The flipper hug is an exercise that invokes the image of your arms being straight and your arms squeezing together. This is a stark contrast to the arms bending and pulling that accompany the chicken wing pattern. For most golfers, the biggest differences are the feeling of the lead arm being more across the body and the trail arm being less rotated.

00:00:05.400 --> 00:00:08.200
This drill is flipper hug. So flipper hug is for
1
00:00:08.200 --> 00:00:11.500
work. For those of you who have more of kind of a pull and chicken
2
00:00:11.500 --> 00:00:14.600
wing down in the bottom that can be a frustrating pattern where
3
00:00:14.600 --> 00:00:17.600
basically your arms are bending and collapsing
4
00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:20.400
and what we would see on 3D is as you
5
00:00:20.400 --> 00:00:23.600
get towards impact the space between your elbows is
6
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:26.500
actually increasing where on average
7
00:00:26.500 --> 00:00:29.400
the tour Pros are going to have the space
8
00:00:29.400 --> 00:00:33.300
decrease. I've seen as much as seven eight inches
9
00:00:32.300 --> 00:00:36.100
where the elbows are getting closer through
10
00:00:35.100 --> 00:00:38.600
that release pattern and reaching their narrowest point
11
00:00:38.600 --> 00:00:41.400
right around here. So the flipper hug
12
00:00:41.400 --> 00:00:44.300
is the idea of both arms kind of meeting in
13
00:00:44.300 --> 00:00:47.400
the middle as we're releasing.
14
00:00:48.600 --> 00:00:51.000
So for a lot of golfers who have more of a
15
00:00:51.300 --> 00:00:54.300
chicken wing pattern, what would happen is the arms kind of pull in
16
00:00:54.300 --> 00:00:58.600
and behind on a more like this done
17
00:00:57.600 --> 00:01:01.000
at the right time that helps Propel or
18
00:01:00.500 --> 00:01:04.900
throw the club head past but it
19
00:01:04.900 --> 00:01:07.300
prevents your body from doing a lot of good things.
20
00:01:07.300 --> 00:01:10.300
It causes the club to pass too soon and
21
00:01:10.300 --> 00:01:13.400
it really deprives the lengthening that creates the flat spot.
22
00:01:13.400 --> 00:01:16.000
So it comes more inconsistent you usually get a
23
00:01:16.200 --> 00:01:18.300
lot of toe hits but
24
00:01:19.500 --> 00:01:22.300
Regardless of what kind of feedback you're getting if you see it on
25
00:01:22.300 --> 00:01:25.100
video that your arm is kind of finishing behind you like this.
26
00:01:25.100 --> 00:01:28.900
This can be a helpful drill or image. So the
27
00:01:28.900 --> 00:01:31.400
flipper hog is basically you're gonna pretend you're
28
00:01:31.400 --> 00:01:34.400
a penguin. So your arms are straight and then you're gonna try and bring
29
00:01:34.400 --> 00:01:37.900
your arms across more like this. And now
30
00:01:37.900 --> 00:01:40.300
I usually like to then get the back
31
00:01:40.300 --> 00:01:43.900
of your hands touching kind of like that. And now those
32
00:01:43.900 --> 00:01:46.300
elbows are really close together. I'm gonna
33
00:01:46.300 --> 00:01:49.300
take that position and bring it into the follow-through and you're just gonna ask
34
00:01:49.300 --> 00:01:52.100
yourself which flipper feels more different. Is it more
35
00:01:52.100 --> 00:01:55.100
that the left arm is across your body. That's the more common
36
00:01:55.100 --> 00:01:58.700
one or is it more than the right arm is a cross your body because when
37
00:01:58.700 --> 00:02:01.300
it goes a part like this the arms
38
00:02:01.300 --> 00:02:04.100
are either away or behind and so this kind of
39
00:02:04.100 --> 00:02:07.800
helps you feel the the right word
40
00:02:07.800 --> 00:02:08.800
to use for your brain.
41
00:02:09.700 --> 00:02:12.200
So now timing we're going to try to get
42
00:02:12.200 --> 00:02:14.800
the flipper hug feeling from right around here.
43
00:02:15.800 --> 00:02:18.000
All the way until there. In fact,
44
00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:21.200
I'll sometimes do it all the way up into more of a 10 to 2
45
00:02:21.200 --> 00:02:25.300
style where we're getting well into the finish. So we're
46
00:02:24.300 --> 00:02:27.700
first going to do this as more of a kind of
47
00:02:27.700 --> 00:02:30.400
a broken or a stop drill where we're
48
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:32.900
just going to get into that position there.
49
00:02:34.400 --> 00:02:38.000
And then from there we're gonna feel like we squeeze
50
00:02:37.300 --> 00:02:40.600
those arms together and especially that
51
00:02:40.600 --> 00:02:43.300
left arm staying more across your
52
00:02:43.300 --> 00:02:43.500
body.
53
00:02:45.300 --> 00:02:46.800
at the extreme version
54
00:02:48.700 --> 00:02:51.600
I will tend to try to have them meet over
55
00:02:51.600 --> 00:02:54.300
on the right side of the body more like this. If you really
56
00:02:54.300 --> 00:02:57.300
have a big kind of chicken wing pull pattern
57
00:02:57.300 --> 00:03:00.300
that releasing more
58
00:03:00.300 --> 00:03:03.700
on the right side of your body kind of like this as I
59
00:03:03.700 --> 00:03:06.100
then got down and turned my
60
00:03:06.100 --> 00:03:09.500
body actually get to closer to more in
61
00:03:09.500 --> 00:03:12.700
the midline, especially if you're used to bringing the
62
00:03:12.700 --> 00:03:15.200
arms across like here then if I did have
63
00:03:15.200 --> 00:03:18.700
some turn you could see that really big narranous and and chicken
64
00:03:18.700 --> 00:03:19.000
wing pattern.
65
00:03:20.300 --> 00:03:23.200
So let's do another of this flipper hug.
66
00:03:23.200 --> 00:03:26.900
We're kind of this arm is feeling like it's working across or
67
00:03:26.900 --> 00:03:27.200
the
68
00:03:28.200 --> 00:03:31.200
The arms are squeezing more along the right
69
00:03:31.200 --> 00:03:34.500
side of the body kind of like that. So a little nine to
70
00:03:34.500 --> 00:03:37.000
three 10 to 10 to 2ish. We're gonna
71
00:03:37.900 --> 00:03:40.200
spin it back and you'll see there. Those arms are close together
72
00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:43.200
and it's a little bit more kind of off to the right side
73
00:03:43.200 --> 00:03:43.600
of your body.
74
00:03:44.200 --> 00:03:47.600
So if you struggle with a chicken wing, really Diggy contact tow
75
00:03:47.600 --> 00:03:50.400
hits poles or just the general
76
00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:53.400
inconsistency that comes from the look of these this
77
00:03:53.400 --> 00:03:56.500
being narrow on the way through then work
78
00:03:56.500 --> 00:03:59.700
on your flipper hug. That's a feeling of the shoulder squeezing
79
00:03:59.700 --> 00:04:02.400
together or the elbow squeezing together
80
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:05.500
during the release pattern getting into the
81
00:04:05.500 --> 00:04:08.400
closest position pretty much at your
82
00:04:09.600 --> 00:04:12.700
Follow through position right there and then keeping them close if
83
00:04:12.700 --> 00:04:15.300
you start working at Mooring up into your full finish.
