the left, we have the first swings that he took for me.

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:17,000
And he had been working on trying to get some of that right arm external rotation.

00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:21,000
He was working on some of the active ways to shallow out the club.

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:24,000
Now you can see that there's a lot of body rotation,

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:27,000
and you can see that those arms aren't really...

00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:32,000
They're shallowing a bit, but you can see that that overall path is probably going to get outside in,

00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:35,000
unless that club drops a ton.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:37,000
And now if you see where he's looking,

00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:40,000
I haven't aimed at the middle of the driving range,

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:42,000
which is there's a...

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:44,000
there's a pole kind of in line with one of those trees.

00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:47,000
So that's roughly where he's trying to hit.

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:50,000
So even though he was doing some of the shallow pumps,

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:55,000
the problem was it wasn't providing correct feedback for him.

00:01:55,000 --> 00:02:02,000
And so here we can see his actual swing is very steep, almost vertical,

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:04,000
with a very leftward path.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:06,000
He was hitting really deep divots.

00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:09,000
He was hitting big poles, some slices,

00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:16,000
and he couldn't hit anything longer than, you know, say, a five-iron with any level of consistency.

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:19,000
So I wanted to show that one because it had the little pump in it.

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:23,000
But here you can see the movement outside,

00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:26,000
so we can see it get steep,

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:30,000
and you'll see a lot of toe shots and a lot of poles.

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:32,000
This is actually the...

00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:33,000
near the beginning of the second lesson.

00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:35,000
So by working on it directly,

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:38,000
we were not able to make a big impact

00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:40,000
as far as the shallowing goes.

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:44,000
Now I wanted to use this as a case study for a couple reasons.

00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:48,000
One, I sometimes get accused of teaching a swing

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:51,000
that only young guys are able to do.

00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:56,000
And so I wanted to show a guy who's a little bit larger,

00:02:56,000 --> 00:03:02,000
maybe doesn't work out on, he's got a pretty busy job working in the oil and gas.

00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:05,000
But he's a passionate golfer in any practice as a bunch.

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:08,000
The other key that I wanted to highlight

00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:14,000
was that you don't necessarily have to actively do what you're trying to do.

00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:18,000
So the three steps are basically clarify what you're trying to do.

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:23,000
Select a drill that allows you to do it correctly

00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:25,000
and then put in reps.

00:03:25,000 --> 00:03:28,000
And once you've put in reps, you then want to remove barriers

00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:31,000
as to why when you put whatever you're learning in that drill

00:03:31,000 --> 00:03:33,000
when you put that back in your full swing,

00:03:33,000 --> 00:03:36,000
it doesn't give you exactly the results you want,

00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:37,000
what else is left.

00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:41,000
So clarify, select a drill and then remove barriers.

00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:44,000
So here we still know we've got to get shallow

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:47,000
and working on it directly wasn't getting there.

00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:50,000
Every time I asked him what did it feel like,

00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:53,000
what did it feel like, he wasn't very aware of feel.

00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:57,000
So we did some variation of the force square

00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:00,000
and a variation of the follow through poles.

00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:04,000
So getting awareness of where we wanted to club this swing

00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:08,000
and we used some sticks and alignment aids

00:04:08,000 --> 00:04:12,000
and kind of created some visuals so that he could see

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:14,000
where he wanted to get the club to go.

00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:17,000
Now what's fast forward to the end of this lesson

00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:19,000
and show you what the changes were.

00:04:19,000 --> 00:04:22,000
Alright, over on the left he's trying to swing along

00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:24,000
this path that we created.

00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:28,000
He's trying to create a blur that goes

00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:31,000
kind of through this gate or along this path.

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:33,000
And you can see he's basically trying to get his arms

00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:35,000
this swing where what he felt was

00:04:36,000 --> 00:04:38,000
directly out to the right.

00:04:38,000 --> 00:04:41,000
We had visuals trying to help him out.

00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:44,000
But you can see a massive change in where he was able

00:04:44,000 --> 00:04:46,000
to get the club to shallow.

00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:50,000
So this is one example of how we wanted to work on shallow arms

00:04:50,000 --> 00:04:52,000
and we found a way to work on shallow arms

00:04:52,000 --> 00:04:55,000
by working on the follow through position.

00:04:55,000 --> 00:05:00,000
Here he is after doing kind of a full session of practice.

00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:03,000
If you remember he wasn't able to hit anything

00:05:03,000 --> 00:05:07,000
and about a five iron and here he was able to hit

00:05:07,000 --> 00:05:11,000
a number of drives that would have gone pretty straight

00:05:11,000 --> 00:05:13,000
and found the fairway.

00:05:13,000 --> 00:05:17,000
So at this point we were both pretty excited

00:05:17,000 --> 00:05:21,000
but I know from looking from teaching golf

00:05:21,000 --> 00:05:23,000
and kind of working in motor learnings

00:05:23,000 --> 00:05:27,000
that you don't know what's learned until there's been time.

00:05:27,000 --> 00:05:30,000
You don't know if he's actually learned how to shallow

00:05:30,000 --> 00:05:32,000
the arms or he just was in a good groove.

00:05:32,000 --> 00:05:35,000
So I was really excited to see where I had it.

00:05:35,000 --> 00:05:38,000
I was anxious to see what would happen when he came back

00:05:38,000 --> 00:05:40,000
for the next lesson.

00:05:40,000 --> 00:05:43,000
Alright, as we were walking out he told me he hit a lot of

00:05:43,000 --> 00:05:45,000
good shots. He saw that some bad ones but he hit a lot of

00:05:45,000 --> 00:05:48,000
good shots and the overall turf contact was better.

00:05:48,000 --> 00:05:51,000
That was the main feedback we were focusing on.

00:05:51,000 --> 00:05:53,000
Because once we got the blur we had to do,

00:05:53,000 --> 00:05:57,000
you know, brush the ground and then put the ball in the way.

00:05:57,000 --> 00:05:59,000
But he worked through that. He got some awareness

00:05:59,000 --> 00:06:03,000
of the proper path. This was his first swing

00:06:03,000 --> 00:06:05,000
after that next lesson.

00:06:05,000 --> 00:06:09,000
So in my head I'm like, oh man, it didn't quite stick.

00:06:09,000 --> 00:06:13,000
It's a little shallow, it's not quite as vertical

00:06:13,000 --> 00:06:15,000
but nowhere near where it was.

00:06:15,000 --> 00:06:19,000
As soon as he hit that ball he said, nope, nope, I got this.

00:06:19,000 --> 00:06:21,000
Here was the next swing.

00:06:21,000 --> 00:06:24,000
And I asked him what the difference was

00:06:24,000 --> 00:06:28,000
and he said he could see the blur of the club

00:06:28,000 --> 00:06:30,000
going through the path.

00:06:30,000 --> 00:06:35,000
And the neat thing was he said after training the blur of the club

00:06:35,000 --> 00:06:38,000
and using visual feedback after doing that for a few weeks,

00:06:38,000 --> 00:06:42,000
he was now starting to feel where his arms were

00:06:42,000 --> 00:06:44,000
in the library position.

00:06:44,000 --> 00:06:48,000
So he was starting to feel where his body was and how it

00:06:48,000 --> 00:06:49,000
related to this visual.

00:06:49,000 --> 00:06:52,000
So he's using multiple feedback mechanisms to help

00:06:52,000 --> 00:06:54,000
create the shallow path.

00:06:54,000 --> 00:06:56,000
But the key is you have to,

00:06:56,000 --> 00:06:59,000
once you figure out what you need to do,

00:06:59,000 --> 00:07:01,000
whether it's move the low point,

00:07:01,000 --> 00:07:04,000
power it more with the body, get more leg,

00:07:04,000 --> 00:07:07,000
shallow out the club, square the club face earlier.

00:07:07,000 --> 00:07:09,000
Whatever you decide you need to do,

00:07:09,000 --> 00:07:12,000
you have to find a drill or two that help you do it.

00:07:12,000 --> 00:07:14,000
I find that most people just,

00:07:14,000 --> 00:07:16,000
they figure out what they want to do

00:07:16,000 --> 00:07:18,000
and then they go put in reps trying to do it.

00:07:18,000 --> 00:07:20,000
But they haven't actually

00:07:20,000 --> 00:07:24,000
changed the situation so that they're actually doing it.

00:07:24,000 --> 00:07:27,000
So they're really just confusing their motor pattern

00:07:27,000 --> 00:07:30,000
by thinking they're doing one thing

00:07:30,000 --> 00:07:32,000
and not actually doing it.

00:07:32,000 --> 00:07:35,000
So you've got to find a drill and select a drill

00:07:35,000 --> 00:07:38,000
that gets you to actually do what you're trying to train.

00:07:38,000 --> 00:07:40,000
Then you can put in the reps

00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:44,000
and if it's not everything's not going exactly the way you want,

00:07:44,000 --> 00:07:45,000
you can then remove barriers.

00:07:45,000 --> 00:07:48,000
Like we found such as over here

00:07:48,000 --> 00:07:51,000
that when he tries to swing harder,

00:07:51,000 --> 00:07:52,000
he gets a little steeper.

00:07:52,000 --> 00:07:53,000
So that's a barrier.

00:07:53,000 --> 00:07:56,000
We have to work on how can he get the blur

00:07:56,000 --> 00:07:58,000
while still swinging hard.

00:07:58,000 --> 00:08:00,000
We also found that he,

00:08:00,000 --> 00:08:04,000
one of the barriers on some of his workshops

00:08:04,000 --> 00:08:06,000
he would tend to have the club face

00:08:06,000 --> 00:08:09,000
a little bit more open compared to the path.

00:08:09,000 --> 00:08:12,000
So we had to work a little bit more on getting the club face to rotate.

00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:14,000
Hopefully this inspires you

00:08:14,000 --> 00:08:17,000
to experiment with different forms of feedback

00:08:17,000 --> 00:08:19,000
that can ultimately help you

00:08:20,000 --> 00:08:22,000
do the movements that you're trying to do

00:08:22,000 --> 00:08:24,000
so that you can build your field database

00:08:24,000 --> 00:08:26,000
so that it'll hold up under pressure

00:08:26,000 --> 00:08:28,000
when you're out on the course.
