If you slide the lower-body into the toes or outside the lead foot, then you'll want to work on some lead leg stability. The lead foot backstep is an exaggeration drill to feel the lower body pushing away from the target line. This helps with getting the pelvis to rotate correctly.

00:00:05.200 --> 00:00:08.600
This drill is the lead foot backstep. So this is
1
00:00:08.600 --> 00:00:11.900
a drill to help get the lower body working
2
00:00:11.900 --> 00:00:14.500
correctly, especially that the front leg or
3
00:00:14.500 --> 00:00:17.300
the lead leg. So this is also I
4
00:00:17.300 --> 00:00:20.700
had a question of from William on
5
00:00:20.700 --> 00:00:23.500
the site. He was asking about pushing up versus pushing back.
6
00:00:23.500 --> 00:00:26.200
So I figured I'd do a video to kind of tie it together and I
7
00:00:26.200 --> 00:00:29.400
use this drill some what frequently so here's how
8
00:00:29.400 --> 00:00:33.100
I explained it. If I if we had I'm just
9
00:00:32.100 --> 00:00:35.500
gonna hold the club here and I wanted to rotate it
10
00:00:35.500 --> 00:00:38.300
this way. I could either pull up from this side
11
00:00:38.300 --> 00:00:41.400
or I could push down from this side now if I put this
12
00:00:41.400 --> 00:00:44.600
on the ground and I try to get rotation towards
13
00:00:44.600 --> 00:00:46.400
the target I could either
14
00:00:47.500 --> 00:00:50.700
Pull on this side, or I could push on this side basically
15
00:00:50.700 --> 00:00:53.600
to rotate my lower body. I could
16
00:00:53.600 --> 00:00:57.000
either push this foot backward which would
17
00:00:56.300 --> 00:00:59.000
cause this side to spin or I could
18
00:00:59.300 --> 00:01:02.400
push that leg forward. I could push the ground away
19
00:01:02.400 --> 00:01:05.700
from me that way almost like I was running backwards
20
00:01:05.700 --> 00:01:08.300
or taking a step backwards. So it
21
00:01:08.300 --> 00:01:11.600
pushes kind of back like this and it happens fairly
22
00:01:11.600 --> 00:01:11.900
early.
23
00:01:13.300 --> 00:01:16.300
So what the two golfers that
24
00:01:16.300 --> 00:01:19.700
tend to need a little bit more of this our golfers who have a
25
00:01:19.700 --> 00:01:22.100
lot of a slide or even if it's not much of
26
00:01:22.100 --> 00:01:25.200
a slide if it just kind of there's no straightening the leg. It's
27
00:01:25.200 --> 00:01:28.500
just a bent kickstand and I'm just using my
28
00:01:28.500 --> 00:01:31.200
arms kind of throwing them through like that
29
00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:34.200
as opposed to if I were to actually
30
00:01:34.200 --> 00:01:37.300
feel like I pushed away this way
31
00:01:37.300 --> 00:01:40.300
like I was stepping backward then what would
32
00:01:40.300 --> 00:01:40.500
happen?
33
00:01:41.700 --> 00:01:44.600
Is that leg would straighten as those arms straight
34
00:01:44.600 --> 00:01:47.200
and it would help shallow out or clean
35
00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:48.400
up the bottom of the swing a little bit.
36
00:01:49.700 --> 00:01:53.200
So the actual drill is a back step
37
00:01:52.200 --> 00:01:55.500
and I use the the image of running
38
00:01:55.500 --> 00:01:58.100
backward, but this foot is going to stay planted. So
39
00:01:58.100 --> 00:02:01.500
if I ran backward like this, I'm actually going to open
40
00:02:01.500 --> 00:02:05.100
up and kind of finish facing the target an example
41
00:02:05.100 --> 00:02:08.700
where you can see the upper limit of this would be Kyle Berkshire
42
00:02:08.700 --> 00:02:11.500
where when he is really swinging all
43
00:02:11.500 --> 00:02:13.000
out. He actually does
44
00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:17.300
step back and he will finish facing the target more
45
00:02:17.300 --> 00:02:20.500
like this rather than keeping that foot planted in order
46
00:02:20.500 --> 00:02:23.200
to come back this way. I'm going to feel like I
47
00:02:23.200 --> 00:02:25.000
have to push against the ground.
48
00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:29.100
Like I was pushing away this way, but
49
00:02:28.100 --> 00:02:31.400
as I'm doing that with that left leg this
50
00:02:31.400 --> 00:02:34.500
right side is coming around or coming through. So as
51
00:02:34.500 --> 00:02:37.600
this feeling of the left leg getting out of the way going back
52
00:02:37.600 --> 00:02:40.000
or the right side going through. I remember
53
00:02:40.400 --> 00:02:43.600
early in Tigers career. He used to talk about a feeling of snapping
54
00:02:43.600 --> 00:02:47.200
the lead leg. I think this was kind
55
00:02:46.200 --> 00:02:49.700
of his way of feeling that that proper
56
00:02:49.700 --> 00:02:50.600
lead foot push.
57
00:02:51.700 --> 00:02:54.900
So now you can either preset
58
00:02:54.900 --> 00:02:57.000
it by putting most of your weight onto the
59
00:02:57.200 --> 00:03:00.200
front foot or you can do it. Dynamically. If you
60
00:03:00.200 --> 00:03:03.600
preset it, then basically from right
61
00:03:03.600 --> 00:03:07.000
around here. Once you get your arms pretty much
62
00:03:06.500 --> 00:03:09.700
your left arm parallel, we're
63
00:03:09.700 --> 00:03:12.300
going to feel like we do a little bit of a
64
00:03:12.300 --> 00:03:15.500
back step with a little bit of a hop and we're doing
65
00:03:15.500 --> 00:03:18.300
that back step to try to exaggerate the movement.
66
00:03:18.300 --> 00:03:21.600
Especially this is especially
67
00:03:21.600 --> 00:03:24.200
important. If you are really armed dominant, you will feel like
68
00:03:24.200 --> 00:03:27.100
you can't step and still hit the golf ball.
69
00:03:29.200 --> 00:03:32.100
Um, this helps you overcome that barrier now if we're going to do
70
00:03:32.100 --> 00:03:36.700
it more. Dynamically, we're going to have a little bit of a load
71
00:03:35.700 --> 00:03:38.100
and then as soon as
72
00:03:38.100 --> 00:03:40.600
we get into that side, then we're going to push.
73
00:03:41.300 --> 00:03:45.100
Out of it. So my arms are going to have to be pretty patient because
74
00:03:44.100 --> 00:03:47.200
I'm going to have time to have a little bit of a
75
00:03:47.200 --> 00:03:49.000
shift push.
76
00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:51.800
So here we go more of a
77
00:03:53.300 --> 00:03:56.000
shift push didn't make the full step on that one.
78
00:03:57.100 --> 00:03:59.300
Kind of forgot what I was doing here. We'll do.
79
00:04:00.100 --> 00:04:03.100
One more, so we're up shift.
80
00:04:04.200 --> 00:04:04.700
step back
81
00:04:05.900 --> 00:04:08.000
Now if you have a
82
00:04:08.200 --> 00:04:12.100
hard time making contact this can also help you with getting some of that side
83
00:04:11.100 --> 00:04:14.200
Bend similar to the side Bend through
84
00:04:14.200 --> 00:04:17.800
the ground idea. Once you have a clear feeling of this
85
00:04:17.800 --> 00:04:20.500
leg pushing back, then you can try and
86
00:04:20.500 --> 00:04:24.200
just recreate that same feel without actually
87
00:04:23.200 --> 00:04:25.600
having a big step.
88
00:04:27.300 --> 00:04:30.600
So just have a feeling of that leg going backward
89
00:04:30.600 --> 00:04:34.300
as that right side comes through that will
90
00:04:34.300 --> 00:04:37.700
help you if you're again struggling with
91
00:04:37.700 --> 00:04:40.000
too much of a slide or too much of kind of
92
00:04:40.200 --> 00:04:43.500
a buckle of that lower body on the way through so real quick full
93
00:04:43.500 --> 00:04:46.200
demo. We're gonna do full back step.
94
00:04:49.200 --> 00:04:52.500
Kind of like that. So you'll see these are mostly in the nine to
95
00:04:52.500 --> 00:04:52.700
three.
96
00:04:53.600 --> 00:04:55.000
or 10 to 2 Zone
97
00:04:55.900 --> 00:04:58.200
Now we're going to do back step with a little bit more
98
00:04:58.200 --> 00:04:58.800
shift. So
99
00:05:01.100 --> 00:05:01.400
It's pretty good.
100
00:05:05.900 --> 00:05:08.500
Now we're going to do back step, but
101
00:05:08.500 --> 00:05:10.100
without actually stepping.
102
00:05:11.100 --> 00:05:11.900
So up.
103
00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:13.400
back step
104
00:05:14.500 --> 00:05:17.200
and now we're gonna do it out of more of a full swing which just
105
00:05:17.200 --> 00:05:21.300
forces me to wait a little bit longer, but this usually feels kind
106
00:05:20.300 --> 00:05:22.800
of the most comfortable.
107
00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:24.300
Ready?
108
00:05:25.800 --> 00:05:26.700
back step
109
00:05:27.800 --> 00:05:30.100
Good, so that lower body backs up kind
110
00:05:30.100 --> 00:05:33.100
of helping to trigger the release one of the ways to clean
111
00:05:33.100 --> 00:05:36.000
up some of your floppy lower body mechanics.
