Connecting the Wipe to Supination

In this video, I address a member's question about connecting the wipe and supination. These two movements work together to create a balanced swing. The wipe, which involves shoulder and body movement, encourages a shallow and connected feel, while supination helps close the clubface and extend the swing path. Balancing these movements can improve your golf swing and prevent the ball from going off course. They work together as long as you engage them in the right areas: body for the wipe and forearm for supination. Remember, these two movements complement each other and don't fight each other when executed correctly.

00:00:05.030 --> 00:00:08.840
This concept video is connecting the wipe to supination. Um,

1
00:00:08.860 --> 00:00:11.440
so I had a member question come in about, um,

2
00:00:11.620 --> 00:00:16.440
having some trouble reconciling the wipe of the trail arm,

3
00:00:16.440 --> 00:00:19.040
kind of working more across the body, um,

4
00:00:19.060 --> 00:00:22.920
and the supination feeling like that lead arm rotates. Uh, his,

5
00:00:22.980 --> 00:00:27.240
his take was essentially that that lead arm rotation is gonna tend to cause that

6
00:00:27.240 --> 00:00:29.160
trail arm to go into more rotation,

7
00:00:29.540 --> 00:00:32.600
and that white movement would feel like it's going to, um,

8
00:00:32.600 --> 00:00:34.520
kind of hold the arm off. The,

9
00:00:34.540 --> 00:00:39.320
the crux of that is where you're feeling the rotation and what's happening at

10
00:00:39.320 --> 00:00:43.880
the shoulder blades. So these two moves balance each other, um,

11
00:00:44.220 --> 00:00:49.160
in a sense that the wipe helps create shalene and open the

12
00:00:49.160 --> 00:00:53.680
face, and the supination helps close the face while, uh,

13
00:00:54.230 --> 00:00:59.080
lengthening the radius or, or moving the path a little bit further, um,

14
00:00:59.270 --> 00:01:00.103
into, out.

15
00:01:00.340 --> 00:01:04.920
So they compliment each other as long as they're done in the appropriate zones.

16
00:01:05.300 --> 00:01:09.400
The, the wipe is more of a shoulder blade and kind of like, um,

17
00:01:09.580 --> 00:01:12.800
inside the armpit, or I talk about the sur anterior. Um,

18
00:01:12.800 --> 00:01:16.280
but it's more of a shoulder movement where the,

19
00:01:16.460 --> 00:01:20.600
the arm is working across this way instead of going into, um,

20
00:01:21.320 --> 00:01:25.000
internal rotation and protraction and flying away from the body like that.

21
00:01:25.220 --> 00:01:29.440
So this, the white movement can feel more dis or more connected. Um,

22
00:01:29.440 --> 00:01:34.280
and it can also feel more like the arms are doing less and I'm hitting

23
00:01:34.300 --> 00:01:37.600
it more with my core and my hips. Now, as I said,

24
00:01:38.060 --> 00:01:41.080
if I do that on paper, if I don't really,

25
00:01:41.410 --> 00:01:44.720
especially if I kind of maintain some of the, uh,

26
00:01:44.970 --> 00:01:48.280
connection in the trail hand, if I do that,

27
00:01:48.790 --> 00:01:53.160
then oftentimes the ball's gonna go off to the right unless I,

28
00:01:53.660 --> 00:01:56.400
um, made a forearm rotation.

29
00:01:56.460 --> 00:02:00.560
Now that forearm rotation can be challenging to just do, uh,

30
00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:03.520
with the trail hand, especially if I really, um,

31
00:02:03.830 --> 00:02:07.040
kind of like overdo the body rotation,

32
00:02:07.420 --> 00:02:11.960
it will tend to have a little bit more of a, uh, open club face situation.

33
00:02:13.140 --> 00:02:17.360
So the way that I'm going to balance it is by getting some forearm supination.

34
00:02:17.660 --> 00:02:21.960
Now, I don't want to confuse that with going into, um, internal rotation.

35
00:02:22.500 --> 00:02:26.240
The shoulder will go into internal rotation, but ideally, uh,

36
00:02:26.310 --> 00:02:30.280
kind of from a pattern wise, we're gonna get the forearm to rotate first.

37
00:02:30.860 --> 00:02:31.880
You can see when I do this,

38
00:02:32.140 --> 00:02:35.200
the elbow is staying pointing at the target as the forearm rotates,

39
00:02:35.200 --> 00:02:37.560
and then as it gets closer to its end range motion,

40
00:02:37.580 --> 00:02:39.680
the whole thing will rotate together. Um,

41
00:02:40.140 --> 00:02:43.160
but for many golfers feeling, uh,

42
00:02:43.860 --> 00:02:47.800
it will feel like it's primarily a forearm movement and not really a shoulder

43
00:02:48.120 --> 00:02:50.000
movement. But for a lot of golfers, it's actually,

44
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.720
it's challenging to disconnect the two. Um, oftentimes I'll,

45
00:02:54.820 --> 00:02:56.280
in kind of like a teaching phase,

46
00:02:56.550 --> 00:03:01.400
I'll have you grab one to the elbow just like this and then rotate

47
00:03:01.710 --> 00:03:06.000
that forearm, kind of like that. Now, if I did that with a club,

48
00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:10.500
if I held onto that forearm and then let the, or sorry,

49
00:03:10.500 --> 00:03:13.140
I held onto the elbow and let the forearm rotate,

50
00:03:13.140 --> 00:03:17.380
especially if I'm rotating my body, you'll see that as I'm making contact, um,

51
00:03:17.380 --> 00:03:20.900
the elbow stays pointing a little bit more towards the target compared if it

52
00:03:20.900 --> 00:03:23.580
rotated like this. Yes, if I lose that,

53
00:03:23.890 --> 00:03:27.260
then this arm is typically gonna get on top and it would be hard to create the

54
00:03:27.260 --> 00:03:31.100
white. But when the elbow is, when the shoulder is more in this position,

55
00:03:31.100 --> 00:03:32.060
so the elbow's pointing out,

56
00:03:32.060 --> 00:03:36.860
you'll see that actually encourages the feel of that right shoulder working a

57
00:03:36.860 --> 00:03:39.940
little bit more underneath. So in a nine to three,

58
00:03:40.380 --> 00:03:41.940
I could isolate either one of those.

59
00:03:42.140 --> 00:03:46.980
I could feel either the shoulder working the right shoulder down and around and

60
00:03:46.980 --> 00:03:49.500
through kind of staying connected. And I,

61
00:03:49.640 --> 00:03:54.500
or I could emphasize more the forearm rotation or

62
00:03:54.660 --> 00:03:56.300
supination, and you can see if I do both of them,

63
00:03:56.690 --> 00:04:00.300
then I'm gonna get a very shallow bottom of the swing, um,

64
00:04:00.450 --> 00:04:04.580
with kind of a widening radius and a club face that's, uh, rotating.

65
00:04:05.680 --> 00:04:07.420
So, uh, if you're,

66
00:04:08.400 --> 00:04:13.340
if you look at video and you tend to have kind of more of a scoop here at the

67
00:04:13.340 --> 00:04:14.220
bottom, um,

68
00:04:14.330 --> 00:04:18.740
that could be a sign of either needing more s of the wipe or more of the

69
00:04:18.860 --> 00:04:21.460
supination. Um, but more likely it's both. Uh,

70
00:04:21.850 --> 00:04:24.940
usually you'll have one that is kind of like more dominant and that's the one

71
00:04:24.940 --> 00:04:26.700
that your brain can go in on.

72
00:04:26.880 --> 00:04:31.620
You can either feel more of the lead arm kind of getting into this

73
00:04:31.990 --> 00:04:34.700
kinda like hit position right here,

74
00:04:34.760 --> 00:04:38.900
or you'll feel more like this side comes through and there's just a little bit

75
00:04:39.250 --> 00:04:42.660
more of a release. But these two actually compliment each other. Um,

76
00:04:43.200 --> 00:04:45.540
the only way they fight each other is if you're doing it from the wrong spot,

77
00:04:45.540 --> 00:04:47.820
if you're doing it more from the shoulders, um,

78
00:04:47.970 --> 00:04:52.780
instead of from kind of the body on the wipe side and the forearm on the

79
00:04:52.860 --> 00:04:57.460
supination side. So one more little,

80
00:04:58.840 --> 00:05:02.100
little demo if we get really good, uh,

81
00:05:02.650 --> 00:05:04.940
feeling of wipe and supination,

82
00:05:10.320 --> 00:05:11.060
pretty solid.
