High Low High

To create a flat spot, the handle needs to be moving up and in through the release. But at the same time, the grip is moving away from the body as the arms are lengthening. The only way to hit this combination of movements is to have the body bring the handle around as the arms are lengthening. For some golfers, this feels like less of a throwing action at the ball and more like swing motion through the ball.

But if that rhythm feel doesn't work for you, you can investigate the positions more. Learning to smooth out the grip reaching its lowest point around the right thigh can be a big breakthrough.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,000
This drill is high low high.

00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:13,000
So high low high is a build on the low to high release.

00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:16,000
So I would say that this is a more advanced concept.

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:21,000
This is definitely for kind of your mid upper single digit golfer is even down to your

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:25,000
scratch and competitive playing golfer.

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:29,000
For working on building more of this flat spot down at the bottom.

00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:36,000
In the low to high release drill, we basically get set up and then we're going to bring the

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:38,000
club down and out.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:43,000
So from this down the line, you'll see the goal is to exaggerate.

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:44,000
It's going down and out.

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:50,000
And then from here, the goal is then to use the body so that the grip is coming up

00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:53,000
and in as the club is going down and out.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:57,000
That creates more of this flat bottom of the swing.

00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:02,000
As opposed to if I was up here and I just released the club straight down more like

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:04,000
a wrecking ball.

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:09,000
So if I released and the grip and the club continue to go down, it would have a little

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:15,000
bit more of an abrupt change down at the bottom compared to if I have more of this low

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:22,000
and out to up and in, I'll feel the club really slide along the bottom of the ground and

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:25,000
have a nice little flat spot there.

00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:31,000
But then the challenge becomes when I go from the low to high to the tenda tour when

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:35,000
I start going from high to low to high.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:41,000
So the key in that is making sure that I'm getting the down and out more from the body

00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:48,000
and then continuing to use the body on the way through.

00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:53,000
So timing wise what usually happens is a lot of golfers who are more active with their

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:58,000
arms tend to release the club like this and you'll see that my chest stays more level

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:02,000
in the club and the hands go down into the golf ball.

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:08,000
Now granted you can make solid contact but it tends to be a little bit more inconsistent

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:12,000
or has a shorter window where the club is down on the ground.

00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:19,000
You'll tend to have steeper contact, kind of diggy divot where what a lot of better players

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:25,000
do is they use their body so that the club is getting down and out through here continue

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:32,000
to use the body so that when they do the release the club just slides along the ground.

00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:39,000
In order to do that the timing goes from kind of fast early to feeding through this

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:40,000
low to high.

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:48,000
It has a feeling of more of a swinging through the ball rather than hitting at the ball.

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:52,000
So I like to mix those two together so you're going to do some low to high where you

00:02:52,000 --> 00:03:01,000
just practice bringing the club out and down in and up.

00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:07,000
That's going to happen primarily from the pivot not from I don't want to see some artificial

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:09,000
kind of arm action like this.

00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:16,000
You'll notice my arms are actually extending as I'm going through and I can monitor the

00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:17,000
ball flight.

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:22,000
You'll be able to see from the down the line that even though the hands are coming

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:28,000
up and around the club head is going down and out so the ball is flying pretty straight

00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:29,000
fairly true.

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:31,000
I can even hit a draw that way.

00:03:31,000 --> 00:03:38,000
If you tend to have more of this arm tension or lack of owner deviation then you'll

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:46,000
tend to have more of a shot like this where both the club and the handle went up and left.

00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:54,000
Instead of being able to have that owner deviation and softness that allows the handle

00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:58,000
to come up and in but the club just still go out.

00:03:58,000 --> 00:04:04,000
Next we're going to try and add the speed coming from down through that position.

00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:06,000
So we're going to go just slightly above it.

00:04:06,000 --> 00:04:07,000
We're going to preset that.

00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:12,000
We're going to go just slightly above it and we're going to feel like the hand path

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:21,000
following the body is going to go out to in as the club is shallowing a little bit

00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:26,000
with that owner deviation so it's not quite following the exact same path.

00:04:26,000 --> 00:04:32,000
If I exaggerated it would be it will feel like the club is kind of going like that as the

00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:33,000
handle is going this way.

00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:40,000
So the club head will drop inside somewhere to that Zoro loop kind of feeling down there.

00:04:40,000 --> 00:04:45,000
So we're going to do one where we go just past the point.

00:04:45,000 --> 00:04:51,000
That was really good right there and that had a feeling like I accelerated through that

00:04:51,000 --> 00:04:55,000
transition of height of low before coming up high again.

00:04:55,000 --> 00:05:00,000
So it all blended instead of having more of this hit impulse.

00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:06,000
So like I said this is definitely a more advanced drill but this can be really powerful

00:05:06,000 --> 00:05:12,000
for good golfers especially if you struggle with a little bit more of a two way miss or

00:05:12,000 --> 00:05:15,000
with a with diggy contact.

00:05:15,000 --> 00:05:19,000
So work through lengthening the longer the swing.

00:05:19,000 --> 00:05:25,000
The longer the swing I'm going to have to kind of build that speed even a little bit more

00:05:25,000 --> 00:05:26,000
gradually.

00:05:26,000 --> 00:05:31,000
The longer the swing the more that if I go early the club is going to continue to have

00:05:31,000 --> 00:05:36,000
a trajectory going down or the grip is going to have a trajectory going down.

00:05:36,000 --> 00:05:41,000
As opposed to coming up the best place to look for that on video is from the face on view

00:05:41,000 --> 00:05:47,000
where if you look at it from this here if you draw a line at the top of the hands you'll

00:05:47,000 --> 00:05:52,000
either see the club going down through there or you'll see the grip.

00:05:52,000 --> 00:05:55,000
So they close to the same height.

00:05:55,000 --> 00:06:00,000
A rough guide is having the club somewhere around mid thigh from that face on view if the

00:06:00,000 --> 00:06:04,000
camera is set at a good height where if you're more high to low it will be more at about

00:06:04,000 --> 00:06:05,000
hip height.

00:06:05,000 --> 00:06:13,000
So on a fuller swing high to low so the one I'm trying to work out of would be more

00:06:13,000 --> 00:06:14,000
like that.

00:06:14,000 --> 00:06:21,000
Again hit it pretty solid little thin but won't have the same flat spot and feeling

00:06:21,000 --> 00:06:28,000
down at the bottom as this one where I felt like I got my hands really low and then the

00:06:28,000 --> 00:06:32,000
speed was much later through the ball and the ball just feels like it jumps as opposed

00:06:32,000 --> 00:06:34,000
to being struck.

00:06:34,000 --> 00:06:40,000
So if you're struggling with this height or the low to high component of the release

00:06:40,000 --> 00:06:47,000
then mix in some real gradual high low high to work on that timing of the blend from

00:06:47,000 --> 00:06:52,000
using the body kind of through this corner and into that really powerful follow through

00:06:52,000 --> 00:06:53,000
position.

00:06:53,000 --> 00:06:56,000
Alright let's do a little demo of the three balls we're going to hit.

00:06:56,000 --> 00:07:03,000
So low to high it's not the club is not going to go above waist height because I'm going

00:07:03,000 --> 00:07:09,000
down and out to up and in there's no going above the lowest point.

00:07:09,000 --> 00:07:16,000
Next one I'm going to go slightly above that point so it's going to go I'm going to

00:07:16,000 --> 00:07:21,000
feel that going down and then back up and then the last one is going to be a full swing

00:07:21,000 --> 00:07:28,000
where I'm going to feel blending through that position with a lot of speed.

00:07:28,000 --> 00:07:33,000
Kind of like that.
