Driver Path Check Points

The functional swing plane is typically consistent from shaft parallel in the downswing to shaft parallel in the follow through for good players. This makes the two shaft parallel positions good check points to use when looking at your own swing on video. For the driver, the goal is to have the path more inside on the shaft parallel on the downswing, and slightly outside on the shaft parallel on the follow through. If you do that, then you know that you will have a shallow path through the ball, and as long as you can control the face, you will tend to hit consistent straight shots.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
The Striver video is looking at path checkpoints for the driver.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So path checkpoints is basically looking at if I'm making some swings looking at

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:15,000
shaft parallel when it's down the line and shaft parallel in the follow-through.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:21,000
Now when we're looking at specifically for the driver, we want to have compared to this

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:22,000
checkpoint.

00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:28,000
If we'll say neutral is just inside my hands kind of like so, well because I'm going to have

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:33,000
a little bit wider stance and a little bit more tilt, you can see that that is going to

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:38,000
or I should say that lower body a little bit more ahead of the upper body.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:44,000
You can see that by itself moves the hands a little bit more towards the inside.

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:48,000
And then if I let them swing, that would naturally move the club a little bit outside

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:49,000
the hands.

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:53,000
If you're checking that follow-through and you tend to see the club in line with your hands,

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:57,000
then you're going to be a little bit more neutral than you're looking for for the driver.

00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:02,000
As I'm swinging slightly low to high, I need to have the path even more in-out in order

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:06,000
to have that the club had actually moving at the target.

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:13,000
So you can use the checkpoints of shaft parallel and regardless of what you're trying to do,

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:18,000
you can just monitor, well where if the club is way out here, I know I'm going to be in trouble

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:23,000
if it's too much in there, maybe I just haven't turned as much with the driver.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:27,000
You want to air on having it more inside than less.

00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:32,000
The one caveat is in order to get it more inside, a lot of golfers fall into early extension

00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:35,000
and that's when it becomes a major problem.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:41,000
Similarly, I want to have my arms kind of lifting a little bit or working more high in

00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:45,000
a way so the club will be slightly outside there.

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:51,000
If I tend to get the club which is good for an iron going way low left, that's going to

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:53,000
tend to cause angle of attack issues.

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:58,000
So I can focus on those two ends of the spectrum and just make sure it's going slightly

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:16,000
inside to slightly outside as it relates to the driver.

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:21,000
To help clarify the idea of the path checkpoints, we're going to take a look at my own swing

00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:24,000
looking at an iron and a driver from down the line.

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:27,000
Here we can see at the top of the swing.

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:32,000
Overall, mostly the same you can see that there's a little bit more body turn.

00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:37,000
You can see that the arms are on a little flatter plane and there's a little bit less of

00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:39,000
the left side tilt.

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:43,000
But most of the interesting stuff is going to happen on the downswing.

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:48,000
The first path to checkpoint we're going to take a look at is when I get the roughly the

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:51,000
shaft parallel to the ground.

00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:59,000
So the cameras in the same place and I set up more or less with my hands on the pretty

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:04,000
much over the stick here or just on the inside of it.

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:05,000
That was my goal anyway.

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:07,000
That's the target line.

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:14,000
So as you can see, the hands compared to the stick are relatively close.

00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:18,000
I mean the one over here on the left with the driver is just slightly inside the stick.

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:23,000
But compared to where the hands are, you can see that with the driver there are a few

00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:24,000
things that are different.

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:29,000
One, the club is a little bit more inside my hands.

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:35,000
And I actually believe that that would be the true shaft parallel frame where you'll see

00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:38,000
that it's even more slightly inside my hands.

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:40,000
But the club faces in a similar position.

00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:44,000
So it just shows that the path with the driver is coming a little bit more from a shallow

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:45,000
position.

00:03:46,000 --> 00:03:51,000
Now as you know from the steeps and shallows, the more that you rotate your body, the

00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:54,000
more that that's going to tend to bring the club on a steep path.

00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:58,000
But if you look at the orientation of my chest and my hips, you can see that I have more

00:03:58,000 --> 00:04:01,000
body rotation here on the left.

00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:05,000
You can also see that my foot is more off the ground because I'm powering this a little

00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:07,000
bit more with my body.

00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:10,000
And unfortunately, I had a little bit of early extension.

00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:19,000
Now as I continue down and take it to impact, you can see that the result of those path

00:04:19,000 --> 00:04:25,000
checkpoints is that in the one over on the left because it was coming more from the inside,

00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:27,000
I've gone into a little bit more extension.

00:04:27,000 --> 00:04:28,000
My upper body is closer to the camera.

00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:35,000
It's actually a little bit behind my lower body or a fair amount behind my lower body.

00:04:35,000 --> 00:04:41,000
As a result, I've got more body rotation and more side bend and my trail arm or my

00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:44,000
right arm is a little bit more bent.

00:04:44,000 --> 00:04:51,000
Now as I go through, you'll see those arms extend and the club will roughly get slightly

00:04:51,000 --> 00:04:56,000
outside my hands as it approaches that waist height position.

00:04:56,000 --> 00:05:00,000
Now over on the right with the iron because my upper body is a little bit more on top

00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:01,000
of my lower body.

00:05:01,000 --> 00:05:04,000
I still have a little bit more flex.

00:05:04,000 --> 00:05:12,000
The club is going to be working more low and left so when it gets in that same position,

00:05:12,000 --> 00:05:15,000
you can see that it is working in line with my hands wherever on the right.

00:05:15,000 --> 00:05:19,000
It is working a little bit more outside of my hands.

00:05:19,000 --> 00:05:24,000
So if you're struggling with your driver, hopefully this little video and demonstration

00:05:24,000 --> 00:05:29,000
helps you visualize what we want to do with the driver between shaft parallel in the

00:05:29,000 --> 00:05:34,000
down swing and shaft parallel in the follow through but using those two checkpoints can

00:05:34,000 --> 00:05:37,000
unlock a lot of path problems and help you with your overall consistency.
