Feeling The Weight Of The Clubhead - Putting

While a great putting stroke does not swing exactly like a pendulum, it does share a few characteristics that can be useful to golfers; this is especially true for players who struggle with distance control or an imbalanced stroke. Overall, this concept can bring a huge boost in awareness to how and when energy is transferred from the body to the putter, which should lead to improved consistency and less three-putts.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This concept video is feeling the weight of the clubbed.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:11,000
So while it's true that the putter doesn't actually swing like a true pendulum, it does

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:14,000
share some properties similar to a pendulum.

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:20,000
So one way that I'll help golfers feel a little bit more consistent rhythm is if

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:24,000
or consistent acceleration, I should say, is if you take your putter and you grip it out

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:28,000
in front of you like this and then you just bring it back and just kind of let it go

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:35,000
back and forth and you try to just kind of let it swing from about the same height and

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:38,000
the backstroke to the through stroke.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:45,000
And then you close your eyes and I'll just ask, okay, now how does that compare to your normal

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:46,000
putting stroke?

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:54,000
And most golfers will say that that feels either slow or long or it's like it's decelerating,

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:57,000
like it doesn't feel anything like the putting stroke.

00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:00,000
So then what I'll do is all apply force to the pendulum.

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:05,000
So I'll either apply force right at the beginning, kind of like this, you see with my as closed

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:10,000
or I'll apply right at the bottom kind of like that.

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:15,000
And oftentimes golfers who have distance control problems will feel the putting stroke

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:21,000
very similar to that second one where they bring it back and then right when they get

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:24,000
to impact they're trying to apply a force.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:28,000
And that's basically like speeding the putter up just like that and you'll see that when

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:32,000
I do that I have a much longer follow through than I do backswing.

00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:38,000
And that's one of the other traits that typically you'll see with poor lag putters is that

00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:43,000
they're typically more mismatched where it's a shorter backstroke and then a really long

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:46,000
follow through due to over acceleration.

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:52,000
So then once I have this feeling of kind of letting the putter drop and letting it just

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:58,000
kind of swing itself then I point out that the center of the where the putter is swinging

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:00,000
around is not what I'm holding.

00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:06,000
So I'm not doing this pendulum with my hands but the center of the pendulum is actually

00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:08,000
the front of my spine.

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:16,000
So if I had it here now I'm feeling like my my whole shoulders, arms and club will feel

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:20,000
like the weight of the club not just what I felt in my hands.

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:27,000
So now I'm trying to get that feeling of just the putter swinging about the same distance

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:34,000
back and through with its fastest speed right at the bottom not accelerating harshly through

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:35,000
the ball.

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:40,000
I think that a lot of golfers who have poor touch tend to over accelerate the putter through

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:41,000
the ball.

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:50,000
So then once I have this feeling I'm going to try and apply it with the golf ball and just

00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:56,000
kind of pay attention to the feel of matching the stroke or matching the length of

00:02:56,000 --> 00:03:00,000
follow through to the backswing.

00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:06,000
One other way that all for some golfers this works really well for others it doesn't

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:07,000
quite translate.

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:12,000
So then I have a couple other ways that I'll help them feel kind of hitting it more with

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:18,000
the the wrecking ball of the putter as I like to call it versus really accelerating it.

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:22,000
So one other way is if you bring your arm up to your side and then you just relax your

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:30,000
muscles it will accelerate into your side and I'll compare that to a guiding stroke where

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:35,000
I'm kind of bringing it in like this or I'll compare that to an acceleration stroke where

00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:42,000
you can see a lot of tension and it almost like stays up against my side instead of just

00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:43,000
bouncing off of it.

00:03:43,000 --> 00:03:49,000
So if I'm truly just letting it drop then there's this feeling of it hitting with dead weight

00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:53,000
and it's accelerating right into it but then right when it hits it there's a little bit

00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:54,000
of a stop.

00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:59,000
So I'll use that feeling as well but again that feeling is not just arms and hands that's

00:03:59,000 --> 00:04:03,000
happening more from my spine and up in my upper body.

00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:10,000
So now if I want to get that feeling of dropping I bring it back and I just let the putter

00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:17,000
kind of drop and it's reach its maximum acceleration at the ball.

00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:25,000
Here's the stick is aimed just at touch to the left and finally we get one online.

00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:29,000
So this feeling of dropping the putter into the wall will help you be able to control

00:04:29,000 --> 00:04:35,000
your speed control which is one of the more important skills for really elevating your

00:04:35,000 --> 00:04:36,000
putting game.

00:04:36,000 --> 00:04:40,000
So if you're struggling with your tempo or your distance control you can use either

00:04:40,000 --> 00:04:46,000
this feeling of swinging the putter or dropping the arm into the side and then you can

00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:54,000
measure progress either by the meter stick drill or by the three balls the same drill.

00:04:54,000 --> 00:04:58,000
But either way that should help with your acceleration rate and controlling your distance

00:04:58,000 --> 00:04:59,000
control.
