Face Rotation With A Sharpie

A couple of pens, rubber banded to the shaft, can be a powerful visual training aid for working on the face rotation of the club through impact.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,000
In this drill video, we're going to use pens to help us feel face rotation.

00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:10,000
So I've got a Sharpie that's tapered down, or that's rubber banded down there.

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:17,000
Basically what you do is you're going to take the rubber band like so, wrap it underneath

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:19,000
and then around the other side.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:24,000
And then position these two pens so that they're parallel to each other and both of them

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:27,000
are roughly perpendicular to the face.

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:31,000
That's a little off, but it doesn't have to be perfect.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:34,000
All right, now we're going to go through the drill.

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:35,000
That's the easy setup.

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:38,000
Let's go through the drill on how to use this.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:44,000
So for the sake of working on face rotation or understanding face rotation, sometimes

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:48,000
it's complicated and hard to see exactly where the face is pointed.

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:53,000
Even if you have one of those fancy little alignment things, it's not very visually attractive

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:55,000
or visually specific.

00:00:55,000 --> 00:01:00,000
So what I like to do is take pens and rubber band them to the shaft.

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:04,000
And so now, if I'm facing this way, you can see that the pens are parallel.

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:06,000
I'm no longer thinking about the club face.

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:08,000
I'm just thinking about the pens.

00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:11,000
If I were to go back, that's still parallel.

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:13,000
That's still parallel.

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:17,000
Well the face rotation in the golf swing would be this would point a little bit up and then

00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:20,000
it's gradually going to point until this looks a little bit down.

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:28,000
Or from the down the line view, it would go to parallel to pointing roughly 30, 40 degrees

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:29,000
behind me.

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:30,000
I'll do that in the direction of the target.

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:34,000
So it goes roughly to parallel with just natural rotation.

00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:40,000
With natural rotation, these are pointing 30, 40 degrees down towards the ground.

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:44,000
If you're a slicer, I tend to want you to try to get these point at a normal murder

00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:49,000
point straight down at the ground because that will ensure that the club rotation is

00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:54,000
tapping soon enough that the club face will be pointed in the direction of the target

00:01:54,000 --> 00:01:56,000
or take away your slice.

00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:02,000
Because if you do the motorcycle move or the screwdriver move, it is impossible to slice

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:03,000
the ball.

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:07,000
Now a lot of golfers think that they do the motorcycle move and so they say, yeah, I'm working

00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:09,000
on it, but I'm still slicing the ball.

00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:12,000
And I will tell them, you're not actually doing it.

00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:15,000
You think you're doing it, but you need more feedback because you're not able to pay

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:16,000
attention to it.

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:22,000
The pens provide a little bit more of this feedback and depending on how tightly you

00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:27,000
have the rubber bands on, you can actually hit balls and take a look.

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:31,000
Now the torque of the shaft, you can see that they no longer line up perfectly, but this

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:36,000
one didn't change a whole lot and it is now pointed down at the ground.

00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:39,000
This one moved because there's a lot more things happening down at the club head and

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:42,000
to the golf club when you go through the impact.

00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:47,000
So you can use pens to give you some visual feedback as far as how to understand and

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:48,000
practice this face rotation.
