Ruler Release

As we emphasize in the single arm release videos, the left arm has a primary role of supinating to help get the face pointing in line with the target. A lot of amateurs use too much extension of the wrist as a means of squaring the face. This drill gives clear feedback into how well you are able to maintain your wrist flexion at slow speeds. When you add pivot speed to it, the wrist will lose more of it's flexion after the ball, but in short nine to three shots, you should be able to maintain the wrist position throughout.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:02,000
The Stirl is the ruler release.

00:00:02,000 --> 00:00:07,000
So I'd like to have really clear feedback whenever I'm doing a drill and a lot of players

00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:10,000
have trouble feeling what's going on with the lead wrist.

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:15,000
So this is an adaption of an old lead truvino drill that I used to like.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:21,000
Basically I've got a flexible plastic ruler with no metal edges.

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:23,000
I think that's important when you're doing the drill.

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:27,000
And I've got it just strapped to my left forearm using a couple rubber bands.

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:29,000
You can use tape if you want.

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:33,000
Now basically what it's going to do is it's going to give me some feedback as far as if I

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:36,000
hit the ruler going this way or that way.

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:38,000
So flexion and extension.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:44,000
Now because it limits flexion extension when I get in my setup position and you'll have to

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:47,000
adjust it just a little bit so it's about the right length of the knuckles.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:51,000
But when I get in my setup position you can see that because I have my wrist about 25 degrees

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:54,000
extended or so it's going to create some space.

00:00:55,000 --> 00:01:00,000
What'll happen is when I take it to the top of the backswing and when I do the motor cycle

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:06,000
in this 9 to 3 position you can now see that I've got it pretty much in line with the ruler

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:10,000
as well or if anything I've got a little bit of space.

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:14,000
So the purpose of this drill is I can take it back to here and create some space.

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:20,000
And then I can try and execute my 9 to 3 swing and in the finished position I've still

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:22,000
got a little bit of space.

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:28,000
If my pride, if my normal way of squaring the club face is going to be getting down here

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:35,000
and then flipping the wrist I'm going to feel this ruler up against my wrist.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:38,000
So it's just a really good tactile feedback.

00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:43,000
Now in the full swing what'll happen is because I'm bracing that'll cause me to lose

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:50,000
this flexion or sorry the flexion and it will start working towards extension like so.

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:57,000
But on these simple little 9 to 3 drills I should be able to maintain that position in

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:03,000
the wrist and just use my pivot and arm extension to hit the ball and not have to use the

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:05,000
extension of that lead wrist.

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:09,000
So this is a great way if you're feeling like that lead wrist breaking down or that trail

00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:13,000
wrist flipping through impact is a big source of your inconsistency especially with your

00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:15,000
irons.

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:20,000
This will help you kind of narrow in the bottom of your swing and it gives what I think is

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:26,000
a great little source of feedback provided by one of the ball striking greats, Leachervino.

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:28,000
So this is the ruler release.

00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:32,000
You can't really do it in full swings but it's great for training your 9 to 3 or the

00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:32,000
release pattern.
