Steeps & Shallows - Bunker

The "steeps & shallows" balance is a bit different for a bunker shot than it is for a full-swing. Players who struggle with bunker play will often default to their full-swing "balance" by mistake. Therefore, it is important to make the following adjustments when stepping into the sand:

Setup:

  • Stand taller at address with less torso side-bend.
  • Place your nose on top of the ball and more weight on the lead side.
  • Play the ball more forward.

Backswing & Release:

  • Allow the clubhead to pass the hands.
  • Return the shaft to vertical at impact.
  • Create a "narrow" backswing.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,000
This concept video is balancing the steepest in shallows in a bunker swing.

00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:08,000
So the steepest in shallow balance is a little bit different in a bunker shot than it is

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:10,000
for your full swing.

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:14,000
With your full swing, the body is a little bit lower and more open.

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:15,000
Those are both steepest.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:17,000
So it's got the side bend to balance it out.

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:19,000
That puts your upper body behind the ball.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:24,000
And then your arms are going to be straightening and retaining the leg.

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:29,000
So the straightening helps shallow, retaining the leg kind of steepens.

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:33,000
You'll notice that you've got a blend of steepest in shallows on each one.

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:38,000
With the bunker shot, we're trying to have the shaft come back to pretty much neutral

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:42,000
an impact and the bottom of the swing wall to head of the golf ball, the club had passes

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:43,000
very quickly.

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:46,000
So it's got more of a circular shape to it.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:53,000
Now we want to be narrow so that we can have the club going down into the sand, but we also

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:55,000
want to be flat.

00:00:55,000 --> 00:00:58,000
So to do that, we do a couple different things with our setup position.

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:02,000
We're going to play the ball more forward, which helps shallow things out, and we're

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:05,000
going to sit more vertically, which helps shallow things out.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:10,000
But then we're also going to get our shoulders more level and our nose on top of the ball

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:12,000
by leaning more into our left quad.

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:19,000
So that combination, steepens things back out and pre-produce a flatter swing but allow me to

00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:21,000
get pretty narrow.

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:28,000
The arms are going to work on more of a narrow path in the backswing as then they're

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:33,000
going to be pretty close to me, but I'm going to release that narrowness down at the

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:38,000
bottom because it's very much a right arm or right handed shot and that shallow things

00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:40,000
back out.

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:45,000
So the big thing is I'm a little bit more left in my setup and then I'm a little bit earlier

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:47,000
with my arm throw.

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:51,000
The body position helps me control the bottom of the swing being in front of the golf

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:57,000
ball and the arm throw helps me keep the face from rotating and use the bounce properly.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:05,000
So that I can get a relatively long flat bottom of the swing and keep the loft on the club

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:07,000
so that I can pop it up in the air.

00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:14,000
So we'll demonstrate that steepens shallow, get in that left quad, narrow during the backswing

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:25,000
but on a flatter path because it's a little bit more around kind of like so.

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:31,000
Now most of the time if you struggle with bunkers I'd say 80% of the time it's because

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:35,000
you get too shallow and the shallowness will either come from setting up too far behind

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:41,000
the golf ball or swinging the arms too wide early in the downswing and then coming up

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:42,000
into the golf ball like that.

00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:45,000
All of those are shallows.

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:50,000
It is possible there are some golfers who struggle with getting a little bit too steep

00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:56,000
and the golfers tend to get too steep typically have too much of a spin and they'll

00:02:56,000 --> 00:02:59,000
really cut across the ball.

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:05,000
So they'll tend to shank it, tow shank it and they'll tend to blade more than chunk shots.

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:10,000
So if you find that you fall into one of those patterns look on video and see which

00:03:10,000 --> 00:03:18,000
you need to balance but overall the body is steep by being on top but shallow by being

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:24,000
more vertical and the arms are shallow by getting thrown early but steep because they're

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:28,000
coming from a more narrow position not a wide position like so.
