Finesse Wedge - Chipping and Pitching

I think an important zone in wedge play is "the corner". Training backswing length helps with distance control and training the awkward transition zone when the swing starts working more vertically is a great place to focus.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,000
This wedge drill is practice turning the corner. So this is more of a concept of how to practice.
00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:11,000
So if you're making relatively solid contact, your next goal is to work on distance control
00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:16,000
and controlling your landing spot and turning that basic technique into a really good skill.
00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:20,000
So with a lot of my golfers, I have a phrase of practice turning the corner.
00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:24,000
There's what I mean about that. With your standard finesse wedge shot,
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:32,000
if you're hitting really close, kind of bump and run style, then you're going to take
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:37,000
practice wings where the club is going to stop before the wrist do a whole lot of hinging.
00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:44,000
There might be just a slight amount in that takeaway, but it's going to stop basically before you get
00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:53,000
to about hip height. So it ends up looking something like that. Well, what ends up happening is
00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:58,000
golfers get really good at controlling their landing spot on these shorter shots.
00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:04,000
But then when you have to go a little bit further, instead of making a bigger swing,
00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:10,000
what they do is they try and speed it up. And yes, I mean, it's all in contact there, but
00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:16,000
overly accelerating is going to tend to lead towards distance control problems, especially under pressure.
00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:22,000
So what I prefer is you keep the same tempo and you work on lengthening the swing.
00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:28,000
What that means is you're going to work on what I call turning the corner or starting to get some
00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:33,000
hinge. Because most golfers are comfortable hitting these little pit shots where you're down here.
00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:38,000
And then they're comfortable hitting, say, 50, 60 yards shots where you're up here.
00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:45,000
But in between is that corner. So you want to get comfortable making back swings where you're
00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:51,000
somewhere in that corner and still being able to hit the ball solidly so you can control your
00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:59,000
distance control. So when practice, that would look, we'll go one,
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:12,000
before and then we'll do one in the corner. So that went, good five yards further.
00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:20,000
And then we'll do one where we go past the corner. And by working on that range of short of the
00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:26,000
corner in the corner, pass the corner. That'll make you more comfortable changing direction
00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:30,000
with the cast pattern from different length backswings. And that's really going to give you a leg
00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:37,000
up when it comes to dialing in your distance control around the greens. So you've got short of the corner
00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:42,000
and then you've got in the corner.
00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:49,000
You can see that goes just a touch higher and a little further and then you've got past the corner.
00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:57,000
Again, going a little bit higher and a little bit further. So that'll help you with your
00:02:57,000 --> 00:03:00,000
distance control with your finesse wedges.
