Releasing around the trail side shoulder creates the following situation:
- Low point behind the ball
- Path more outside in
- Arcwidth narrowing
- Clubface more closed
Releasing around the lead shoulder does the opposite
- Low point in front of the ball
- Path more in to out
- Arcwidth widening
- Clubface more open

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This row is looking at right versus left shoulder release.
00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:11,000
So this is a similar drill or video or concept to the both arms can't swing like a pendulum.
00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:17,000
But it's basically looking at the idea of are you swinging more around your right shoulder,
00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:20,000
whether you're doing it with the left arm or the right arm,
00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:23,000
or are you swinging it more around your left shoulder?
00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:25,000
So right shoulder, left shoulder.
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:29,000
If you imagine this as kind of the hub of a circle,
00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:34,000
then what you would see is if you were to swing it around that right side,
00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:39,000
then it would reach its bottom when it's pretty much in line here,
00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:42,000
and then it would start coming up or back in,
00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:45,000
and from the down line it would start coming more to the left.
00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:52,000
So if you have more of a flip style release where the club is releasing out in front of the right shoulder,
00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:56,000
then the bottom of the swing is going to be behind the golf ball,
00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:00,000
unless you lunge enough to get your right shoulder past it,
00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:05,000
which is really hard to do, or you swing more outside in.
00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:10,000
So, or potentially you could slide to get that shoulder in front of the golf ball.
00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:15,000
But basically if the shoulder is behind the golf ball and you're swinging it around that shoulder,
00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:19,000
the path is going to be more low to high,
00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:24,000
and the contact, or the path from the down line is going to be more outside in,
00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:27,000
which will tend to air more on a toe style contact.
00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:29,000
The opposite will happen with the left shoulder.
00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:31,000
If you're releasing it more around the left shoulder,
00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:34,000
you'll tend to hit the ball earlier in the arc,
00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:38,000
and then it'll bottom out wherever that left shoulder is,
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:40,000
and then continue on the way through.
00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:44,000
From the down line, because that left shoulder is ahead of the ball,
00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:47,000
it's still going to be moving into out,
00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:51,000
while it's making contact, and it's not until it gets past the ball,
00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:55,000
that it's going to tend to start working back into the left.
00:01:55,000 --> 00:01:57,000
Now, I stress that the beginning,
00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:02,000
that this isn't about swinging with your right arm or your left arm in order to do it.
00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:04,000
When I teach the single arm releases,
00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:07,000
I teach using the right arm,
00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:12,000
but swinging around or swinging with movements,
00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:16,000
that tend to look like they're rotating around that left shoulder,
00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:24,000
as opposed to doing movements that look like they're swinging more around that right shoulder.
00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:27,000
Also, when you're doing the left arm,
00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:30,000
it's part of the reason why it's usually a lot easier
00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:34,000
to get the ball to launch really low when you're hitting the left arm,
00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:37,000
and it's easier to get crisp contact,
00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:40,000
because the left arm is just naturally ahead of the golf ball.
00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:42,000
But for some people,
00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:46,000
just kind of getting this imagery in mind
00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:49,000
that right around here,
00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:54,000
even with that is where I'm trying to get the club to bottom out,
00:02:54,000 --> 00:02:57,000
not so much right in front of my chest,
00:02:57,000 --> 00:03:01,000
and definitely not in front of my right shoulder.
00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:05,000
So, while you're working on nine to three's,
00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:08,000
or you're working on your full swings,
00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:12,000
trying to get that bottomless wing out more in front of the left shoulder,
00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:16,000
that will take a good white movement,
00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:19,000
and because you're going to have some shaft lean,
00:03:19,000 --> 00:03:22,000
when you do that, it will take some clubface rotation.
00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:28,000
But if you put those together, it allows you to have a much more consistent bottomless wing,
00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:30,000
solid strike with the irons,
00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:35,000
and the white movement allows for you to have that really good side bend with the driver.
00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:41,000
So it tends to set you up with some of the skills that help me give you a really consistent ball striker.
00:03:41,000 --> 00:03:44,000
So you can do it at varying speeds,
00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:47,000
and what you'll find is actually the better,
00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:51,000
you get at the movement and rotating it more around that side.
00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:57,000
The more you can do kind of off-speed hits slow motion or swinging really hard.
00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:01,000
The more that you're swing or the more that you're swing tends to
00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:04,000
bottom out right in front of the golf ball,
00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:07,000
the more you will be or right at the golf ball,
00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:12,000
the more that you'll be tied to tempo in order to hit it solidly.
00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:18,000
So working on that good release will get things rotating more around the space in front of the golf ball,
00:04:18,000 --> 00:04:20,000
which helps with hitting down on it,
00:04:20,000 --> 00:04:22,000
or hitting far enough forward,
00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:24,000
getting the wide point out in front,
00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:28,000
and all those other things that lead to a lot of consistency.
00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:33,000
you
