This is a challenging start-line drill that you can perform in your living room or on the practice putting green. To begin, all you need is a meter-stick, preferably made of metal and with a hole at one end. From here, as long as you have a level lie, you can begin to work on face-control and start-line in a more target focused and challenging scenario. Ideally, you should be able to roll the ball down the entire length of the meter stick using multiple speeds. With practice, this should help you key in on any tendencies for a push/pull miss and lead you to a more consistent stroke under pressure.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
The start line drill is roll it down the meter stick.
00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So I highly recommend practicing this at home, but if you're using a meter stick that you
00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:14,000
put tape on to calibrate your distances, then one other great way that you can use it
00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:19,000
is if you get one of the meter sticks that's a metal, so it's hopefully not going to
00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:23,000
warp too much, and then b has a hole in the end.
00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:26,000
You can get the ball to sit in the hole pretty easily.
00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:33,000
The key here is hopefully you're practicing on a pretty flat surface, so hardwood that's
00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:37,000
level is much easier than say carpet or this green.
00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:42,000
I'll be impressed if I'm able to do this too many times here on the green, because we got
00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:47,000
some slope in a little bit of, or this is pretty close to a flat part, but we've got a bit
00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:53,000
of wind, and when there's a little cushion underneath, if it gets off the center, it actually
00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:57,000
speeds up how quickly it goes off of the meter stick.
00:00:57,000 --> 00:00:57,000
Let me sense.
00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:03,000
So this is a great way for working on your face control.
00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:11,000
I like the one where you're hitting two balls to see if that was led a little bit more
00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:16,000
with the heel, you're hitting two balls to work on face control, but this is a great way
00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:20,000
for working on face control in more of a relationship to a target.
00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:26,000
So now I'm imagining, let's see if I can get that straight, I'm going to basically roll this
00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:33,000
with a slow speed as I can down this meter stick.
00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:41,000
It's, I wouldn't say easy, but it's easier to roll it down the meter stick if you have a lot of
00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:48,000
pace. You saw that rolled pretty well, but if I do that same thing,
00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:56,000
I'll save that one, I thought it was going to roll off. If you do it slower, then you've got a decent
00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:04,000
chance of it rolling off the meter stick if it gets a little off. Today's a good putting day.
00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:09,000
I'm controlling my start line pretty well. Usually those are the days that I don't
00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:17,000
read it as well though. It's just a little tendency. So this can help you work on, if you can roll
00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:23,000
a meter stick, then that means that unless you misread it, you should never miss a put inside
00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:27,000
three feet and you should be able to control your start lines on virtually any putts.
00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:32,000
If you can do this at slow speeds, then I would, I'm fine with working on a little bit further
00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:37,000
speed because some people, the way that they create power tends to either cause the face to get
00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:43,000
open or cause the face to get shut. So testing it at different speeds can be helpful.
00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:49,000
But basically, if the face gets a little bit off, you'll see that it rolls off
00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:55,000
one side or the other depending on if it was more of a push or a pull. So this can help you with a
00:02:55,000 --> 00:03:00,000
diagnostic, if you're not quite sure how well you're controlling the face or what your tendency is.
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:06,000
If you did 10 putts and 7 of them fell off to the right or 8 of them fell off to the left,
00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:12,000
then you could identify your neutral face control tendency. I pull more putts or I push more putts.
00:03:13,000 --> 00:03:18,000
If you do 10 putts and 8 of them roll straight down the stick, then start lines not your biggest concern.
00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:23,000
I'd work on green, reading and speed control. So this is a great way to dial in your ability to
00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:30,000
make those short putts at home as long as you have a metal meter stick as well as a flat surface
00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:30,000
to practice on.
