You are not a machine. Some movements are easier for your body to combine than others based on where muscles attach and how they move. This is very evident in the movement of the forearms which combine extension with ulnar deviation and flexion with radial deviation.

00:00:00.110 --> 00:00:03.000
in this golf smart insight we're gonna
00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:04.529
take a look at the movements of the
00:00:04.529 --> 00:00:07.649
forearms so there are a number of
00:00:07.649 --> 00:00:09.330
different movements that are possible
00:00:09.330 --> 00:00:11.730
with the forearms right first one we've
00:00:11.730 --> 00:00:15.150
got is flexion and extension those are
00:00:15.150 --> 00:00:17.640
opposites and then we've got ulnar
00:00:17.640 --> 00:00:20.039
deviation and radial deviation so this
00:00:20.039 --> 00:00:22.800
is ulnar this is radial or this is a
00:00:22.800 --> 00:00:25.289
deduction this is a deduction then we've
00:00:25.289 --> 00:00:28.109
got pronation sorry supination and
00:00:28.109 --> 00:00:31.439
pronation so supination is when the palm
00:00:31.439 --> 00:00:33.360
faces up pronation is when the palm pace
00:00:33.360 --> 00:00:36.329
is down those are the basic movements of
00:00:36.329 --> 00:00:39.960
the forearm and wrist well just like 3d
00:00:39.960 --> 00:00:41.129
has helped us to understand the
00:00:41.129 --> 00:00:42.570
movements of the spine
00:00:42.570 --> 00:00:44.399
I think 3d can help you understand the
00:00:44.399 --> 00:00:46.079
movements of the forearms and that's
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:47.010
what we're gonna talk about in this
00:00:47.010 --> 00:00:50.280
video now it's important to understand
00:00:50.280 --> 00:00:53.160
that your body is not just a series of
00:00:53.160 --> 00:00:56.340
levers your bodies is our joints and
00:00:56.340 --> 00:00:58.410
muscles and things that create these
00:00:58.410 --> 00:01:02.579
appearances of letters so the the
00:01:02.579 --> 00:01:03.960
understanding of how the spine and the
00:01:03.960 --> 00:01:05.610
hips and the body moves in the backswing
00:01:05.610 --> 00:01:07.290
has changed a lot right they used to
00:01:07.290 --> 00:01:09.060
teach that you're gonna get in this
00:01:09.060 --> 00:01:10.229
posture and you're just gonna rotate
00:01:10.229 --> 00:01:12.689
around your spine well now we explain
00:01:12.689 --> 00:01:14.729
that okay some people need to feel like
00:01:14.729 --> 00:01:16.799
they give more of a side bending
00:01:16.799 --> 00:01:18.930
movement because to make a good pivot
00:01:18.930 --> 00:01:20.340
and a back swing is actually gonna be a
00:01:20.340 --> 00:01:22.890
blend of some rotations some side Bend
00:01:22.890 --> 00:01:25.619
and a little bit of extension well I
00:01:25.619 --> 00:01:27.960
think the same thing can be applied to
00:01:27.960 --> 00:01:30.030
the form so let's take a look at the
00:01:30.030 --> 00:01:31.500
movements of the forearms and where the
00:01:31.500 --> 00:01:32.939
muscles are that help those movements
00:01:32.939 --> 00:01:35.970
take place so first let's look at two of
00:01:35.970 --> 00:01:37.650
the big ones which is flexion and
00:01:37.650 --> 00:01:39.750
extension now what I want you to do is
00:01:39.750 --> 00:01:42.119
take your hand and place it on your
00:01:42.119 --> 00:01:44.250
elbow just like so so you got one on
00:01:44.250 --> 00:01:46.380
kind of the soft fleshy part and one on
00:01:46.380 --> 00:01:48.240
the back side like so so now if you were
00:01:48.240 --> 00:01:50.759
to flex you will feel most of the
00:01:50.759 --> 00:01:53.670
activity happening right down here on
00:01:53.670 --> 00:01:55.560
the inside your form if you were to then
00:01:55.560 --> 00:01:57.750
extend you would feel that this sides
00:01:57.750 --> 00:01:59.909
relaxed and all the motion is happening
00:01:59.909 --> 00:02:02.070
on this side of your reform or the
00:02:02.070 --> 00:02:05.520
outside of your form now it's important
00:02:05.520 --> 00:02:07.979
to understand that if I was to lay my
00:02:07.979 --> 00:02:10.950
forearm like so and draw a line down the
00:02:10.950 --> 00:02:11.790
middle
00:02:11.790 --> 00:02:13.140
most of the
00:02:13.140 --> 00:02:15.540
lectures they're all connecting on the
00:02:15.540 --> 00:02:17.970
inside of my elbow and they're kind of
00:02:17.970 --> 00:02:21.180
coming across just like so right now if
00:02:21.180 --> 00:02:22.800
I had this facing the other way and I
00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:25.110
was to extend they all connect on the
00:02:25.110 --> 00:02:27.870
outside part of my elbow and they'll be
00:02:27.870 --> 00:02:30.060
coming more from the thumb side kind of
00:02:30.060 --> 00:02:32.880
across like this so what ends up
00:02:32.880 --> 00:02:35.610
happening is when you flex your wrist
00:02:35.610 --> 00:02:38.850
like so the some of the same muscles and
00:02:38.850 --> 00:02:41.459
the muscles on the right side are also
00:02:41.459 --> 00:02:43.560
going to be responsible for some ulnar
00:02:43.560 --> 00:02:47.760
deviation the opposite is true that when
00:02:47.760 --> 00:02:49.980
I go to extend my wrist I'm going to use
00:02:49.980 --> 00:02:51.810
these muscles here and because of most
00:02:51.810 --> 00:02:53.850
of them connect up by the thumb side
00:02:53.850 --> 00:02:57.030
they're going to encourage some radial
00:02:57.030 --> 00:02:58.980
deviation so it's important to
00:02:58.980 --> 00:03:00.480
understand that these two movements are
00:03:00.480 --> 00:03:01.560
a little bit coupled you've got
00:03:01.560 --> 00:03:03.630
extension and radial deviation you get
00:03:03.630 --> 00:03:07.170
flexion and ulnar deviation so how does
00:03:07.170 --> 00:03:09.060
this work or how can you experiment with
00:03:09.060 --> 00:03:12.630
that if you were to radial deviate or
00:03:12.630 --> 00:03:13.890
bring your thumb up like you're hinging
00:03:13.890 --> 00:03:16.050
a hammer and then you were to extend
00:03:16.050 --> 00:03:17.370
you'd feel that that feels pretty
00:03:17.370 --> 00:03:18.989
comfortable and you can see that the
00:03:18.989 --> 00:03:21.510
space between my hands didn't really
00:03:21.510 --> 00:03:24.510
change so now I want you to radial
00:03:24.510 --> 00:03:26.820
deviate or bring that thumb up and then
00:03:26.820 --> 00:03:28.860
I want you to try and flex and you'll
00:03:28.860 --> 00:03:30.690
feel that you get to a point where it's
00:03:30.690 --> 00:03:32.010
just not going to want to stay there and
00:03:32.010 --> 00:03:34.769
it's going to drift towards neutral okay
00:03:34.769 --> 00:03:36.600
the same thing can happen if you were to
00:03:36.600 --> 00:03:38.910
ulnar deviate so now we've got kind of
00:03:38.910 --> 00:03:40.260
the difference right here so we've only
00:03:40.260 --> 00:03:43.769
deviated and now if you flex at stays
00:03:43.769 --> 00:03:45.510
pretty much the same feels pretty
00:03:45.510 --> 00:03:47.100
comfortable if you stay there and you
00:03:47.100 --> 00:03:49.769
try to extend holy cow that starts to
00:03:49.769 --> 00:03:51.299
get hard and it makes it want to come
00:03:51.299 --> 00:03:53.610
back up it's very hard to get any amount
00:03:53.610 --> 00:03:56.190
of real extension while staying in that
00:03:56.190 --> 00:03:59.820
ulnar deviated position so I think you
00:03:59.820 --> 00:04:01.019
can see where this is starting to go
00:04:01.019 --> 00:04:03.299
when we apply it to the golf swing when
00:04:03.299 --> 00:04:06.570
you try to maintain extension of the
00:04:06.570 --> 00:04:08.190
trail wrist it's important to understand
00:04:08.190 --> 00:04:10.400
that that will also tend to maintain
00:04:10.400 --> 00:04:14.100
radial deviation if you are being told
00:04:14.100 --> 00:04:15.930
that we want to try to keep the
00:04:15.930 --> 00:04:17.609
extension of the wrist but you're gonna
00:04:17.609 --> 00:04:22.019
owner deviate or unhinge this way that's
00:04:22.019 --> 00:04:24.240
really hard for the body to do it looks
00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:25.780
cool you know I can
00:04:25.780 --> 00:04:27.130
understand how if you were just looking
00:04:27.130 --> 00:04:29.680
at the levers how that would position
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:30.880
the club a little bit more from the
00:04:30.880 --> 00:04:33.400
inside and that can make sense but it
00:04:33.400 --> 00:04:35.680
doesn't hold water when you look at the
00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:37.450
actual body movements that are gonna
00:04:37.450 --> 00:04:39.760
happen so let's take a look at kind of
00:04:39.760 --> 00:04:41.320
the critical phase if we look through
00:04:41.320 --> 00:04:43.810
impact what's going to be happening so
00:04:43.810 --> 00:04:46.330
we know that we want those risks to kind
00:04:46.330 --> 00:04:48.520
of be extending away from us right
00:04:48.520 --> 00:04:50.110
they're gonna be going like this so this
00:04:50.110 --> 00:04:51.880
left wrist is going to be going into
00:04:51.880 --> 00:04:54.700
owner deviation for sure the right wrist
00:04:54.700 --> 00:04:56.950
is going to be approaching ulnar
00:04:56.950 --> 00:04:58.390
deviation which is part of the reason
00:04:58.390 --> 00:05:00.730
why you will lose some of the flexion of
00:05:00.730 --> 00:05:03.370
your right wrist when you get into that
00:05:03.370 --> 00:05:06.040
final release phase now the important
00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:09.100
thing with the left wrist is as it as it
00:05:09.100 --> 00:05:12.669
loses some of its flexion it's going to
00:05:12.669 --> 00:05:14.590
want to drift more and more towards
00:05:14.590 --> 00:05:17.200
neutral so if you want to get those arms
00:05:17.200 --> 00:05:19.570
to extend like so you're gonna have to
00:05:19.570 --> 00:05:23.140
maintain some of the flexion or at least
00:05:23.140 --> 00:05:24.850
neutral but you're not going to be able
00:05:24.850 --> 00:05:26.560
to let that left wrist cut through
00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:29.650
impact so what we see a lot is amateurs
00:05:29.650 --> 00:05:31.090
tend to cut that wrist through impact
00:05:31.090 --> 00:05:33.850
that activates some of these flexors and
00:05:33.850 --> 00:05:36.220
now it's going to start quickly working
00:05:36.220 --> 00:05:40.590
up like so we're good players tend to
00:05:40.590 --> 00:05:42.640
keep that left wrist a little bit
00:05:42.640 --> 00:05:45.130
flatter a little bit longer that allows
00:05:45.130 --> 00:05:47.740
them to supinate and that allows them to
00:05:47.740 --> 00:05:49.900
keep that ulnar deviation which gets the
00:05:49.900 --> 00:05:51.780
bottom of the swing farther forward
00:05:51.780 --> 00:05:54.580
longer arc with kind of in the
00:05:54.580 --> 00:05:56.320
follow-through position which helps with
00:05:56.320 --> 00:05:58.780
consistency of contact so this is a two
00:05:58.780 --> 00:06:00.850
major coupled ones but let's take a look
00:06:00.850 --> 00:06:02.770
at the last piece which is pronation
00:06:02.770 --> 00:06:05.620
supination now pronation supination if
00:06:05.620 --> 00:06:07.000
you look at the muscles that actually do
00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:09.010
it most of them with the exception of
00:06:09.010 --> 00:06:11.140
one pronator are up here more in the
00:06:11.140 --> 00:06:13.270
elbow I mean your biggest supinator
00:06:13.270 --> 00:06:15.760
muscles are actually your biceps your
00:06:15.760 --> 00:06:18.039
bicep brachii there's another supinator
00:06:18.039 --> 00:06:19.360
muscle and then you've got your pronator
00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:21.310
is coming kind of one across here and
00:06:21.310 --> 00:06:24.729
one across there the supinator muscles
00:06:24.729 --> 00:06:26.530
are much bigger than the pronator
00:06:26.530 --> 00:06:30.010
muscles so trying to rotate your forearm
00:06:30.010 --> 00:06:32.710
like so is much more powerful than
00:06:32.710 --> 00:06:35.660
trying to rotate your forearm
00:06:35.660 --> 00:06:38.300
like this so what ends up happening is
00:06:38.300 --> 00:06:39.980
you see kind of two different dominant
00:06:39.980 --> 00:06:42.170
patterns you've got guys who get most of
00:06:42.170 --> 00:06:45.260
their speed from supination of the left
00:06:45.260 --> 00:06:47.600
wrist or you've got guys who get most of
00:06:47.600 --> 00:06:49.280
their speed from flexion on the right
00:06:49.280 --> 00:06:51.410
wrist but you rarely see people who are
00:06:51.410 --> 00:06:52.580
getting most of their speed from
00:06:52.580 --> 00:06:56.330
pronating that trail wrist so if you're
00:06:56.330 --> 00:06:58.190
trying to work on getting a little bit
00:06:58.190 --> 00:07:00.320
longer rotation or trying to work on
00:07:00.320 --> 00:07:02.150
getting a little bit more of this left
00:07:02.150 --> 00:07:03.920
wrist supination in the follow-through i
00:07:03.920 --> 00:07:05.900
think it's most important to focus on
00:07:05.900 --> 00:07:07.640
that left wrist doing the movement and
00:07:07.640 --> 00:07:09.560
not focusing on the trail wrist so
00:07:09.560 --> 00:07:11.480
hopefully that doesn't confuse me any
00:07:11.480 --> 00:07:13.100
more and hopefully that clears up a few
00:07:13.100 --> 00:07:14.480
things but if you have any questions
00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:16.460
feel free to email us at golf Smart
00:07:16.460 --> 00:07:18.530
Academy and we'll do our best to get
00:07:18.530 --> 00:07:19.790
more videos out there to help you
00:07:19.790 --> 00:07:21.590
understand how the body is actually
00:07:21.590 --> 00:07:24.460
swinging the club
