Jazzy Jeff Follow Through

The chicken wing, or lead arm bending motion, is really only a problem when it happens through impact. But for some golfers training the lead arm to stay straight is easier to do after impact rather than through it. One of the ideas that helps train the lead arm from bending is using external rotation of the shoulder from follow through to finish. This is a shallowing action of the arm and compliments a steeper body action. So the lead arm jazzy jeff move helps support body rotation.

1
00:00:05.300 --> 00:00:08.900
This drill is the Jazzy Jeff follow through. So the

2
00:00:08.900 --> 00:00:11.000
Jazzy Jeff move is one of

3
00:00:11.300 --> 00:00:14.300
the descriptions I used for or I still

4
00:00:14.300 --> 00:00:17.200
use for going into external rotation. I

5
00:00:17.200 --> 00:00:20.100
primarily use it for the backswing because a lot

6
00:00:20.100 --> 00:00:23.900
of golfers tend to get more this elbow going into internal rotation

7
00:00:23.900 --> 00:00:26.900
stuck behind pointing perpendicular to

8
00:00:26.900 --> 00:00:29.200
the spine up at the top of the Swing kind of has a

9
00:00:29.200 --> 00:00:32.300
look more like this and that can encourage some

10
00:00:32.300 --> 00:00:35.000
Steep and some arm dominant patterns that tend to cause

11
00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:38.600
a lot of contact and consistency problems. So the

12
00:00:38.600 --> 00:00:41.300
Jazzy Jeff movement pays homage to The Fresh

13
00:00:41.300 --> 00:00:45.800
Prince of Bel-Air where he and his buddy who would have the Jazzy

14
00:00:44.800 --> 00:00:47.400
Jeff kind of handshake where they

15
00:00:47.400 --> 00:00:50.600
go and then and that movement there of

16
00:00:50.600 --> 00:00:53.600
that external rotation where the trail arm stays in front

17
00:00:53.600 --> 00:00:56.300
of the chest and all the movement is

18
00:00:56.300 --> 00:00:59.800
happening by going into this external rotation is similar

19
00:00:59.800 --> 00:01:01.900
to what we're trying to do in the backswing.

20
00:01:02.700 --> 00:01:05.200
Well for some golfers, it can be helpful to

21
00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:09.100
mirror that in the finish. So a number

22
00:01:08.100 --> 00:01:11.600
of golfers who have more of a chicken wing pattern

23
00:01:11.600 --> 00:01:14.100
will tend to pull this

24
00:01:14.100 --> 00:01:17.700
arm behind and the elbow will be pointing way

25
00:01:17.700 --> 00:01:20.900
up just like this. So as they come through it's

26
00:01:20.900 --> 00:01:23.800
often a company with a little bit of arms behind

27
00:01:23.800 --> 00:01:26.500
in Steep. And so then they pull those

28
00:01:26.500 --> 00:01:29.400
arms around their body and that causes

29
00:01:29.400 --> 00:01:32.400
the club to be coming up on the golf ball. You can struggle with top

30
00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:35.500
shots. You can struggle with thin shots. You can struggle with pulls you

31
00:01:35.500 --> 00:01:38.100
can struggle with toe shots. That's a common

32
00:01:38.100 --> 00:01:41.600
pattern of having too much of this arm pull in the follow through

33
00:01:42.400 --> 00:01:45.300
And so what we're going to do in the Jazzy Jeff

34
00:01:45.300 --> 00:01:48.100
follow through is basically we're going to

35
00:01:48.100 --> 00:01:51.100
get our arm into this follow-through position.

36
00:01:51.100 --> 00:01:54.600
And then from here, we're going to try to keep the elbow

37
00:01:54.600 --> 00:01:57.800
in front of our body and we're going to do that Jazzy Jeff

38
00:01:57.800 --> 00:02:00.100
movement. Now, you'll see that naturally I do

39
00:02:00.100 --> 00:02:03.900
more in my trail arm than my lead. So it's not going to look quite as

40
00:02:03.900 --> 00:02:06.000
dramatic, but I'm trying to feel

41
00:02:06.900 --> 00:02:10.200
a little bit of this movement here where the

42
00:02:09.200 --> 00:02:12.600
arm is actually rotating past

43
00:02:12.600 --> 00:02:15.400
my body kind of like this the key place to

44
00:02:15.400 --> 00:02:18.100
see this is from the down the line view what you'll see

45
00:02:18.100 --> 00:02:21.200
is as I do that Jazzy Jeff move the

46
00:02:21.200 --> 00:02:24.300
arm will tend to stay straight and up as opposed

47
00:02:24.300 --> 00:02:27.500
to being bent or coming way down. So if

48
00:02:27.500 --> 00:02:30.100
you are looking from that down the line View and

49
00:02:30.100 --> 00:02:34.000
you see either this narrow here or this kind

50
00:02:33.500 --> 00:02:36.900
of coming behind and pointing way down. Then

51
00:02:36.900 --> 00:02:39.400
you might be a candidate for working on this follow-through position.

52
00:02:39.400 --> 00:02:42.300
It really helps create more of a body

53
00:02:42.300 --> 00:02:45.300
driven finish because the arms aren't pulling

54
00:02:45.300 --> 00:02:48.100
around you're gonna have to use turn your hips and your chest

55
00:02:48.100 --> 00:02:51.100
to bring the club all the way around. Okay. So let's jump into the

56
00:02:51.100 --> 00:02:54.500
demo one of the big Keys here is the timing of

57
00:02:54.500 --> 00:02:57.300
the movement so we know that we want

58
00:02:57.300 --> 00:03:00.300
that kind of Mo Norman position on the way through

59
00:03:00.300 --> 00:03:03.400
where we want the the elbow in a little

60
00:03:03.400 --> 00:03:06.400
bit more of internal rotation as we're

61
00:03:06.400 --> 00:03:06.700
coming through

62
00:03:06.900 --> 00:03:09.800
That helps create some of this width. But

63
00:03:09.800 --> 00:03:12.500
now as the club passes there. I'm

64
00:03:12.500 --> 00:03:15.300
going to try and reverse it and go

65
00:03:15.300 --> 00:03:18.400
more into that Jazzy Jeff movement. The thing

66
00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:21.500
that they both have in common is that the arm is

67
00:03:21.500 --> 00:03:24.400
gonna stay more in front of the body. So first

68
00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:27.300
we're going to do a nine to three just to kind

69
00:03:27.300 --> 00:03:28.000
of get comfortable.

70
00:03:29.900 --> 00:03:32.200
With a good with our low point

71
00:03:32.200 --> 00:03:34.600
and our follow-through and where we're going to be now.

72
00:03:35.600 --> 00:03:38.300
We're going to try and not stop at the three position. We're gonna

73
00:03:38.300 --> 00:03:41.300
do nine to follow through. So we're gonna go from this

74
00:03:41.300 --> 00:03:42.400
nine o'clock here.

75
00:03:43.900 --> 00:03:46.500
Jazzy Jeff, so I'm slowly going

76
00:03:46.500 --> 00:03:50.200
past into this follow through position

77
00:03:49.200 --> 00:03:52.200
or at least

78
00:03:52.200 --> 00:03:55.400
sorry past the follow-through position up towards the finish. I want

79
00:03:55.400 --> 00:03:58.900
to at least get the club to Vertical instead of stopping when

80
00:03:58.900 --> 00:03:59.800
the club is parallel.

81
00:04:00.300 --> 00:04:03.300
Now we're gonna add a little bit of speed. So we're gonna do more of a 10 to

82
00:04:03.300 --> 00:04:03.500
2.

83
00:04:04.600 --> 00:04:06.500
focusing on the timing of this movement

84
00:04:08.800 --> 00:04:11.300
Right there and you can see elbows are

85
00:04:11.300 --> 00:04:14.100
still in front of my chest back is almost facing the

86
00:04:14.100 --> 00:04:17.300
target as opposed to a lot

87
00:04:17.300 --> 00:04:20.600
of people who struggle with this movement. We'll kind

88
00:04:20.600 --> 00:04:23.400
of be more like this where the chest has

89
00:04:23.400 --> 00:04:26.300
the the hips are actually closed. The

90
00:04:26.300 --> 00:04:29.200
chest is still closed, but the arms have gone past the

91
00:04:29.200 --> 00:04:30.500
body into that follow through

92
00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:34.800
Okay, let's get that out of the system. Let's see

93
00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:37.200
one more 10 to 2 where we feel

94
00:04:37.200 --> 00:04:38.400
a little bit more.

95
00:04:41.100 --> 00:04:44.500
So that one was pretty good right there. And now as we add speed

96
00:04:44.500 --> 00:04:47.500
as you go closer and closer to your full finish

97
00:04:47.500 --> 00:04:50.100
that arm is gonna Bend so we're gonna still feel like we

98
00:04:50.100 --> 00:04:54.000
keep that elbow more in front of the chest on

99
00:04:53.200 --> 00:04:56.100
the way through so up towards a full swing.

100
00:04:59.100 --> 00:05:02.100
Elbows still in front of the chest and it has

101
00:05:02.100 --> 00:05:05.500
a feeling of the arms being a little bit more this way.

102
00:05:05.500 --> 00:05:09.100
So has a feeling of Jazzy Jeff

103
00:05:09.100 --> 00:05:12.700
movement kind of more like this as opposed to Arms pull

104
00:05:12.700 --> 00:05:16.100
around more like that use that if you struggle

105
00:05:15.100 --> 00:05:18.200
with some contact patterns or

106
00:05:18.200 --> 00:05:21.100
some pull patterns and you see a narrowness in the

107
00:05:21.100 --> 00:05:24.500
follow-through from those arms breaking down too soon getting the

108
00:05:24.500 --> 00:05:27.100
lead shoulder go into more external rotation. It's one of the keys

109
00:05:27.100 --> 00:05:30.800
for getting that look of keeping a straight left arm long into

110
00:05:30.800 --> 00:05:31.500
the follow through
