Right Side Of The Body Vs Left Side Of The Body

We all want one swing that will work with every club, but unfortunately things don't work that way. Instead, it is important to understand the spectrums that exist between different swings. One spectrum that I like is using the right (trail) vs left (lead) side of the body as a reference for where you want the club at impact. With the driver it is more to the right of your body, and with the irons it is more to the left (or middle).

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
Strill is right side of the body versus left side of the body.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:08,000
So I always like to talk about these spectrums, right?

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:11,000
And how no two clubs are swung the same way,

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:16,000
but there's some transfer and there's some things that work really well

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:20,000
with the driver compared to there's some things that work really well with the wedges and the short clubs.

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:25,000
So one of the concepts that I talk about with my students is right side of the body versus left side of the body.

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:31,000
And basically the driver is going to be a little bit more right side or trail side for right hand and golfer.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:36,000
And the irons can get away with being a little bit more left side.

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:38,000
So here's what I mean.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:42,000
If you imagine a line sticking straight out from your sternum,

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:47,000
right, my hands can be anywhere either straight in front of that kind of like so.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:51,000
Or I could bring it all the way over here to the right side of my body,

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:54,000
or I could bring it over here to the left side of the body.

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:58,000
If my hands are in front of my chest and my body turns, that's not the same thing.

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:01,000
That's all one reference where my hands are straight out in front of my chest.

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:04,000
So for the most part at the top of this wing,

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:07,000
the hands are going to be towards the right side of my body.

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:13,000
For good iron play because I'm trying to hit down because I want a somewhat steep angle of attack

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:16,000
because my stance is narrower and I'm more on top of the golf ball.

00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:24,000
It works to get my hands more on the left side of the body or past that middle midline.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:29,000
Even if my body is rotating, it works really well to get that downward angle of attack.

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:32,000
If my hands are working more towards that left side of the body.

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:36,000
More in this chop movement, kind of like that.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:38,000
Now when it comes to the driver,

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:45,000
you will tend to see that the guys who have a better combination of distance and accuracy will hit the ball

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:48,000
with it a little bit more on the right side of your body.

00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:54,000
This is usually a challenging feeling for a lot of golfers, especially if they're more in this

00:01:54,000 --> 00:01:55,000
cast pattern.

00:01:55,000 --> 00:01:59,000
But basically, if I go up to the top of my swing,

00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:04,000
so if I go up to the top of my swing, clubs all the way on the right side of my body,

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:09,000
I'm going to just kind of exaggerate this and almost gym-furricate and bring it across like this.

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
Very good drivers, the golf ball are still going to have the club slightly behind that midline

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:20,000
after impact. So I'll take a student and put him in this position and I'll say,

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:27,000
okay, now I want you to take that position and just use your body to get that position just after impact.

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:34,000
And now could you imagine creating speed and doing that or are you going to have to create

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:39,000
speed by getting this back out in front of this? So when we're looking at driver,

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:46,000
more on this right side of your body, more behind your body, kind of like that.

00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:50,000
Almost that impact when we're talking about irons, more in front of your body,

00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:55,000
or towards the left side of your body. When we're looking at kind of the mid irons,

00:02:55,000 --> 00:03:01,000
you can get away with either of them. But helping you see how these spectrums work will help you understand

00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:06,000
why you struggle with one particular aspect to your game and ultimately give you some strategies

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:11,000
that you can use to train it. So if you're like most golfers and you struggle with needing the

00:03:11,000 --> 00:03:16,000
clubs to be out in front of your body in order to hit it, you can do nine to three's work

00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:22,000
some of those leave the arm behind, tick-tack-toe, some of those sequencing reference drills.

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:27,000
We're basically the club is going to be well to the right side of my body and I'm just going to

00:03:27,000 --> 00:03:32,000
use my body rotation to get that relationship all the way to impact.

00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:43,000
From the down-the-line camera view, the way that that will tend to look will be a lot more body

00:03:43,000 --> 00:03:50,000
rotation. You'll be able to see that the sternum is pointing out there while the golfer is

00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:59,000
making contact with while with an iron, it will look a little bit more like the chest is more

00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:05,000
pointed just out in front of the golf ball and the arms will be a little bit straighter,

00:04:06,000 --> 00:04:13,000
kind of like that versus like that. So it's a little bit in these difference in the positions,

00:04:13,000 --> 00:04:17,000
a little bit difference in the sequencing but it can help you understand why you're either struggling

00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:22,000
with your short irons or you're struggling with your driver. If it's just struggling in the middle,

00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:27,000
this is not the that it comes up video for that but it would help you understand if you're

00:04:27,000 --> 00:04:31,000
struggling with one of the ends, either the longer clubs or the shorter clubs, this can be a

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:36,000
very useful reference point for when you're adjusting your stocks wing.
