There are a number of ways that you can make adjustments for controlling distance. Here are some of my favorites:
- Keeping the same tempo, make a larger swing
- Keeping the same swing, change the tempo (this is a risky technique)
- Change the clubface to more open or more square
- Change clubs but use the same swing

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,000
In this drill video, we're going to talk about distance control with the FNS wedge swing.
00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:11,000
Now there are a number of ways I suggest four different ways that you can use to control
00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:13,000
distance when you're around the greens.
00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:19,000
So if you just get comfortable making these little three inch reverse sequence type swing
00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:23,000
motions where you have a little bit more of a chop action and you can get the club to
00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:25,000
bottom out.
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:30,000
Obviously just making one style swing isn't going to work or one distance swing.
00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:36,000
So what I recommend is you can control the distance the ball is going to go by either changing
00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:37,000
ball position.
00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:38,000
That's really easy.
00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:39,000
Changing clubs.
00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:40,000
That's another one that's really easy.
00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:43,000
Opening or closing the face to add more loft.
00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:45,000
It's another easy one.
00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:49,000
And then the last one would be changing the length of your swing.
00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:54,000
The one that you can do that I don't recommend is changing your rate of acceleration.
00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:58,000
I encourage all of my students to try and find gravity.
00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:00,000
So gravity is constant force, right?
00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:04,000
It's always pulling at the same rate no matter how big you are or where you are.
00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:09,000
If I take this club and let it swing, gravity is the only thing really speeding it up.
00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:15,000
So if I take it back a certain distance because it's accelerating at the same rate, it's
00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:19,000
pretty easy to control how far the ball is going to go or how fast the club is swinging.
00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:26,000
But if I were to bring it back this far and then artificially speed it up, now I'm going
00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:31,000
to have to artificially speed it up the same amount every time in order to have control.
00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:36,000
So the easy way just like in putting, you can either have always the same length
00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:41,000
stroke and just change your rate of acceleration or always have the same rate of acceleration
00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:43,000
and change the length of the stroke.
00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:49,000
So the first and easiest way is to get used to changing the length of the swing.
00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:56,000
So that swing right there may hit the ball 15 yards and that going a little bit further,
00:01:56,000 --> 00:01:58,000
may hit it 20.
00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:00,000
Everybody's going to be a little different.
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:03,000
So that's option number one is just changing the length of your swing.
00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:06,000
Option number two is opening and closing the face.
00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:11,000
So when we say opening and closing the face, that doesn't mean you take your normal grip
00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:15,000
and then you position your hands differently like so.
00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:21,000
Because during the swing they're just going to go back to that natural neutral joint alignment.
00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:25,000
What I recommend to do instead is take the grip and hold it in the right hand out in front
00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:29,000
of you so you have a constant reference point.
00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:33,000
So my normal for a finesse wedge may be vertical like so.
00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:38,000
My normal for a full swing may be 2030 degrees close.
00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:44,000
Well if I want to, I could go 10 degrees open and now I have a little bit more loft.
00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:47,000
I have a little bit more bounce and this is going to hit the ball a little bit higher.
00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:50,000
Option two, I could always just switch clubs.
00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:54,000
If I need to hit the ball a little bit further, I could take one with less loft.
00:02:54,000 --> 00:02:58,000
If I need to hit the ball a little bit shorter, I could take one with more loft.
00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:05,000
And then lastly, which I talked about in the setup video is you can always vary your ball position.
00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:13,000
So using the same club and having a ball position that's either off your heel, off the midfoot
00:03:13,000 --> 00:03:19,000
or off more of the middle of your stance, if I make the same relative swing, I'm going
00:03:19,000 --> 00:03:22,000
to get slightly different trajectories and slightly different amounts of roll.
00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:27,000
So those are the four ways that I recommend that around the greens you play around with
00:03:27,000 --> 00:03:28,000
controlling your distance.
