Hands Forward Up and Out

Shaft lean at impact is helpful for making contact in the middle of the face as well as moving ground contact further forward. The wrists anatomically move in more of a diagonal pattern. So to move the wrists forward, they also will move into more of an unhinged position. A phrase I use is "forward, up, and out". In this video, I'll explain how to practice shaft lean by focusing on the wrists.

1
00:00:05.100 --> 00:00:08.700
This content video is hands forward hands up and out. So

2
00:00:08.700 --> 00:00:11.300
this is connecting shaft lean and

3
00:00:11.600 --> 00:00:14.100
ulnar deviation. A lot of golfers who struggle with

4
00:00:14.100 --> 00:00:18.700
getting shaft lean also struggle with getting older deviation and it's

5
00:00:18.700 --> 00:00:21.200
kind of working on your balance of Steeps and

6
00:00:21.200 --> 00:00:24.200
shallows as it relates to the moment of impact. So it

7
00:00:24.200 --> 00:00:27.800
kind of ties together a few different kind of subcategories for

8
00:00:27.800 --> 00:00:31.000
us. So if you're working on getting shaft

9
00:00:30.200 --> 00:00:33.300
lean one thing that I emphasize a lot

10
00:00:33.300 --> 00:00:34.900
is if you

11
00:00:36.200 --> 00:00:40.500
From the down the line camera if I just move the grip across

12
00:00:39.500 --> 00:00:42.300
the shaft. So if I just move it

13
00:00:42.300 --> 00:00:45.700
straight forward like this, it feels like it gets really low

14
00:00:45.700 --> 00:00:49.000
and I feel like I'm gonna get Diggy there. What would

15
00:00:48.300 --> 00:00:51.600
actually feel more comfortable is if as it

16
00:00:51.600 --> 00:00:54.600
goes across it also goes up and

17
00:00:54.600 --> 00:00:55.500
a little bit more out.

18
00:00:56.600 --> 00:00:59.100
So the the trajectory is kind

19
00:00:59.100 --> 00:01:02.400
of creating more space like this as it's getting ahead.

20
00:01:03.500 --> 00:01:05.300
from the Steep shallow standpoint

21
00:01:06.400 --> 00:01:09.300
When the hands go down that creates more of a

22
00:01:09.300 --> 00:01:12.400
steep and when the hands go backward

23
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:16.000
that creates more of a shallow the opposite would be as the

24
00:01:15.400 --> 00:01:18.200
hands go forward that creates more of

25
00:01:18.200 --> 00:01:22.000
a steep and then as the hands go up that creates more of a shallow. So

26
00:01:21.400 --> 00:01:24.500
if I just get my hands Way Forward

27
00:01:24.500 --> 00:01:27.200
the club would have a tendency to really dig into the

28
00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:30.300
ground. But as my hands get more up

29
00:01:30.300 --> 00:01:33.400
and out as they get forward. I get

30
00:01:33.400 --> 00:01:36.500
shaft lean without getting really Diggy contact. So

31
00:01:36.500 --> 00:01:39.600
I'm able to still get a shallow bottom of the swing just

32
00:01:39.600 --> 00:01:41.500
with the low point being a little bit more forward.

33
00:01:42.600 --> 00:01:45.500
Another way to think of this is as we're relating

34
00:01:45.500 --> 00:01:48.600
this the low Point low Point can be thinking thought

35
00:01:48.600 --> 00:01:51.400
of as width as well. In order to have the club head

36
00:01:51.400 --> 00:01:55.200
traveling downward through impact. I want

37
00:01:54.200 --> 00:01:57.600
to have the club working away from me as

38
00:01:57.600 --> 00:02:00.600
the club is working back up towards me. It's going

39
00:02:00.600 --> 00:02:03.400
to have a tendency to come away from the ground.

40
00:02:04.100 --> 00:02:07.200
So in order to have the club continually working away from

41
00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:10.800
me. I'm going to have the club reaching its widest

42
00:02:10.800 --> 00:02:11.400
point well.

43
00:02:12.200 --> 00:02:15.600
When this is hinged down like this that is nowhere near

44
00:02:15.600 --> 00:02:19.600
as wide as if I have the club further

45
00:02:18.600 --> 00:02:21.800
away from me like this. So if

46
00:02:21.800 --> 00:02:23.600
I think of let's say

47
00:02:24.500 --> 00:02:28.000
if I just think of this kind of ulnar deviation timing perhaps

48
00:02:27.500 --> 00:02:30.200
this is impact and as it's going through

49
00:02:30.200 --> 00:02:33.300
it's continuing to work away. If I was to bring my hands

50
00:02:33.300 --> 00:02:36.400
just straight across then what would happen is I'm not actually

51
00:02:36.400 --> 00:02:39.900
increasing that the club's not working away. It's just

52
00:02:39.900 --> 00:02:42.000
working across more like that.

53
00:02:43.100 --> 00:02:46.500
so I tie this together a lot with kind of an impact

54
00:02:46.500 --> 00:02:49.300
fixed type feel so more of a

55
00:02:49.300 --> 00:02:51.200
at-home visual where

56
00:02:52.100 --> 00:02:56.500
Getting into this kind of impact position where the

57
00:02:56.500 --> 00:02:59.000
hands have gone forward and that left arm is kind of

58
00:02:59.200 --> 00:03:02.700
gone more up that helps with getting the alignment of the the

59
00:03:02.700 --> 00:03:05.500
forearms to be a little bit more shallow. If it just goes

60
00:03:05.500 --> 00:03:08.200
across oftentimes this right arm gets really

61
00:03:08.200 --> 00:03:11.300
on top and I start getting into an impact position there.

62
00:03:11.300 --> 00:03:14.200
So that impact position is going

63
00:03:14.200 --> 00:03:17.800
to be more Diggy more more pull bias more tow bias.

64
00:03:17.800 --> 00:03:20.300
And actually what happens is when you're in that position

65
00:03:20.300 --> 00:03:23.100
and the club passes you'll look at

66
00:03:23.100 --> 00:03:26.900
video and you'll say wow. I don't really have any more shaft lean where

67
00:03:26.900 --> 00:03:29.900
if you're trying to get it up but staying down

68
00:03:29.900 --> 00:03:32.600
in your posture that kind of creates some

69
00:03:32.600 --> 00:03:35.500
of the slack to be able to get

70
00:03:35.500 --> 00:03:37.600
that shaft lean on impact, so

71
00:03:38.500 --> 00:03:41.400
Two-bit two major causes of creating Chef lien

72
00:03:41.400 --> 00:03:44.200
one is proper release hand motion and then

73
00:03:44.200 --> 00:03:47.500
two is kind of having your body in more of its

74
00:03:47.500 --> 00:03:50.200
impact line or or covering the ball.

75
00:03:50.200 --> 00:03:53.300
So if you're struggling with shaft lean, but your body is on top

76
00:03:53.300 --> 00:03:56.300
perhaps this will give you some ideas. You can work it into

77
00:03:56.300 --> 00:04:00.000
any of your nine to three or any of your follow-through drills.

78
00:03:59.600 --> 00:04:02.600
We're basically you're working on that

79
00:04:02.600 --> 00:04:05.900
feeling of up out and forward

80
00:04:05.900 --> 00:04:08.700
and that will help keep the arm extension longer

81
00:04:08.700 --> 00:04:11.500
into the follow through where this is going down. You

82
00:04:11.500 --> 00:04:14.500
will tend to pass the club a little bit quicker

83
00:04:14.500 --> 00:04:18.000
and you'll tend to have more of this narrow finish not ideal

84
00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:20.100
for controlling low point with your full swing.

85
00:04:21.100 --> 00:04:24.300
All right. So quick little demo. We'll do this as more of an impact fixed style.

86
00:04:24.300 --> 00:04:27.300
So I'm going to go impact or set up and then

87
00:04:27.300 --> 00:04:30.100
I'm going to go impact and now I'm going to freeze my

88
00:04:30.100 --> 00:04:33.200
body and impact and I'm going to try to make a swing

89
00:04:33.200 --> 00:04:36.700
getting back into that position. Now don't be discouraged. If

90
00:04:36.700 --> 00:04:39.500
you have trouble making contact from that preset. I

91
00:04:39.500 --> 00:04:42.800
actually usually have a lot of trouble getting back

92
00:04:42.800 --> 00:04:46.000
to that position if I start there so oftentimes

93
00:04:45.300 --> 00:04:48.100
what I'll do is here set up. This is

94
00:04:48.100 --> 00:04:51.700
where I want to get to an impact back to set up and then try to

95
00:04:51.700 --> 00:04:54.400
get back to their and that felt a little bit more

96
00:04:54.400 --> 00:04:57.700
kind of natural. So if you're really

97
00:04:57.700 --> 00:05:00.400
struggling with shaft lean more of

98
00:05:00.400 --> 00:05:03.500
a scoop style release don't just think hands forward

99
00:05:03.500 --> 00:05:06.400
think a little bit more hands up and

100
00:05:06.400 --> 00:05:09.400
out. That'll get the shaft feeling like it's more vertical but

101
00:05:09.400 --> 00:05:12.200
that more vertical shaft is really just widening the radius which

102
00:05:12.200 --> 00:05:13.600
helps you move the low point forward.
