Some swing issues happen in pairs. A common connection is a flat shoulder plane (with an upper-body sway) with a bent arm and more arm lift at the top of the swing. If you struggle with either the arms bending at the top or a poor upper body pivot in the backswing then you can look at using the shoulder blades better to connect the two movements.

00:00:05.100 --> 00:00:09.000
This content video is connecting scapular control to spine
1
00:00:08.300 --> 00:00:11.400
extension. So this is primarily talking about
2
00:00:11.400 --> 00:00:14.300
topless swinging into transition, but there's
3
00:00:14.300 --> 00:00:17.300
a big relationship between what's going on with your
4
00:00:17.300 --> 00:00:20.100
shoulder blades how they're moving and what's going
5
00:00:20.100 --> 00:00:23.700
on with your spine. And so a common complaint
6
00:00:23.700 --> 00:00:26.800
of golfers is one of two two
7
00:00:26.800 --> 00:00:29.300
fold, either they tend to shift their upper body
8
00:00:29.300 --> 00:00:32.600
off the ball so they can get kind of flat shoulder
9
00:00:32.600 --> 00:00:35.700
plane. No extension have kind
10
00:00:35.700 --> 00:00:39.300
of upper body sway or more
11
00:00:38.300 --> 00:00:41.400
commonly golfers will complain of
12
00:00:41.400 --> 00:00:45.400
kind of bending the arms up at the top especially getting
13
00:00:44.400 --> 00:00:47.700
in that right arm behind into
14
00:00:47.700 --> 00:00:50.900
more of a flying flying elbow
15
00:00:50.900 --> 00:00:52.700
or getting across the line at the top.
16
00:00:53.800 --> 00:00:56.400
So the relationship between these two is
17
00:00:56.400 --> 00:00:59.500
loading different kind of
18
00:00:59.500 --> 00:01:02.200
fascial lines or loading different muscle patterns.
19
00:01:03.800 --> 00:01:06.600
Oftentimes if you're struggling with getting spine extension
20
00:01:06.600 --> 00:01:10.300
what's happening at the shoulders is contributing
21
00:01:09.300 --> 00:01:12.400
to you limit or having trouble getting
22
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:15.300
spine extension, the two things that tend to
23
00:01:15.300 --> 00:01:19.100
happen is if I if I kind of turn like this and and stay
24
00:01:18.100 --> 00:01:21.300
Flex forward then when I reach my arms
25
00:01:21.300 --> 00:01:24.300
up, I feel a big load on the underside of my arms
26
00:01:24.300 --> 00:01:27.600
kind of in my tricep and my lat I've really loaded this
27
00:01:27.600 --> 00:01:30.300
arm to be able to pull down or I've loaded
28
00:01:30.300 --> 00:01:33.000
it to be able to rotate down kind of
29
00:01:33.200 --> 00:01:36.500
like this and if I were to get into more spine extension
30
00:01:36.500 --> 00:01:39.500
there that it it doesn't feel as
31
00:01:39.500 --> 00:01:42.500
strong because I've kind of limited how well
32
00:01:42.500 --> 00:01:45.200
I can anchor it down here in my pelvis in my lower back.
33
00:01:45.900 --> 00:01:46.700
from the left arm
34
00:01:47.800 --> 00:01:50.300
The more that I kind of reach that shoulder across like
35
00:01:50.300 --> 00:01:53.600
here. I've loaded the let to really pull
36
00:01:53.600 --> 00:01:56.300
I've loaded the the shoulder blade into a
37
00:01:56.300 --> 00:01:59.800
position to pull again. If I got into this position here if
38
00:01:59.800 --> 00:02:02.300
I pulled really hard I would be really over the
39
00:02:02.300 --> 00:02:05.300
top and so from this position, it wouldn't
40
00:02:05.300 --> 00:02:08.300
make sense to pull. So the connection is if you're
41
00:02:08.300 --> 00:02:11.300
struggling with keeping your centered pivot, you want
42
00:02:11.300 --> 00:02:14.400
to look at your shoulder blades and you want to see if
43
00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:18.000
the right shoulder is staying more retracted,
44
00:02:17.400 --> 00:02:21.000
especially top of swinging into transition and
45
00:02:20.100 --> 00:02:23.600
you want to see if the left shoulder is having too much
46
00:02:23.600 --> 00:02:27.300
kind of reach and disconnect there oftentimes
47
00:02:26.300 --> 00:02:29.200
when it disconnects it pulls around
48
00:02:29.200 --> 00:02:32.600
and you'll see this right arm go shoulder up.
49
00:02:32.600 --> 00:02:35.300
Sometimes that's coming from the left shoulder. Sometimes that's
50
00:02:35.300 --> 00:02:39.100
coming from the right shoulder. So you want might want to experiment with some different feels
51
00:02:38.100 --> 00:02:41.300
or drills working on each individual shoulder to
52
00:02:41.300 --> 00:02:42.900
see where the real culprit is.
53
00:02:43.600 --> 00:02:46.200
alternatively, if you're having trouble getting your
54
00:02:46.200 --> 00:02:49.900
arms out of a really narrow bent position kind of
55
00:02:49.900 --> 00:02:50.900
like this then
56
00:02:52.100 --> 00:02:55.600
You don't want to just focus on keeping your arms extended because if
57
00:02:55.600 --> 00:02:58.200
you did keep your arms extended, that's probably about
58
00:02:58.200 --> 00:03:01.200
as long of a swing you as you would make and you wouldn't hit the
59
00:03:01.200 --> 00:03:05.000
ball anywhere. So if you are struggling
60
00:03:04.200 --> 00:03:07.900
with the arms tending to bend then if you're
61
00:03:07.900 --> 00:03:10.500
getting those shoulders more back, you can experiment with
62
00:03:10.500 --> 00:03:13.700
getting the chest pointing a little bit more up or going
63
00:03:13.700 --> 00:03:16.200
into more of a neutral hip position
64
00:03:16.200 --> 00:03:19.200
or a little bit more spinemen. So top of
65
00:03:19.200 --> 00:03:22.000
the Swing trying to get it looking kind of
66
00:03:22.400 --> 00:03:25.200
more up in that position as opposed to
67
00:03:25.200 --> 00:03:28.500
there highlight. The reason why
68
00:03:28.500 --> 00:03:32.300
we get in that position is usually this relationship between spidemen
69
00:03:31.300 --> 00:03:34.300
and shoulder connection. So if you're
70
00:03:34.300 --> 00:03:37.800
struggling with either with at the top or more of
71
00:03:37.800 --> 00:03:40.500
a centered pivot and getting good spine
72
00:03:40.500 --> 00:03:44.000
extension, then look at the relationship between the
73
00:03:43.100 --> 00:03:46.700
two check yourself on video and see if the shoulders are
74
00:03:46.700 --> 00:03:49.500
kind of breaking the pattern first or if
75
00:03:49.500 --> 00:03:51.800
it's the the spine that's causing the
76
00:03:52.100 --> 00:03:55.100
terms event. I'm I promise if you work on both of
77
00:03:55.100 --> 00:03:58.500
those you'll figure out which is the key component for you and that'll have
78
00:03:58.500 --> 00:04:01.400
a big impact on how you're improving your
79
00:04:01.400 --> 00:04:04.400
top of backswing position and your transition sequencing.
80
00:04:06.200 --> 00:04:09.800
Okay, so demo wise let's take a look at a couple of these patterns. So
81
00:04:09.800 --> 00:04:12.300
kind of the classic one. I'm going to keep my
82
00:04:12.300 --> 00:04:14.000
arms a little bit more straight.
83
00:04:17.400 --> 00:04:18.100
Kind of like that.
84
00:04:19.200 --> 00:04:22.600
And now if we I'm gonna
85
00:04:22.600 --> 00:04:25.100
let this right shoulder kind of
86
00:04:25.100 --> 00:04:29.700
pull the club back and you'll see that naturally
87
00:04:28.700 --> 00:04:31.200
I'm gonna stay a little bit more
88
00:04:31.200 --> 00:04:32.300
flexed.
89
00:04:34.200 --> 00:04:38.200
Now I hit the classic pull from there got a little steep and
90
00:04:37.200 --> 00:04:40.500
throwy felt like it got way around
91
00:04:40.500 --> 00:04:43.500
me. If you have a tendency to hit poles or slices
92
00:04:43.500 --> 00:04:47.000
that could be one of the contributing factors now on
93
00:04:46.300 --> 00:04:49.300
the next one. I'm gonna try to stay flexed over.
94
00:04:49.300 --> 00:04:52.200
I'm not going to focus too much on the arms.
95
00:04:52.200 --> 00:04:55.400
I'm gonna try to stay flexed over and what we'll see is
96
00:04:55.400 --> 00:04:58.200
once I get to about here because I'm gonna
97
00:04:58.200 --> 00:05:01.700
safex flexed over it's gonna limit some of my body rotation and
98
00:05:01.700 --> 00:05:04.900
my arms are gonna have run off to try to complete a backswing so
99
00:05:04.900 --> 00:05:07.100
we're gonna stay flexed over in turn.
100
00:05:08.600 --> 00:05:09.100
and again
101
00:05:10.200 --> 00:05:13.500
hit it. Okay felt very Army, but hit more of a pull pattern
102
00:05:13.500 --> 00:05:16.200
typically both of these will contribute to
103
00:05:16.200 --> 00:05:18.400
pulls and slices.
104
00:05:19.500 --> 00:05:22.700
Okay. So, let's see if you can identify now
105
00:05:22.700 --> 00:05:25.300
if I make what I feel like is a
106
00:05:25.300 --> 00:05:29.100
pretty good backswing if you can see the relationship between
107
00:05:28.100 --> 00:05:31.300
these shoulders and spine a little bit better.
108
00:05:35.600 --> 00:05:35.900
close
109
00:05:38.300 --> 00:05:38.600
Let's do one more.
110
00:05:39.600 --> 00:05:42.000
I want to end on that one more for me than for you
111
00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:42.100
guys.
112
00:05:43.800 --> 00:05:45.600
All right, so good backswing.
113
00:05:47.700 --> 00:05:48.200
That was better.
114
00:05:49.100 --> 00:05:50.000
little Hydra
115
00:05:50.500 --> 00:05:50.800
so
116
00:05:52.100 --> 00:05:55.100
investigate the shoulder spine complex if you're struggling with your
117
00:05:55.100 --> 00:05:56.300
top of Swing or transition.
