Clubface Closing Strategies

There are (3) different ways to open/close the clubface during the release. Specificially, golfers will use a combination of shaft rotation ("motorcycle"), a raising/lowing of the handle, and a linear movement of the handle forwards/backwards ("shaft lean"). Depending upon how efficiently they combine these moves and to what degree they employ them, you can get an overall view of a player's closing strategy and the inefficiencies/efficiencies in their game. Ultimately, it is important to know your own "default" pattern and how these (3) movements contribute to it, before making a plan for improvement. This will help you pick the right drills and concepts to work on and hopefully, speed up your progress.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This concept video is talking through clubface closing strategies.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So we're going to talk through a couple different clubface closing patterns so that you

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:14,000
can understand how the three main ways to close the face are related to each other.

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:19,000
So I think it's sometimes easiest to visualize the face when you're holding it up.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:21,000
So I'll tend to do this with students.

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:26,000
I'll have it kind of held up it parallel like so or you know belly button height more

00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:28,000
like baseball level.

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:34,000
So if I was to this is pointing perpendicular to the ground kind of like this, if I have

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:41,000
more opening elements so if I bring it back and rotate it'll point more up, if I have

00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:45,000
more closing elements it will come more down.

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:50,000
So whatever I do in the backswing I just have to make sure that I balance that out and

00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:52,000
get the face pointed at the target.

00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:59,000
The main ones will be twisting, bringing the club back, you can see forward points it more

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:05,000
up, back points it more down and then if I lowered that's pointing a little bit more

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:08,000
down if I go this way that's pointing a little bit more up.

00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:12,000
So ideally I'm going to have that unhing which points it more up.

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:16,000
I'm going to have shaft lean which points it more up and then I will have the motorcycle

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:23,000
which points it more down that creates kind of the best impact conditions especially with

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:24,000
these longer clubs.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:31,000
So now we'll take a look at it in more of the golf plane but you can visualize it and practice

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:35,000
it up here and just kind of see the individual pieces.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:40,000
If I wanted to come back square I could just keep it square to that path that whole time

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:46,000
or I could rotate it open and just time it coming back.

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:52,000
That's kind of a golfer's choice but ultimately I can relate where the ball is starting

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:55,000
and how the ball is curving to that club face orientation.

00:01:55,000 --> 00:02:00,000
So the three ways to close the face or open the face.

00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:06,000
If I lower the handle that closes the face because now you can see the face is pointing

00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:07,000
way over there.

00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:11,000
So I had that lie angle tool this would point straight and then as it goes down that

00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:16,000
face is now angled that way as it goes up it's angled more that way.

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:23,000
Then I could keep the grip in the same place and rotate the face open or close.

00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:27,000
This is one of the common ones that most people think of when they think of closing in

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:28,000
the face or opening the face.

00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:33,000
And then the other one is I could keep the club head end in the same place and I could

00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:41,000
bring the handle back on the path or forward along the path when it goes more ahead.

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:45,000
I'm essentially hitting it earlier in the arc and the club face has less time to close.

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:50,000
So it's more open and when I bring the handle back I'm hitting it later in the arc and

00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:54,000
so the club face has a greater chance to close.

00:02:54,000 --> 00:02:56,000
Basically coming in through there.

00:02:56,000 --> 00:03:06,000
So what many golfers do is they figure out a combination of these three closing mechanisms.

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:11,000
One common one is they're not going to use the motorcycle so the face will be really

00:03:11,000 --> 00:03:17,000
open and then they'll have more of the scoop and lower the handle.

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:24,000
So they will tend to have more of a look like this and they'll hit a fair amount of

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:30,000
they'll have low point control issues because of the more of the flip aspect and they'll

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:36,000
tend to get more pull start lines especially with the longer clubs kind of like that.

00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:42,000
But they can hit kind of a very playable fade pattern typically with the short irons.

00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:47,000
And you'll see when I do that one if you were to look at your own swing you may see

00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:52,000
the club exit way around to the left kind of like that.

00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:58,000
That's a good sign that you're using more of that flip style or what some guys call

00:03:58,000 --> 00:04:05,000
more of a swivel style release because basically what they're doing is we're using

00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:12,000
lack of unhing that closes it and letting the club pass that closes it.

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:18,000
So now I can hold off on the motorcycle I can basically rotate this way and still get

00:04:18,000 --> 00:04:22,000
the club face pointing in the direction of the target but you've seen order to do that.

00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:25,000
I hit it fact because my low point is off.

00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:31,000
So the pattern going this way has to get used to more unhing that opens the face like

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:32,000
this.

00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:33,000
So then I have to have that motorcycle movement.

00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:40,000
Ideally that motorcycle movement is going to happen much earlier and then I can unhing

00:04:40,000 --> 00:04:43,000
and then simply rotate my body on the way through.

00:04:43,000 --> 00:04:47,000
So it has a feeling of the arms being a little bit more early and a feeling of quieter

00:04:47,000 --> 00:04:52,000
hands because it's more of a body hit but it's really just using the hands differently.

00:04:52,000 --> 00:04:58,000
So now a second pattern would be more I'm going to really raise the handle and bring

00:04:58,000 --> 00:05:04,000
the club through kind of like this which holds the face open.

00:05:04,000 --> 00:05:07,000
So then down at the bottom I can spin it really fast.

00:05:07,000 --> 00:05:12,000
So I get a lot of the closing from the rotation very late so this would be more of a late

00:05:12,000 --> 00:05:18,000
style motorcycle and then I hold the face off with that one.

00:05:18,000 --> 00:05:23,000
Now this golfer will tend to hit blocks and when they hit it straight it's more because

00:05:23,000 --> 00:05:29,000
they perfectly timed letting that last piece go of closing the face with a little bit

00:05:29,000 --> 00:05:31,000
more scoop kind of like that.

00:05:31,000 --> 00:05:36,000
They'll tend to be more picker styles of the golf ball have kind of a sweeping draw or

00:05:36,000 --> 00:05:42,000
a pull draw miss with the driver where oftentimes they get going this way too much which

00:05:42,000 --> 00:05:48,000
forces them to then straighten the arm too much on the way through.

00:05:48,000 --> 00:05:49,000
Kind of like that.

00:05:49,000 --> 00:05:54,000
So that golfer has to get the motorcycle to happen earlier and then a little bit more

00:05:54,000 --> 00:05:56,000
shaft lean to compliment.

00:05:56,000 --> 00:06:01,000
So the motorcycle tends to close it and then that shaft lean tends to hold it open and

00:06:01,000 --> 00:06:05,000
that unhinged tends to shallow things out.

00:06:05,000 --> 00:06:10,000
So if it's a little bit off it'll go a little bit right or left but that tends to be a

00:06:10,000 --> 00:06:13,000
little bit more consistent pattern.

00:06:13,000 --> 00:06:16,000
One other pattern is the severely outside in.

00:06:16,000 --> 00:06:23,000
So this golfer typically gets the face pointed at the target more by using the outside

00:06:23,000 --> 00:06:24,000
in path.

00:06:24,000 --> 00:06:26,000
So the face never actually gets closed.

00:06:26,000 --> 00:06:31,000
It's basically coming through space like this, coming through in an open position like

00:06:31,000 --> 00:06:32,000
that.

00:06:32,000 --> 00:06:39,000
Instead of rotating closed what they do is they swing more down so now that open position

00:06:39,000 --> 00:06:41,000
is pointing at the target.

00:06:41,000 --> 00:06:46,000
The net result of that is the club face was left open.

00:06:46,000 --> 00:06:50,000
They're getting a little bit of squaring from the flip but the hands aren't down enough

00:06:50,000 --> 00:06:54,000
to get it left and they definitely haven't had enough rotation.

00:06:54,000 --> 00:07:00,000
So the face is open and then they're just getting the ball to start at the target because

00:07:00,000 --> 00:07:06,000
of the face relationship to the target but it's going to curve off to the right because

00:07:06,000 --> 00:07:08,000
the face the path is so open.

00:07:08,000 --> 00:07:11,000
So that golfer absolutely needs to add a little bit of motorcycle to start getting the

00:07:11,000 --> 00:07:17,000
face more closed to the path earlier so then they can bring or improve the path which

00:07:17,000 --> 00:07:23,000
will help them get a little bit more shaffling and with a shallower bottom of this wing

00:07:23,000 --> 00:07:25,000
tends to work a little bit better for the longer clubs.
