Quick Vs Slow in Transition

Golfers that will tend to feel slow in transition usually have a swing that is steep and upper body dominated. When they get a more balanced sequence, the swing usually feels slow. However, golfers who have more early extension, slide, or excessive lower body use will often report feeling their swing is quicker or more compact. Don't be scared of either feeling but trust the one that applies to your game.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:09,000
This concept video, we're going to discuss quick, verslow in transition.

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:15,000
So I had a member question come in about should the transition, he has a couple different

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:20,000
swings, should the transition feel slow or should the transition feel more kind of punchier

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:21,000
quick?

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:26,000
The way he actually described it was, should it feel like one movement where everything

00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:30,000
kind of goes at the ball or should it feel like two movements.

00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:35,000
Now I'm always cautious when I answer what should this feel like because in my years of

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:40,000
coaching I've experienced golfers describing feels that I would have never imagined.

00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:47,000
So my normal response is my goal is to use the drill to get you to do it and then

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:50,000
you pay attention and tell me what it feels like.

00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:56,000
But in this area of quick, verslow or one, vers two I have noticed some trend.

00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:02,000
So in general it can be either so I'm going to give you which way I think it will apply

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:04,000
to you and your swing.

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:09,000
If you tend to be more lower body dominant, if you tend to have more early extension from

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:16,000
the leg drive or if you tend to have more slide from the knee and ankle drive, then in general

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:21,000
I think it will feel quicker and more like one movement because what usually happens

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:25,000
is when you go with your lower body, the arms weight and then they have to feel like

00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:32,000
they kind of snap down at the bottom where if you do a better job maintaining your posture

00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:37,000
and using your abs in your core then you're going to tend to feel that all this is more

00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:44,000
connected and that connectedness tends to make things feel like they are happening earlier

00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:50,000
because the arms don't really have to wait for this excessive lower body movement.

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:56,000
The opposite is if you have more of a cast, more of a kind of a lunge or a big spin of the

00:01:56,000 --> 00:01:57,000
upper body.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:01,000
So if you tend to have more of a shoulder dominant or upper body dominant swing then you're

00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:06,000
most likely going to feel it's much slower when you do it correctly.

00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:10,000
So if you get to the top of the swing and you tend to really pull with that shoulder or you

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
tend to throw it with the arms or you tend to kind of lunge and pull forward like that,

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:20,000
then what will end up happening is there's this new movement of kind of bumping and you

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:25,000
have to wait until the arms get down to somewhere around here before they end up before

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:31,000
they actually fire and so that now starts to feel like it's a more rhythmic or a one-two

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:39,000
kind of like a step then go compared to what you're used to doing which is going hard

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:41,000
right away from the top of the swing.

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:45,000
So I have noticed this trend, it's more upper body dominant, you're going to tend to feel

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:52,000
slow or smooth or one-two in transition but if you're more of an early extended slider

00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:59,000
then you're going to tend to feel more of a unified one just fire straight from the top

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:00,000
of the swing.

00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:04,000
So if you're looking at video and you're exploring with some tempo feels of what this

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:07,000
gives you a little direction as far as which you should try.

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:12,000
My philosophy is you can try both or you can try a tempo related drill and then you can

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:18,000
describe feel free to comment below does your swing feel quick and two part or does it feel

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:20,000
fast and one part.

00:03:20,000 --> 00:03:26,000
I've seen it go both ways when golfers make improvements from some type of inconsistent

00:03:26,000 --> 00:03:29,000
pattern to a little bit closer to the stock tourist swing.

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:31,000
So we'll try to do one good swing.

00:03:31,000 --> 00:03:39,000
I'll tell you which one it's going to feel like but hopefully it's a good swing.

00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:40,000
Just like that.
