The wipe move is the movement of the arms across the body during the release. It helps allow for side bend and is a sign that the golfer is applying force to the club in the right direction. To try this release drill make 9 to 3 swings with the upper body as far backward as you can and while getting the club to brush the ground as far forward as possible (with a good path).

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,000
The drill is hang back and brush. So this is a great kind of constraint led drill for
00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:13,000
working on your wipe technique. So a lot of people or a lot of golfers who struggle
00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:18,000
with the wipe also struggle with side bend. Those two usually go hand in hand. Because
00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:24,000
if my upper body tends to tilt back like so, if I was to just extend my arms out
00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:29,000
in front of my chest, that by itself would move the bottom of the swing well behind
00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:33,000
the golf ball. You can see that that's making contact with the ground well back here
00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:41,000
by my right foot. So the goal of hang back and brush forward is to get my upper body
00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:47,000
well behind. So kind of almost over my right foot more like a driver position. But then
00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:56,000
use my arms and use the wipe so that the club brushes the ground well ahead of the center
00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:02,000
of my stance. So almost as far up as my front foot if I can without getting the path
00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:07,000
way outside to in. Because it's very easy for some golfers to hang back kind of like
00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:14,000
so and then brush, go way outside and outside in in order to get the brush way forward.
00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:19,000
That's what we're not what we're trying to do. We're trying to brush from the inside
00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:24,000
but still getting it to brush forward by using that white movement of the arms working
00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:30,000
more across your body instead of straight out in front. So if you're practicing on the
00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:35,000
grass or having range, you just take the tee and draw the line in the ground like we do
00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:40,000
in the line drill or the advanced line drill. But if you're practicing inside, which I know
00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:46,000
a lot of our members do, you can take a towel and place it on the ground. And this way,
00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:51,000
if I let's set it up so that it's kind of pretty close to the middle of my stance. So now
00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:57,000
if I do this little brush drill, you can see I can get it to brush well ahead of the
00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:03,000
towel kind of like so. But if I didn't if I did that bad release, you could see that
00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:07,000
I would get some feedback because I may contact with the towel. So it just makes me a little
00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:14,000
bit more aware of the bottom of the swing or the kind of the contact point and the brush
00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:24,000
point. So you can do this either with 9 to 3 or working up to full swings. But what I
00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:30,000
would do to start is the 9 to 3 version where you can either preset the brush. So I'm going
00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:35,000
to get or sorry preset that upper body way behind. So I'm going to get almost driverish,
00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:42,000
get well behind, but then still try and kind of exaggerate both of these to get the bottom
00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:48,000
of the swing forward or what's actually more challenging is I'm going to start in a little
00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:53,000
bit more of a neutral or even leaning left pattern and then I'm going to try and fall back
00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:59,000
and kind of hang back while I use the arms to move the bottom of the swing forward. A lot
00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:03,000
of golfers who try and move the bottom of the swing forward will do so. More with their upper
00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:10,000
body kind of lunging forward like so. It's not what we're trying to do when we're working
00:03:10,000 --> 00:03:14,000
on the white. The not what we're trying to do when we're trying to work on this side
00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:20,000
bend. Those two go hand in hand and have a kind of high carry over for the longer clubs
00:03:20,000 --> 00:03:27,000
like the three wood the hybrids and especially the driver. So we'll give it a try and use
00:03:27,000 --> 00:03:32,000
the towel for a little bit of feedback. Okay, so to set up the drill, you'll give yourself
00:03:33,000 --> 00:03:40,000
about two inches or so between the towel and the golf ball. That just gives you a little bit
00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:46,000
of wiggle room because you'll see that the towel kind of sits up in places. It can make it a
00:03:46,000 --> 00:03:51,000
little bit more challenging and you want to get good feedback here. So now we're going to position
00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:57,000
the golf ball just ahead of where you would normally play your midiron. So in this case seven
00:03:58,000 --> 00:04:05,000
time, and then you're doing the nine to three kind of focusing on the white aspect of that
00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:13,000
release. So that first movement working a little bit more across your body instead of straight
00:04:13,000 --> 00:04:21,000
out there. So that first movement working more across just like so instead of straight down. So
00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:31,000
from the face on view hanging back but using the side bend move or sorry, using that side
00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:35,000
bend move to hang back but then using that white move in order to move the bottom of the swing
00:04:35,000 --> 00:04:40,000
forward. Your goal is to get it so that you can do it without hitting it off to the right,
00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:46,000
hitting it pretty straight and without hitting the towel even though you've got kind of a more
00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:52,000
forward ball position than you would normally play with a shorter iron. So I've got the towel
00:04:52,000 --> 00:04:56,000
a little bit on that one. Hopefully you get the the gist and the purpose of why you would use
00:04:56,000 --> 00:05:01,000
the towel when working on the white.
