Shallow Timeline - What Shallows At What Points In The Downswing

Reading the feedback from a shot is a good skill for longterm development. In this video, we discuss the different times that you might start creeping toward too shallow a path and the movements that would take you there. But becoming more focused on the timing of when the swing issue creeps in, you'll have a good understanding of what is causing it and ultimately what you have to change to fix it.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This video is the steep and shallow flow chart, the shallow version.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So we're going to go through the downswing and look at the path of the club.

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:14,000
Now in the steep and shallow flow chart or the steep and shallow overview video,

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:19,000
I show you that the major movements that are going to cause shallow are going to be

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:24,000
right rotation of the arms, so kind of going like that.

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:28,000
Lifting the arms, so the arms working more this way to end the shallow out.

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:35,000
Right side bend and extension and also right rotation or having because it's a downswing

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:38,000
movement less left rotation.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:44,000
So the big ones are going to be right side bend and extension and right rotation of the

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:46,000
arms kind of like that.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:50,000
So now we're going to break the downswing into three distinct phases.

00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:54,000
The middle phase is kind of this little blend between the transition and the release,

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:56,000
but we're going to look at the transition.

00:00:56,000 --> 00:00:59,000
We're going to look at blending transition into release and then we're going to look

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:05,000
at the release because you may get shallow in three different phases.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:12,000
So the top of the swing, if we get shallow in the transition phase, it's almost always

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:19,000
going to be a power source issue, at least part of the program will have to resolve around

00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:20,000
how you're creating speed.

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:23,000
So the common one would basically be from the top of the swing.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:28,000
If I go into right side bend and I'm kind of doing a back extension to pull this

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:29,000
club down.

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:34,000
It's early extension pattern and it'll look like that right off the bat and this club

00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:37,000
will tend to drop inside.

00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:42,000
But often what golfers will do is even if I'm going like that, they will use a steep

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:47,000
arm movement to kind of balance it out so it's not too steep or too shallow there.

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:52,000
But the most common one would be that right side bend too soon as opposed to regaining

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:58,000
your flexion first and kind of waiting before going into that right side bend until

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:00,000
during the release.

00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:05,000
The second phase would be blending that transition into the release and there's a couple

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:08,000
different common patterns that start to get off there.

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:14,000
If I haven't started the motorcycle and the club face is coming in an open position,

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:19,000
I'll often start that early extension pattern so that I'm going to be able to pull back

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:24,000
away to get that club face to slam shut down at the bottom.

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:30,000
So it's usually if I'm getting shallow during this transition or during this blend between

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:35,000
transition and release, I'm looking at the club face first and foremost.

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:40,000
Then the last section would be looking at the release and just like the steep version,

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:45,000
the release is going to tend to be how I'm organizing the club face which is going to look

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:47,000
a lot at what the arms are doing.

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:53,000
Now in this case, it's typically using the body to get the club face to line up so

00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:56,000
that I can get the club face to close.

00:02:56,000 --> 00:03:03,000
It would be very rare for the arms to just want to kind of stay shallow and underneath

00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:08,000
because a lot of the movements that are going to shallow the club way down there will also

00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:13,000
tend to open the club face so you would tend to struggle with way big blocks and push

00:03:13,000 --> 00:03:15,000
fades.

00:03:15,000 --> 00:03:21,000
So if everything looks pretty good here but then I start to get into a shallow movement

00:03:21,000 --> 00:03:28,000
there, it's typically going to be that right side bend lift and it's typically going to be

00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:32,000
the one that I actually forgot in the intro video or the intro of this video which would

00:03:32,000 --> 00:03:36,000
be the extension of the arms tends to shallow things out.

00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:42,000
So if I'm getting here and then I extend those arms, that will tend to give that look

00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:49,000
of the shallow which will also because the arms are extending too soon will tend to stall

00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:51,000
my body from rotate it.

00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:56,000
So instead of getting into this position and continued rotation and letting those arms

00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:00,000
extend a little bit later, if I get into a pretty good delivery position and then those

00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:05,000
arms just go straight from there, it will tend to cause my body to stall.

00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:10,000
So again, down the release we're looking more at the club face and how the arms are contributing

00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:12,000
to the overly shallow pattern.

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:17,000
In transition we're looking more at the power sources and then in the middle we're looking

00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:21,000
at kind of a blend it could be either path it could be face.

00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:26,000
So if you're unsure if you have a shallow pattern where you're hitting more of kind of

00:04:26,000 --> 00:04:31,000
picky contacts, maybe even thin shots and shanks, if you're having more of the block hook

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:36,000
combo you want to identify why and when you are starting to get shallow.

00:04:36,000 --> 00:04:40,000
If you have a hard time figuring it out you're welcome to submit a video and we can help

00:04:40,000 --> 00:04:44,000
guide you as to when you're getting shallow and what are some proper drills that might

00:04:44,000 --> 00:04:46,000
have a good chance of helping you fix it.
