There was an article in 2008 that showed the effects of improving your path into the ball. The article was called “add 42 yards now” and showed how with a 95mph clubhead speed, the difference between an inside path and an outside path was about 42 yards.
The other way to increase distance is to hit it on the sweet spot. A real world example. If you were to hit the center of the club and the ball traveled 240 yards, then that same swing if it were to be 1/2 inch off center, you could lose 12-24 yards (5-10%) and only travel 216-228.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,000
In this concept video, we're going to go over one of my favorite topics, which is power.
00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:11,000
There are two major ways to get power, and in this video, we're going to talk about maximizing
00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:13,000
your current swing.
00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:17,000
The two ways to gain power are either take what clubheads be you're using and maximize
00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:23,000
it, or get the most out of it, or do something different with your body in order to
00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:25,000
create more clubheads speed.
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:30,000
In this first video, we're going to go over how to maximize what you're currently doing.
00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:34,000
And there's two major factors for maximizing what you're doing.
00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:38,000
One is the path that the clubhead is traveling on when it makes contact with the golf ball,
00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:42,000
and two is where are you hitting this on the clubface, or how solid are you hitting
00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:43,000
it?
00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:47,000
So let's cover the second one first, which is how solid are you hitting it?
00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:52,000
It's important to understand that the sweet spot is really just a small point in the middle
00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:53,000
of the club.
00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:56,000
Now you can't always go off of where the top of the club is if you remember from my
00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:03,000
solid contact video, but you can kind of get a pretty good guess that way, because otherwise
00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:06,000
you have to take apart the club to figure out exactly where the center of the club is,
00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:07,000
and that's a little tricky.
00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:12,000
So let's just assume that it's somewhere in the middle of the where the manufacturers
00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:13,000
have marked it.
00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:19,000
Well, if you were to drift a half out, half inch out onto the toe, you'll lose 10% of
00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:21,000
the yardage, maybe.
00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:23,000
Five to 10% but airing more towards 10%.
00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:29,000
If you go five or half inch in towards the heel, you'll lose about 5%.
00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:35,000
So if you're hitting the ball, 300 yards, and you go out here, you could lose as much
00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:41,000
as 10%, that could be 30 yards, so a 270 yard drive could be the difference between
00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:44,000
hitting its center to hitting it on the toe.
00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:46,000
How are you going to figure out if you're doing that?
00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:50,000
Well, one of the best ways is if you mark the face.
00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:53,000
You can either put a sharpie mark on the back of the golf ball and it'll leave a little
00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:59,000
mark on the face, but that tends to add up on the face over time, or you can get some
00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:02,000
anti-fungal, you know, doctor's shoals, talc spray.
00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:10,000
It's basically, you know, a white powder spray, so then when you spray your club face,
00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
when you make contact with the golf ball, boom, it'll leave a little impact mark, and
00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:18,000
you can see exactly where you made contact.
00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:23,000
And then you can make little adjustments to adjust for where you're making contact, either
00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:30,000
by changing some of the path, or by adjusting how far away you're standing from the ball,
00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:33,000
changing your grip, you know, simple little things like that.
00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:36,000
So that's the simple one, is we want to make sure we're hitting it in the center of the
00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:37,000
club face.
00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:40,000
The second one is maximizing path.
00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:49,000
So there was a cool study done in 2008 in the golf magazine called Ed 42 yards now.
00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:53,000
Basically, long story short, they took a 95 mile in our clubbed speed.
00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:57,000
If you get your path coming more from the inside, compared to coming from the outside,
00:02:57,000 --> 00:02:59,000
you could gain 42 yards.
00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:03,000
And the reason they can make that claim is because when you come from the inside, you tend
00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:05,000
to launch the ball higher with less spin.
00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:10,000
When you come from the outside, you tend to launch the ball lower with more spin.
00:03:10,000 --> 00:03:14,000
If you don't hit the ball as far as a lot of your playing partners who you feel aren't
00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:17,000
that much more athletic than you, there's a good chance that you're launching the ball
00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:21,000
really low from a path that's too much outside to in.
00:03:21,000 --> 00:03:26,000
So in the drill section, we got lots of different ways that you can identify the path through
00:03:26,000 --> 00:03:30,000
the ball, and then learning to adjust the face to match that path, or for the shot that
00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:35,000
you're trying to hit, will help you maximize your distance and could be as much as
00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:44,000
25% distance increase, maybe more.
00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:51,000
So pay attention to solid contact, pay attention to your path, and that will help you maximize
00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:53,000
what speed you're currently creating with the driver.
