Driver Vs Iron Backswing

After setting up a little differently for the driver, we are going to make a few slightly different moves than in the iron swing. The pivot is going to be more core driven, so the arms may set a little bit later. Getting behind the ball is more important, so many players have a little bit of sway off the ball during the backswing. Lastly, the amount of left tilt will be a little bit less because the pelvis will be slightly more level than with the iron. All of these things help set up the proper position for a good downswing with axis tilt and a good flat spot.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,000
This video we're going to highlight the differences between the driver and the irons as far as the backswing is concerned.

00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:12,000
Now I am a big believer that you want to build a downswing first before you're all the backswing stuff really matters

00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:17,000
but there are things that can happen in the backswing that make what you're trying to do in the downswing more problematic.

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:19,000
So it is useful to train.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:29,000
When it comes to the driver, we want to remember that we are trying to have this kind of good tilt, good access to shallow angle of the tack

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:34,000
and overly closed clubface in order to hit really good shots with the driver.

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:39,000
Well, the things that will affect us in the backswing are things that are going to make that harder.

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:44,000
So in the stock section we talk about that left tilt.

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:49,000
Well, the important thing to understand is yes, I'm still going to have about the same amount of left tilt to the spine.

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:58,000
But the difference is because with the driver I'm going to start from a little bit more tilted away from the target like this,

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:03,000
and my stance is a little bit wider and I'm going to have more of a lateral shift.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:10,000
It's not going to look quite as dramatic as it would with an iron.

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:22,000
So if I take an iron from the down the line and I make that good kind of backswing position where everything is kind of pointed down there.

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:26,000
And now I adjusted this just by taking slightly wider stance.

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:30,000
I'm keeping the same amount of left tilt, believe it or not.

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:37,000
But because I'm changing the orientation of my pelvis slightly, I'm moving my pelvis slightly more forward instead of letting it load,

00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:42,000
it's going to change the way that the tilt actually looks.

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:47,000
So it's less of a priority with the driver to have that left tilt.

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:51,000
It's okay to have those shoulders get a little bit more flat.

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:56,000
And the other, there are three major differences when we're talking specifically about the driver.

00:01:56,000 --> 00:01:59,000
The first one is that amount of left tilt.

00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:05,000
It doesn't have to be as much as we have with the driver mostly because of what's happening in number two,

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:10,000
which is number two, I want to make sure that I get a very good load and pressure shift to the right.

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
With the iron, it's okay to be a little bit more centered, a little bit more stacked, if you will,

00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:20,000
in order to control where that low point is.

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:24,000
But with the driver, because I'm trying to have the low point slightly behind the ball,

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:30,000
I'm trying to have this flat angle of attack, and I'm trying to power it with my lower body and get in that good access tilt,

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:34,000
it's more important to have a little bit more of that pressure shift.

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:41,000
So a lot of good drivers that are all fall actually have a little bit of that tour sway,

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:47,000
where that lower body tends to shift a little bit more off the golf ball.

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:55,000
If you tend to get really steep and stay on top of it, you're going to have to drift so far back with your upper body during the release,

00:02:55,000 --> 00:02:58,000
that it can cause sequencing issues and contact issues.

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:02,000
So having that load can be extremely useful.

00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:09,000
And then the third thing is this kind of wrist hinge or wrist set with the iron swing,

00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:15,000
because I'm going to be a little bit more centered, I'm going to tend to set the wrist a little bit sooner.

00:03:15,000 --> 00:03:20,000
With the driver in this wide position, I'm going to tend to have a little bit more of that float load,

00:03:20,000 --> 00:03:24,000
or almost that later wrist set.

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:30,000
You can get away with the earlyness, but I always like to air on the side of which extreme could I go to.

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:36,000
You could have extreme float load with the driver, and it wouldn't cause as many contact issues as if you did it with the irons.

00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:40,000
And it would help provide some shalonist to the path as well as power.

00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:42,000
So I'm recapping the three major differences.

00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:45,000
We're going to have a little bit less left tilt.

00:03:45,000 --> 00:03:50,000
We're going to have a little bit bigger pressure shift or a little bit more sway off the ball.

00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:56,000
And it's more of a body driven pivot, so you're going to have a little bit later wrist set,

00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:04,000
because the body is controlling even a little bit longer in order to create that kind of full turn behind the golf ball.

00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:13,000
If you do those three things, then you're at least set up to do the differences that we talk about in the downswing for adjusting for what's going on with the driver.

00:04:13,000 --> 00:04:20,000
And if you're normally a good driver, they're golf ball, you probably do all these things naturally, and you have to do the opposite if you're trying to get good with wedges.

00:04:20,000 --> 00:04:28,000
So, know your game, know your situation, and that way you'll be able to figure out and prioritize what's the most important things for you to work on,

00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:36,000
and how to adjust it for the swing, such as the driver or the wedges, if your swing is not already geared specifically for those issues.
