Isolated Ulnar Deviation

In this video, we look at how ulnar deviation is a key piece of the release. It typically starts to happen around shaft parallel to the ground in the downswing and finishes at follow through position. This uncocking of the wrists shallows out the path of the club and opens the face, and makes it easier for the arms to naturally rotate through impact. If you are struggling with getting width in the follow through and keeping those arms extending through the shot, this may be a missing peice for you. Just know that if you do this and the ball goes off to the right, then it let's you know that you are using rehinging to close the face, and have to add more motorcycle or shaft rotation instead.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
This release drill is isolating owner.

00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So, owner deviation is the unhinged part of the release, and sometimes it can get lost in

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:15,000
the mix, but it's a critical piece for having that good extension on the way through,

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:23,000
because what you'll see is if I hinge, which is radial deviation, if I just don't fully

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:28,000
unhing, and what'll happen is it'll have a much more narrow look on this follow-through.

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:32,000
This can be much more important for driving.

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:36,000
You'll see for a Macaroid Jason Day, Jim Furik.

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:43,000
Lots of really good drivers, the golf ball, who have this kind of late, wide, long look to it.

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:48,000
Where that comes from is isolating this owner deviation.

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:53,000
One of the benefits that isolating that owner deviation is as the club gets kind of inline.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:01:01,000
Now there's very little resistance to letting the club rotate, which also keeps my arms moving.

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:04,000
Further away from me and gets that good extension on the way through.

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:09,000
So what we'll do is we'll do nine to three drills, and we're going to isolate this

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:12,000
owner deviation and talk about the timing of it.

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:18,000
So from a face-on perspective, if I'm doing a nine to three, so I'm getting into this position,

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:25,000
one of the first movements is going to be that kind of owner deviation before that rotation

00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:28,000
happens secondary through the ball.

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:34,000
So this owner deviation, and you'll notice it's not a cast movement, so I'm not flexing

00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:38,000
my wrist and I'm not straightening that right tricep.

00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:43,000
I'm just lowering the club down towards the ground kind of like this.

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:47,000
Now when I do that, what I would do in the actual swing is I would accompany that with

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:54,000
body rotation so that instead of it ending up here behind the golf ball, the move will

00:01:54,000 --> 00:01:57,000
finish here pointing at the target.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:02,000
So from the down the line view, what you'll see is if I'm in this waist height and I have

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:08,000
a tendency to see the club kind of get out there, that could be an okay body movement,

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:15,000
kind of almost everything except for if I did that again, but now I add that owner deviation,

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:20,000
you can see that now the club is tracking one or more shallow path.

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:25,000
So this is one of the big shallower, it gets the club away from you, it gets the club kind

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:29,000
of down low, allows for side bend and rotation through the ball.

00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:35,000
This can be a key missing piece to a lot of players releases, because what they'll tend to

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:39,000
do is they'll want to kind of hold this the hands pretty much firm and pretty much in the

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:44,000
exact same position, and then the club will get too high, and so what I'll have to do is I'll

00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:49,000
have to use my shoulders to get the club down towards the golf ball, but you can see that

00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:54,000
that's going to mess up some of the bottom of my swing and ultimately that path.

00:02:54,000 --> 00:03:00,000
So especially if you get into a very good delivery position, but then you still struggle

00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:05,000
with kind of scooping the ball, having a little bit of that chicken wing on the way through,

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:09,000
what it usually means is I'm not doing any of this owner deviation.

00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:16,000
So what we'll do now is we'll hit a couple where we focus on

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:23,000
I'm basically going to feel this owner deviate, and I'm just going to allow my body to rotate

00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:28,000
while I'm finishing that move, and you'll see that a checkpoint will basically be in this follow

00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:32,000
through if the club is slightly below my hands and kind of wide away from me.

00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:38,000
You can't hit balls this way, but one way to kind of exaggerate that feeling is if I were to

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:45,000
choke up on the club here, I'm now in that delivery position. If I keep that owner deviation

00:03:45,000 --> 00:03:49,000
or I fully owner deviate, you'll see that I'll get the club pretty close to my left forearm.

00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:56,000
So if you're struggling with getting extension on the way through, it could simply be not having

00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:01,000
enough of this owner deviation during the release. And the timing of when that should happen

00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:07,000
is kind of down right around in here is when it starts, and it's basically going to finish

00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:13,000
when you're fully extended kind of right somewhere in this zone here, kind of in that follow through.

00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:20,000
The alternative, again, from the face on view, would be if I get to about here, and I don't

00:04:20,000 --> 00:04:24,000
owner deviate, then I have to get the club down to the ground one of these other ways, and I'll tend

00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:31,000
to release the club more like this, and you can see that that's going to affect the path, the amount

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:35,000
of loft, the low point, the wide point, all the important parameters that we're trying to build with

00:04:35,000 --> 00:04:41,000
this good release. So get that early, older deviation, and that'll allow you to get more extension

00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:45,000
on the way through.
