Practice With A 9-Iron - Bunker

Using a longer, less lofted club is a great way to master the basic skills of bunker play; World Golf Hall of Famer Seve Ballesteros was even famous for being able to hit delicate bunker shots using only a 3-iron. While we certainly don't expect you to match the short game prowess of Seve, you can begin to perform this drill starting with a 9-iron. In order to do this though, you will have to become competent at a few of the most important moves for good bunker play and rid yourself of any bad habits that you may be bringing into the sand.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
The drill is bunker practice with a 99.

00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:08,000
So I've actually got a 7 just to kind of show the concept a little bit more.

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:12,000
But one great skill that you can work on is being able to hit bunker shots with a club

00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:15,000
that's a little bit longer than your sandwich.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:23,000
So a 99 is a great place to start, but I've seen John Rom, hit flop shots with a 4 iron.

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:27,000
So and 7 was famous for being able to spin a 3 iron out of the bunker.

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:32,000
If you can do it with a longer club, you've demonstrated the basic skills.

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:36,000
The basic skills in order to do this with a longer club are swinging the club a little bit

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:39,000
more around while controlling the face rotation.

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:45,000
On a shallower swing it's almost easier or more natural to have the face close on the way

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:46,000
through.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:47,000
So you have to fight that tendency.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:51,000
You still have to get the bottom of the swing out in front of the golf ball.

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:54,000
You don't want to be hitting up on this.

00:00:54,000 --> 00:01:01,000
In order to produce some loft, you have to release the arms a little bit even sooner

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:06,000
than you would do with the sandwich or a lot of wedge.

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:10,000
If you get any amount of shaft lean and body rotation, you're typically going to

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:14,000
blade it and leave it in the sand just like so.

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:18,000
So this helps with the timing of that right arm throw as well as controlling low point

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:25,000
and it exaggerates the need to get even more shallow with your body.

00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:28,000
So I'm going to basically try to lay this almost flat like so.

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:35,000
Swing it around my body while keeping and managing the face as it comes more around

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:36,000
kind of like this.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:40,000
So as I said, I recommend starting with something like a 9 iron and work your way up

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:43,000
to something longer like say a 7 iron.

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:47,000
This is also one of the common ways that you can hit the ball a little bit further.

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:51,000
So if you find yourself with your same wedge, you can only hit it 15 20 yards.

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:56,000
This might be a good way for you to add a 30 to 40 yard bunker shot just by making the

00:01:56,000 --> 00:01:57,000
same swing.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:02,000
Let's switch in clubs.

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:08,000
All right, not too bad.

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:13,000
I did a decent job of managing the bounce.

00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:19,000
I'm going to see if I can add a little bit more loft with a little bit earlier release

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:27,000
and getting the grip a little bit lower to begin with.

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:33,000
So there you can see now I started to get a little bit higher launch by getting the grip

00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:37,000
down and releasing it just a little bit earlier with that right hand.

00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:42,000
If I did that with a sand wedge, that would have been the high really nice floaty soft

00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:47,000
bunker shot, but it's a lot tougher if I can do it with a 7 iron.

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:57,000
I know you can do it with a sand wedge.

00:02:57,000 --> 00:02:59,000
There we go.

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:02,000
You saw me get way down low for that one.

00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:05,000
You saw me really swing around and pop that up.

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:08,000
That came out nice and soft.

00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:10,000
I would call that a win and now I can move on to the next drill.
