Videos pop up from time to time trying to relate other sports to golf. One of the most common is to see a Frisbee throw compared to the movements of the lead arm. In this video, I discuss and demonstrate why good golf makes suboptimal Frisbee. That being said, I think practicing other sports, like Disc Golf can be great for training the precision of the pattern in the brain.

00:00:00.030 --> 00:00:02.580
in this calls for insight we're gonna
00:00:02.580 --> 00:00:03.840
take a look at what we can learn about
00:00:03.840 --> 00:00:05.279
the golf swing from throwing a frisbee
00:00:05.279 --> 00:00:08.490
so I've seen a a handful you know three
00:00:08.490 --> 00:00:11.370
different instructors present videos
00:00:11.370 --> 00:00:13.769
about throwing frisbees and how you can
00:00:13.769 --> 00:00:15.150
learn some key things about the golf
00:00:15.150 --> 00:00:16.109
swing you know if you're if you're
00:00:16.109 --> 00:00:18.240
learning to throw them left-handed I've
00:00:18.240 --> 00:00:20.369
seen everything from you can learn how
00:00:20.369 --> 00:00:22.890
to bow that left wrist and then extend
00:00:22.890 --> 00:00:25.189
it through the shot you can learn about
00:00:25.189 --> 00:00:27.390
sequencing and kind of spinning that
00:00:27.390 --> 00:00:30.539
body as their main power source lots of
00:00:30.539 --> 00:00:33.180
different things now one of my one of my
00:00:33.180 --> 00:00:35.880
other sports you know handful years ago
00:00:35.880 --> 00:00:39.059
before my injury I used to play not
00:00:39.059 --> 00:00:40.950
professional but competitive disc golf
00:00:40.950 --> 00:00:43.230
so with my mind I would I would study
00:00:43.230 --> 00:00:46.289
you know looking at I had my Casio and I
00:00:46.289 --> 00:00:48.210
would take high-speed video of the good
00:00:48.210 --> 00:00:50.760
players in the area I would study it
00:00:50.760 --> 00:00:51.930
just like I was studying the golf swing
00:00:51.930 --> 00:00:55.890
so I want to I want to dissuade a couple
00:00:55.890 --> 00:00:58.170
kind of myths because I think that what
00:00:58.170 --> 00:01:00.090
they usually say about how you apply it
00:01:00.090 --> 00:01:01.710
to the golf swing is a hundred percent
00:01:01.710 --> 00:01:03.780
you know if you bow that lead wrist
00:01:03.780 --> 00:01:06.659
early if you sequence it and then down
00:01:06.659 --> 00:01:08.400
at the bottom we'll talk about this in
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:10.049
the golf section but if you let that
00:01:10.049 --> 00:01:12.720
lead wrist come out of flexion that's
00:01:12.720 --> 00:01:14.700
gonna tend to produce some really good
00:01:14.700 --> 00:01:17.100
contact really good flight good spin
00:01:17.100 --> 00:01:20.580
loft a lot of good things the way that
00:01:20.580 --> 00:01:23.820
they describe it in the frisbee throw I
00:01:23.820 --> 00:01:25.500
think is a little bit reaching it's
00:01:25.500 --> 00:01:27.299
almost like retrofitting what we want in
00:01:27.299 --> 00:01:28.799
the golf swing to make it look like it
00:01:28.799 --> 00:01:32.430
should happen in disc golf I had some
00:01:32.430 --> 00:01:34.710
struggles because I knew how to create
00:01:34.710 --> 00:01:37.560
rotational speed I knew this good wrist
00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:38.700
mechanics from the golf swing and
00:01:38.700 --> 00:01:40.619
initially I struggled a little bit with
00:01:40.619 --> 00:01:42.810
certain shots when it came to disc golf
00:01:42.810 --> 00:01:44.189
because I was trying to apply those same
00:01:44.189 --> 00:01:46.920
principles so I'm gonna use a couple of
00:01:46.920 --> 00:01:49.860
my mid-range mid-range discs those are
00:01:49.860 --> 00:01:51.630
most like kind of your neighborhood
00:01:51.630 --> 00:01:53.009
ultimate frisbees
00:01:53.009 --> 00:01:55.140
but disc golf discs tend to have more of
00:01:55.140 --> 00:01:58.020
the weighting out around the rim less in
00:01:58.020 --> 00:01:59.159
the middle so you can throw and further
00:01:59.159 --> 00:02:00.960
these guys tend to be closer and then
00:02:00.960 --> 00:02:03.509
we'll look at some driver throws so one
00:02:03.509 --> 00:02:05.549
of the things that I frequently hear is
00:02:05.549 --> 00:02:08.670
that you're going to flex that wrist and
00:02:08.670 --> 00:02:10.470
you're basically going to spin your body
00:02:10.470 --> 00:02:12.989
and then you're gonna extend it kind of
00:02:12.989 --> 00:02:13.980
like so
00:02:13.980 --> 00:02:16.950
now if I was to actually do that what
00:02:16.950 --> 00:02:19.200
you'll see is I'm gonna flex and I'm
00:02:19.200 --> 00:02:21.540
gonna spin and I'm gonna throw and that
00:02:21.540 --> 00:02:23.459
actually you know it works it doesn't
00:02:23.459 --> 00:02:26.250
look that bad but if you're if you get a
00:02:26.250 --> 00:02:27.810
trained eye you'll kind of see that it
00:02:27.810 --> 00:02:30.090
stalled out and it didn't really cut
00:02:30.090 --> 00:02:33.269
through the air very well now to throw a
00:02:33.269 --> 00:02:35.010
good frisbee disc what I'm actually
00:02:35.010 --> 00:02:36.330
going to do is I'm gonna try to keep my
00:02:36.330 --> 00:02:38.489
wrists in neutral position but I'm gonna
00:02:38.489 --> 00:02:41.879
try and pull this across my body so I'm
00:02:41.879 --> 00:02:43.290
not gonna spin my body I'm actually
00:02:43.290 --> 00:02:45.209
gonna feel like my body stays pretty
00:02:45.209 --> 00:02:47.489
Square to the target line and I'm gonna
00:02:47.489 --> 00:02:49.170
use more of almost like starting a lawn
00:02:49.170 --> 00:02:51.989
mower and trying to get this this to go
00:02:51.989 --> 00:02:55.140
in a straight line straight across my
00:02:55.140 --> 00:02:56.700
body towards the target so what ends up
00:02:56.700 --> 00:02:58.049
happening is I'm going to keep this
00:02:58.049 --> 00:03:00.180
wrist pretty firm and then once my
00:03:00.180 --> 00:03:02.190
shoulder and elbow run out of room and
00:03:02.190 --> 00:03:04.260
now it's gonna flex very close to the
00:03:04.260 --> 00:03:06.569
release point and then as I go to extend
00:03:06.569 --> 00:03:08.190
it's going to approach neutral it's
00:03:08.190 --> 00:03:09.690
never really going to get into extension
00:03:09.690 --> 00:03:12.150
it's just gonna approach neutral and by
00:03:12.150 --> 00:03:16.160
doing so I get this much later
00:03:16.160 --> 00:03:18.239
acceleration of the disc and I'm able to
00:03:18.239 --> 00:03:20.430
create a lot more spin compared to if I
00:03:20.430 --> 00:03:23.190
had it bent like this I'm gonna tend to
00:03:23.190 --> 00:03:24.750
run out of room sooner so I'm actually
00:03:24.750 --> 00:03:27.599
gonna start unwinding too soon which is
00:03:27.599 --> 00:03:30.540
gonna impede my ability to put spin so
00:03:30.540 --> 00:03:32.790
now if I just kind of am casually
00:03:32.790 --> 00:03:34.380
playing catch but I do it in more of
00:03:34.380 --> 00:03:38.609
this disc golf method you'll see that
00:03:38.609 --> 00:03:41.099
the the disc it's still gonna kind of
00:03:41.099 --> 00:03:42.690
fall out of the sky that way because I
00:03:42.690 --> 00:03:44.849
left it a little bit on edge but you see
00:03:44.849 --> 00:03:47.060
how the disc cuts through the air now
00:03:47.060 --> 00:03:49.169
they always use the example of just
00:03:49.169 --> 00:03:51.389
throwing a neighborhood frisbee but I
00:03:51.389 --> 00:03:53.310
want to show that it'll get exaggerated
00:03:53.310 --> 00:03:56.069
when you take a heavier disc with the
00:03:56.069 --> 00:03:57.780
weighting more around the perimeter like
00:03:57.780 --> 00:04:01.620
we use in disc golf so for example I'm
00:04:01.620 --> 00:04:02.910
going to take this disc right here and
00:04:02.910 --> 00:04:04.709
use the method that they're frequently
00:04:04.709 --> 00:04:05.849
talking about which is I'm going to cup
00:04:05.849 --> 00:04:09.260
that wrist and just spin my body and
00:04:09.260 --> 00:04:11.699
release it kind of like this and you'll
00:04:11.699 --> 00:04:14.970
see that it has you know a decent flight
00:04:14.970 --> 00:04:18.299
to it but I want you to compare if I
00:04:18.299 --> 00:04:21.150
spin more to create that speed it's just
00:04:21.150 --> 00:04:23.789
going to go up in stall compare that to
00:04:23.789 --> 00:04:26.520
a more traditional kind of actual disc
00:04:26.520 --> 00:04:29.000
golf Drive
00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:32.010
we're all the speed is happening late
00:04:32.010 --> 00:04:34.139
and you'll see that that's gonna
00:04:34.139 --> 00:04:36.090
probably go fifty feet further which is
00:04:36.090 --> 00:04:37.950
very significant for this fifty feet
00:04:37.950 --> 00:04:40.530
further than what I just did with just
00:04:40.530 --> 00:04:42.660
the the body spinning as my main power
00:04:42.660 --> 00:04:44.580
source I remember talking to a
00:04:44.580 --> 00:04:46.530
competitive disc golfer who had just
00:04:46.530 --> 00:04:48.870
come back from World and this was the
00:04:48.870 --> 00:04:51.300
area that was sore for him not his core
00:04:51.300 --> 00:04:51.960
in his hips
00:04:51.960 --> 00:04:55.380
it's that pull where we get a lot of our
00:04:55.380 --> 00:05:00.510
power in a good disc golf drive so I
00:05:00.510 --> 00:05:02.550
pulled that a little bit but that's more
00:05:02.550 --> 00:05:03.810
of the flight that we're kind of going
00:05:03.810 --> 00:05:06.060
for and you can't get that flight if
00:05:06.060 --> 00:05:08.550
you're bowing this wrist too soon or if
00:05:08.550 --> 00:05:09.690
you're spinning your body you have to
00:05:09.690 --> 00:05:11.880
pull across your body to keep that wrist
00:05:11.880 --> 00:05:14.160
neutral now let's take a look at what we
00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:16.770
can learn about the golf swing from
00:05:16.770 --> 00:05:20.640
looking at these disc golf mechanics all
00:05:20.640 --> 00:05:22.800
right so we just finished looking at how
00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:25.110
the wrist actually works when we're
00:05:25.110 --> 00:05:26.669
trying to do a really good distance
00:05:26.669 --> 00:05:28.530
drive where it's not really gonna be
00:05:28.530 --> 00:05:31.169
cupped in maximum flexion and then going
00:05:31.169 --> 00:05:32.580
to extension because that actually calls
00:05:32.580 --> 00:05:35.940
causes the disc to lose speed and kind
00:05:35.940 --> 00:05:38.100
of spin out of its of its flight
00:05:38.100 --> 00:05:40.080
prematurely we're gonna actually hold
00:05:40.080 --> 00:05:42.180
that fairly rigid and it's not going to
00:05:42.180 --> 00:05:44.850
go into flexion until late in this swing
00:05:44.850 --> 00:05:48.410
and then it's gonna work more towards
00:05:48.410 --> 00:05:50.789
neutral it's not really gonna snap into
00:05:50.789 --> 00:05:52.770
extension it's just gonna work towards
00:05:52.770 --> 00:05:54.570
neutral as it goes through kind of that
00:05:54.570 --> 00:05:57.000
release phase so how does that apply to
00:05:57.000 --> 00:05:59.070
the golf swing well there are two key
00:05:59.070 --> 00:06:01.289
times during the golf swing where this
00:06:01.289 --> 00:06:03.090
lead risk they're gonna is going to be
00:06:03.090 --> 00:06:06.300
really changing its movement pattern one
00:06:06.300 --> 00:06:09.810
is gonna be as we're starting down what
00:06:09.810 --> 00:06:12.090
I refer to as a motorcycle where the
00:06:12.090 --> 00:06:14.850
weight of the club similar to the the
00:06:14.850 --> 00:06:18.660
pull from the arm is going to cause this
00:06:18.660 --> 00:06:22.830
wrist to go in towards flexion I find
00:06:22.830 --> 00:06:25.560
that when a new golfer or when a golfer
00:06:25.560 --> 00:06:27.750
who has been stuck in this extension
00:06:27.750 --> 00:06:30.330
pattern is trying to get this a little
00:06:30.330 --> 00:06:32.130
bit better body pivot a little bit
00:06:32.130 --> 00:06:34.710
better sequencing it's it's normal to
00:06:34.710 --> 00:06:37.349
have to force the flexion early on but
00:06:37.349 --> 00:06:40.080
ultimately that flexion should come as a
00:06:40.080 --> 00:06:41.190
passive movement
00:06:41.190 --> 00:06:43.950
what the body is doing the second time
00:06:43.950 --> 00:06:45.360
is the one that I think is the least
00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:47.850
discussed which would be down in the
00:06:47.850 --> 00:06:50.760
impact zone so we look on 3d and we can
00:06:50.760 --> 00:06:52.920
see that the wrist is going in towards
00:06:52.920 --> 00:06:55.770
extension well similar to that frisbee
00:06:55.770 --> 00:06:58.500
throw when I'm throwing a drive in
00:06:58.500 --> 00:07:01.320
frisbee I'm not ever thinking about
00:07:01.320 --> 00:07:04.080
trying to unhinge or release this wrist
00:07:04.080 --> 00:07:06.540
what ends up happening is I run out of
00:07:06.540 --> 00:07:08.460
room in my arm in my shoulder in my
00:07:08.460 --> 00:07:10.440
elbow is working away from my wrist and
00:07:10.440 --> 00:07:13.050
that causes it to come out of that Flex
00:07:13.050 --> 00:07:15.270
position similar thing is happening in
00:07:15.270 --> 00:07:18.420
golf so as I've gotten down into this
00:07:18.420 --> 00:07:21.000
really good delivery position what'll
00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:23.730
happen is as the body is bracing my
00:07:23.730 --> 00:07:26.280
wrist is slightly flexed I'm
00:07:26.280 --> 00:07:27.780
exaggerating it for the purpose here and
00:07:27.780 --> 00:07:30.120
the weight of the club is back here so
00:07:30.120 --> 00:07:31.740
it's kind of pulling against my wrist
00:07:31.740 --> 00:07:35.520
this way but then what happens is it's
00:07:35.520 --> 00:07:37.560
got a lot of momentum so it wants to
00:07:37.560 --> 00:07:40.320
pull my wrist this way and this elbow is
00:07:40.320 --> 00:07:42.330
getting pulled from the shoulder so I'm
00:07:42.330 --> 00:07:44.820
getting my form getting pulled this way
00:07:44.820 --> 00:07:46.800
and my hand getting pulled that way it
00:07:46.800 --> 00:07:49.800
would take a massive effort to prevent
00:07:49.800 --> 00:07:52.350
any of this extension but that doesn't
00:07:52.350 --> 00:07:54.870
mean that adding active extension down
00:07:54.870 --> 00:07:57.120
at the bottom is going to increase my
00:07:57.120 --> 00:07:59.640
club head speed in fact I would guess
00:07:59.640 --> 00:08:01.380
they would probably do the opposite
00:08:01.380 --> 00:08:03.780
because by resisting it you're actually
00:08:03.780 --> 00:08:05.430
going to get more of a stretch shortened
00:08:05.430 --> 00:08:08.250
in the extensors of the wrist where if
00:08:08.250 --> 00:08:09.710
you're actively do it it would just be a
00:08:09.710 --> 00:08:12.540
concentric or active movement so
00:08:12.540 --> 00:08:14.090
hopefully this helps you see and
00:08:14.090 --> 00:08:18.270
understand how these two key wrists
00:08:18.270 --> 00:08:21.180
phases can actually relate to what we do
00:08:21.180 --> 00:08:24.900
with the disc golf but the the disc golf
00:08:24.900 --> 00:08:26.730
is not going to reveal that we want to
00:08:26.730 --> 00:08:29.610
have kind of Mexican extension spin from
00:08:29.610 --> 00:08:32.520
the body and then or sorry max flexion
00:08:32.520 --> 00:08:34.080
spin from the body and then extend that
00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:36.380
wrist through impact
00:08:36.380 --> 00:08:39.030
that's not what's happening just like in
00:08:39.030 --> 00:08:41.430
the golf swing I'm not going to be
00:08:41.430 --> 00:08:43.770
actively extending that wrist down
00:08:43.770 --> 00:08:46.110
through impact it's more gonna be a
00:08:46.110 --> 00:08:48.270
product of these two competing forces
00:08:48.270 --> 00:08:50.280
the mat the momentum of the club pulling
00:08:50.280 --> 00:08:52.740
me away as my shoulder pulls from the
00:08:52.740 --> 00:08:54.810
opposite end causing everything to want
00:08:54.810 --> 00:08:55.140
to
00:08:55.140 --> 00:08:57.990
line up so if you like the way we break
00:08:57.990 --> 00:09:00.840
down how frisbee golf can be relate to
00:09:00.840 --> 00:09:02.640
the golf swing you'll love how we break
00:09:02.640 --> 00:09:04.200
down the different phases of how to
00:09:04.200 --> 00:09:06.090
train your golf swing at golf smart
00:09:06.090 --> 00:09:08.510
