Impact Bag - Outside Lead Foot

An impact bag can be a great tool for players to better understand how they are moving in space. For this drill, I will place the impact bag outside of the lead foot and ask players to:

  1. Brush the ground.
  2. Strike the low side of the impact bag.
  3. Keep the hands and clubhead in line (or vertical).

These (3) checkpoints will require players to properly tie together the pivot and sequencing of the arms. Players who struggle with accomplishing this may have more of a "flip" or "chicken-wing" style release. If you fall into this category, re-visiting drills such as the "grip throws" or "merry-go-round" can be a good place to start.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This drill is impact bag outside of lead foot.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So not a huge fan of using the impact bag in the traditional way of kind of putting it

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:14,000
there and just kind of smacking it for the sake of feeling some shaft lean.

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:18,000
But I do like to use it to stop the club to help your brain figure out what you might

00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:19,000
be doing in space.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:24,000
So my impact bag is seen better days.

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:26,000
We're going to use an object.

00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:27,000
You can use a pillow.

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:34,000
I'm going to use the impact bag to help uncover what might be going on down to impact.

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:38,000
So I'm going to do this off-grass, but you can do this on carpet.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:39,000
You can do this off-mats.

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:42,000
You can do this striking ball or not striking ball.

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:47,000
I'm going to kind of identify where ball position would be.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:49,000
So somewhere right around here.

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:56,000
And then I'm going to try to brush the ground roughly where that ball position would be.

00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:02,000
And then I'm going to try and strike the impact bag that is just outside my left foot.

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:06,000
And my goal is to have my hands and the club head in line.

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:08,000
So basically vertical.

00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:12,000
This is to help with golfers you have a tendency of getting low to high.

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:15,000
You would say I would hit it very high up on the impact bag.

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:21,000
And my hands would be well behind where the club is at that point after impact.

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:25,000
The other option would be golfers you have a little bit more of a scoop.

00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:29,000
And chicken wing, I would hit it high on the impact bag.

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:33,000
I might not even hit the ground and my hands would definitely be behind.

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:39,000
So in order to accomplish the two goals of or actually the three goals, brushing the

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:46,000
ground, striking it low on the impact bag with my hands even with the club head, I have

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:53,000
to do a decent job of getting my hands in front, maintaining that leg, keeping my chest

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:57,000
in a good merry-go-round position or getting my body into a good impact position.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:02,000
It kind of ties together a few things relating to both the pivot and the sequence of the

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:03,000
arms.

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:10,000
For me, in order to do this correctly, it feels like I'm throwing my arms out in that direction

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
such as the grip throws or the single arm throws or any of those drills.

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:21,000
But for you, by doing this, you may develop your own unique feel.

00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:24,000
All that's important is that you take that feel and then we're going to try to apply it

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:26,000
with a golf ball.

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:31,000
So first, I'm going to do the trickier version, which is just kind of a tap drill.

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:37,000
I'm going to try and strike the ground and just tap the impact bag like I was doing right

00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:38,000
there.

00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:43,000
The goal on this is not to make the impact bag topple over and make it go flying.

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:52,000
If anything, I'm almost kind of decelerating in the impact because of the limited amount

00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:53,000
of grip pressures.

00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:58,000
So basically, I don't want to feel like I'm really squeezing my arms and tensing my

00:02:58,000 --> 00:02:59,000
shoulders.

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:03,000
I'm going to feel more like they're getting pulled away by the weight of the club.

00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:10,000
And in order to do that, I'm not using my body for the bracing and the power transfer

00:03:10,000 --> 00:03:11,000
the way that I would normally.

00:03:11,000 --> 00:03:18,000
So the club is actually going to be moving fairly slow when it strikes the impact bag.

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:27,000
So now, again, I'm going to try and brush the ground and strike the impact bag low

00:03:27,000 --> 00:03:35,000
towards the bottom of the impact bag with my hands relatively even with the club head

00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:37,000
when I make contact.

00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:39,000
Once I have a feeling of that, I'm a big fan of baby steps.

00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:44,000
And now I'm just going to move the impact bag so that I won't make contact with it.

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:50,000
And then I'm going to try and basically duplicate that same feel.

00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:55,000
Once I have a few of these little baby step drills, then I can move up into a little

00:03:55,000 --> 00:03:56,000
bit bigger.

00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:02,000
Then I might be able to move into more of a continuous 9 to 3.

00:04:02,000 --> 00:04:07,000
And then once I feel like I've accomplished the goal with my 9 to 3, I'm going to move

00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:11,000
up to my 10 to 2 and into full swings.

00:04:11,000 --> 00:04:17,000
And now when I start to do it with a little bit more speed and body, I'm going to start

00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:22,000
to hit the ground hard enough that I've probably taken a divot where in the slow motion

00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:27,000
swings it's unlikely even if I'm having a leading edge strike unless the ground is really

00:04:27,000 --> 00:04:28,000
soft.

00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:29,000
I'm probably not going to take a divot.

00:04:29,000 --> 00:04:34,000
So this is great for golfers who have more of a scoop early release and you struggle

00:04:34,000 --> 00:04:39,000
with more of the clubbed going low to eye high or bottoming out behind the golf ball.

00:04:39,000 --> 00:04:43,000
So if you have trouble taking divots or you're more of a picker of a golf ball, this

00:04:43,000 --> 00:04:49,000
is a great way to get a sense of the handle getting ahead of the club head down through

00:04:49,000 --> 00:04:50,000
impact.

00:04:50,000 --> 00:04:56,000
One of the key skills for striking the ball in the center of the club from having good sequencing,

00:04:56,000 --> 00:04:57,000
good body position and good chef lean.
