Louis Oosthuizen's famous rhythm (shown with slow motion video)
There are two things required for great rhythm - relaxed arms and good sequencing. To sequence the body well, you want to power the downswing with the larger muscles of your body. The relaxed arms will usually show up in a free extension of the arms during the release. Watch how Louis demonstrates both of these keys in this analysis video of his swing.

00:00:00.030 --> 00:00:02.520
in this analysis video we're going to
00:00:02.520 --> 00:00:04.890
take a look at the swing of Louis
00:00:04.890 --> 00:00:07.890
Oosthuizen now Louis Hazen is one of the
00:00:07.890 --> 00:00:09.660
top 20 golfers in the world right now
00:00:09.660 --> 00:00:13.559
and he's frequently in the top tier of
00:00:13.559 --> 00:00:16.470
ball strikers so driving distance
00:00:16.470 --> 00:00:19.740
driving accuracy or total driving on
00:00:19.740 --> 00:00:22.050
greens and regulation he's always kind
00:00:22.050 --> 00:00:23.699
of in the mix in terms of ball striking
00:00:23.699 --> 00:00:25.920
statistics in this video we're going to
00:00:25.920 --> 00:00:28.920
take a look at the one key that allows
00:00:28.920 --> 00:00:32.160
him to have this great tempo and allows
00:00:32.160 --> 00:00:34.079
that tempo to show up in these really
00:00:34.079 --> 00:00:36.300
highly ranked ball striking statistics
00:00:36.300 --> 00:00:40.500
Louie embodies the idea of let your body
00:00:40.500 --> 00:00:42.600
swing the club so I'm going to show you
00:00:42.600 --> 00:00:45.300
two ways that he shows that he powers
00:00:45.300 --> 00:00:46.890
the swing with his body and that his
00:00:46.890 --> 00:00:49.559
arms are fairly relaxed relaxed and
00:00:49.559 --> 00:00:52.949
somewhat secondary in terms of creating
00:00:52.949 --> 00:00:55.530
speed to what his body's doing so the
00:00:55.530 --> 00:00:58.379
first major key would be looking at this
00:00:58.379 --> 00:01:00.870
movement in transition and looking at
00:01:00.870 --> 00:01:03.270
the spacing between his lead arm and his
00:01:03.270 --> 00:01:05.760
chest golfers who tend to power their
00:01:05.760 --> 00:01:09.510
swing with the body will tend to retain
00:01:09.510 --> 00:01:12.090
that connection longer and longer into
00:01:12.090 --> 00:01:12.630
the downswing
00:01:12.630 --> 00:01:14.880
so you'll see that while the arm is
00:01:14.880 --> 00:01:17.729
dropping down it's it it doesn't come
00:01:17.729 --> 00:01:21.180
flying off his upper body until very
00:01:21.180 --> 00:01:23.939
late in the swing we can compare that to
00:01:23.939 --> 00:01:27.540
a more arm driven swing where we can see
00:01:27.540 --> 00:01:29.579
that the arm is starting to get off of
00:01:29.579 --> 00:01:32.400
the body through this phase here and
00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:35.340
then that results in having less body
00:01:35.340 --> 00:01:39.119
rotation at impact now getting back to
00:01:39.119 --> 00:01:41.880
Louie we can see that as we scrub
00:01:41.880 --> 00:01:44.520
through his swing while he has a tiny
00:01:44.520 --> 00:01:47.159
bit of lower body early extension he
00:01:47.159 --> 00:01:50.670
keeps his his upper body or his thorax
00:01:50.670 --> 00:01:53.430
and relatively the same space and does a
00:01:53.430 --> 00:01:56.009
great job of using his body kind of it's
00:01:56.009 --> 00:01:59.520
a complete unit to power the swing from
00:01:59.520 --> 00:02:02.100
the face on view you can see a very good
00:02:02.100 --> 00:02:04.130
sequencing of that lower body
00:02:04.130 --> 00:02:06.630
transmitting that energy into his core
00:02:06.630 --> 00:02:10.679
and then using his arms last during the
00:02:10.679 --> 00:02:12.730
release so he has very good
00:02:12.730 --> 00:02:15.489
which is part of what shows up to the
00:02:15.489 --> 00:02:18.090
commentators as having beautiful tempo
00:02:18.090 --> 00:02:20.799
now from the face on view we can look at
00:02:20.799 --> 00:02:22.890
his release in a little bit more detail
00:02:22.890 --> 00:02:25.269
because the release I think is one of
00:02:25.269 --> 00:02:27.159
the really telling things about Louis
00:02:27.159 --> 00:02:28.750
swing he's frequently described as
00:02:28.750 --> 00:02:31.180
having this classic swing frequently
00:02:31.180 --> 00:02:33.069
described as having this being this
00:02:33.069 --> 00:02:34.900
great ball striker and i'ma show you how
00:02:34.900 --> 00:02:36.280
there's a couple things that go on
00:02:36.280 --> 00:02:38.650
during his release that would make you
00:02:38.650 --> 00:02:40.239
question some traditional golf
00:02:40.239 --> 00:02:43.480
instruction so for example let's talk
00:02:43.480 --> 00:02:45.430
about the left arm staying straight so
00:02:45.430 --> 00:02:47.739
you can see that he he maintains the
00:02:47.739 --> 00:02:50.019
left arm staying straight here in the
00:02:50.019 --> 00:02:52.870
backswing but now because of his arms
00:02:52.870 --> 00:02:55.569
being fairly relaxed and being powered
00:02:55.569 --> 00:02:57.819
by the body you'll see that that left
00:02:57.819 --> 00:03:00.010
arm is going to change the amount of
00:03:00.010 --> 00:03:02.260
Bend a couple different times during the
00:03:02.260 --> 00:03:02.680
downswing
00:03:02.680 --> 00:03:06.459
so as he gets to his delivery position
00:03:06.459 --> 00:03:08.290
right about here you'll see that the
00:03:08.290 --> 00:03:10.180
club starts working more across his body
00:03:10.180 --> 00:03:12.549
and that left elbow tends to bend to
00:03:12.549 --> 00:03:15.790
help out with it so the arms are
00:03:15.790 --> 00:03:18.130
basically initiating the wipe and
00:03:18.130 --> 00:03:21.220
bringing the the club a little bit more
00:03:21.220 --> 00:03:23.260
across his body to allow for the side
00:03:23.260 --> 00:03:23.650
Bend
00:03:23.650 --> 00:03:27.700
now what you'll see is through impact
00:03:27.700 --> 00:03:30.669
he'll then go back to straightening and
00:03:30.669 --> 00:03:34.450
rotating those arms so he gets into a
00:03:34.450 --> 00:03:37.780
very classic looking arm extension
00:03:37.780 --> 00:03:39.130
position here in the follow-through
00:03:39.130 --> 00:03:42.010
really good bracing position powered the
00:03:42.010 --> 00:03:43.650
swing with his legs in his core
00:03:43.650 --> 00:03:46.799
everything looks great at this position
00:03:46.799 --> 00:03:49.359
but there are a lot of details that can
00:03:49.359 --> 00:03:51.549
get lost when we're looking at this
00:03:51.549 --> 00:03:55.419
release from the face on view you can
00:03:55.419 --> 00:03:58.419
see the similar pattern so you can look
00:03:58.419 --> 00:04:00.160
at that left elbow and you can see that
00:04:00.160 --> 00:04:02.319
as it comes through there's what I call
00:04:02.319 --> 00:04:04.750
a little left arm whip where the left
00:04:04.750 --> 00:04:08.220
arm is going to Bend as it initiated
00:04:08.220 --> 00:04:10.959
straighten through the release that's a
00:04:10.959 --> 00:04:14.519
classic combination of golfers who have
00:04:14.519 --> 00:04:17.560
low body weight and high club head speed
00:04:17.560 --> 00:04:21.190
so we can look and see guys like Charles
00:04:21.190 --> 00:04:23.289
Howell guys like Rory McIlroy guys like
00:04:23.289 --> 00:04:26.100
Sergio Garcia do really well with
00:04:26.100 --> 00:04:28.950
bending of the lead arm as they initiate
00:04:28.950 --> 00:04:31.200
the wipe and then straightening of that
00:04:31.200 --> 00:04:33.690
lead arm as the club works through the
00:04:33.690 --> 00:04:37.170
release here are two of those golfers so
00:04:37.170 --> 00:04:38.640
we have Rory on the left and you'll see
00:04:38.640 --> 00:04:40.800
that left elbow Bend through there and
00:04:40.800 --> 00:04:44.190
then straighten through there so with
00:04:44.190 --> 00:04:47.190
speed you can see or if I scrub back and
00:04:47.190 --> 00:04:49.470
forth you can see a little almost whip
00:04:49.470 --> 00:04:51.810
activity happening in the left elbow and
00:04:51.810 --> 00:04:54.090
left shoulder we'll see the same thing
00:04:54.090 --> 00:04:57.300
if we look at Sergio so the lean arm is
00:04:57.300 --> 00:05:00.150
pretty much locked at this point it will
00:05:00.150 --> 00:05:02.040
Bend and then it will straighten and
00:05:02.040 --> 00:05:04.470
you'll see that elbow or the space
00:05:04.470 --> 00:05:08.610
between his elbow and ribcage kind of
00:05:08.610 --> 00:05:11.400
decrease through impact so it wipes
00:05:11.400 --> 00:05:12.990
across which increases and then it
00:05:12.990 --> 00:05:16.380
releases or straightens through impact
00:05:16.380 --> 00:05:19.050
with that little decrease move it is
00:05:19.050 --> 00:05:22.110
very hard to do that movement with any
00:05:22.110 --> 00:05:24.360
amount of arm tension if all the muscles
00:05:24.360 --> 00:05:26.310
in the forearm and shoulders are very
00:05:26.310 --> 00:05:29.250
tense in an effort to hold the clubface
00:05:29.250 --> 00:05:31.380
in a certain orientation you're going to
00:05:31.380 --> 00:05:33.480
have a lot of trouble having some of
00:05:33.480 --> 00:05:36.120
these fluid movements that add speed and
00:05:36.120 --> 00:05:39.180
help control the low point so one of the
00:05:39.180 --> 00:05:41.370
other little oddities of looking at his
00:05:41.370 --> 00:05:42.960
release that would be hard to do with
00:05:42.960 --> 00:05:45.360
our attention is you'll see that his
00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:47.400
hands actually change on the grip during
00:05:47.400 --> 00:05:51.000
the swing so on the right you have this
00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:54.060
the same video clip at setup as we have
00:05:54.060 --> 00:05:56.760
here at impact so if we look at the
00:05:56.760 --> 00:05:58.770
amount of flexion in that lead wrist and
00:05:58.770 --> 00:06:02.250
the where the V on his right hand is
00:06:02.250 --> 00:06:04.260
pointing you can see the V on the right
00:06:04.260 --> 00:06:06.150
hand is pointing in a similar
00:06:06.150 --> 00:06:08.130
orientation kind of straight up towards
00:06:08.130 --> 00:06:10.760
the sky but you'll see that he has a
00:06:10.760 --> 00:06:14.160
much greater amount of flexion in the
00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:17.970
left hand at impact over here than he
00:06:17.970 --> 00:06:20.490
did at setup here we'll be able to see
00:06:20.490 --> 00:06:21.900
some of this movement a little bit
00:06:21.900 --> 00:06:24.540
easier from the down-the-line view so
00:06:24.540 --> 00:06:26.460
from the down-the-line view you'll see
00:06:26.460 --> 00:06:28.620
as he goes through impact you can see
00:06:28.620 --> 00:06:30.870
that right hand coming off the club
00:06:30.870 --> 00:06:34.770
similar to a V J or similar to a Fred
00:06:34.770 --> 00:06:36.870
Couples or Phil Mickelson type movement
00:06:36.870 --> 00:06:39.720
so what we've seen now is the
00:06:39.720 --> 00:06:42.350
Louie who has this classic golf swing
00:06:42.350 --> 00:06:45.960
bends and flexes his left elbow and his
00:06:45.960 --> 00:06:48.000
hands move on the club compared to where
00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:50.160
they were at setup so if you're trying
00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:53.520
to have say constant grip pressure and
00:06:53.520 --> 00:06:55.560
hold your hands exactly the same way
00:06:55.560 --> 00:06:58.140
that may require too much grip pressure
00:06:58.140 --> 00:07:00.630
to swing the club in an athletic way
00:07:00.630 --> 00:07:03.240
similar to Louie and if you're trying to
00:07:03.240 --> 00:07:05.790
keep that left elbow perfectly straight
00:07:05.790 --> 00:07:08.580
it's going to be very difficult for you
00:07:08.580 --> 00:07:11.400
to have the amount of side bend and the
00:07:11.400 --> 00:07:13.500
amount of arm extension on the way
00:07:13.500 --> 00:07:15.350
through in order to have a release
00:07:15.350 --> 00:07:16.920
similar to Louie
00:07:16.920 --> 00:07:20.370
so one last point about the release and
00:07:20.370 --> 00:07:23.220
similar to a jordan spieth where the
00:07:23.220 --> 00:07:25.710
left arm appears to be bending through
00:07:25.710 --> 00:07:28.200
impact what I want you to see is that
00:07:28.200 --> 00:07:30.960
it's not so much that the arm is bending
00:07:30.960 --> 00:07:32.460
because most of the movement is
00:07:32.460 --> 00:07:35.880
happening in forearm rotation what
00:07:35.880 --> 00:07:37.980
you'll see is that the arm is bent and
00:07:37.980 --> 00:07:40.320
he's having that bent elbow act as a
00:07:40.320 --> 00:07:43.290
stable platform to rotate around this
00:07:43.290 --> 00:07:45.900
will be easiest to see from the behind
00:07:45.900 --> 00:07:49.530
view so from the behind view if that
00:07:49.530 --> 00:07:52.110
lead elbow was really bending
00:07:52.110 --> 00:07:53.940
significantly what we would typically
00:07:53.940 --> 00:07:55.740
see is that elbow would start working
00:07:55.740 --> 00:07:58.680
around his body but what you'll see is
00:07:58.680 --> 00:08:02.190
from from as the elbow starts to appear
00:08:02.190 --> 00:08:03.780
until it reaches that follow-through
00:08:03.780 --> 00:08:06.270
position you'll see that the elbow
00:08:06.270 --> 00:08:09.570
actually rotates and comes off of his
00:08:09.570 --> 00:08:12.780
body towards the target so if he was to
00:08:12.780 --> 00:08:15.270
be if he was bending the arm you would
00:08:15.270 --> 00:08:17.460
either see the hands getting closer to
00:08:17.460 --> 00:08:19.140
the shoulder or the elbow working around
00:08:19.140 --> 00:08:22.620
his side what you'll see instead is that
00:08:22.620 --> 00:08:24.990
the arm is in a bent position but he
00:08:24.990 --> 00:08:27.690
keeps it in that bent position as his
00:08:27.690 --> 00:08:30.390
forearms rotate that's another good sign
00:08:30.390 --> 00:08:34.500
that that Louie is having a relaxed or
00:08:34.500 --> 00:08:36.750
soft arm movement and allowing the
00:08:36.750 --> 00:08:38.820
rotation of forearms to transmit that
00:08:38.820 --> 00:08:40.740
force all the way into his back
00:08:40.740 --> 00:08:43.860
that's a safer way to absorb speed which
00:08:43.860 --> 00:08:45.450
is part of the reason why he's able to
00:08:45.450 --> 00:08:46.950
create the kind of club head speed that
00:08:46.950 --> 00:08:49.640
he's able to do
00:08:49.970 --> 00:08:52.470
so if you want to have a classic swing
00:08:52.470 --> 00:08:54.720
like Louie first thing I would do is I
00:08:54.720 --> 00:08:57.630
would recommend trying or experimenting
00:08:57.630 --> 00:08:59.430
with having your body power to swing and
00:08:59.430 --> 00:09:01.800
having very relaxed arms now if your
00:09:01.800 --> 00:09:05.209
arms are relaxed through impact and you
00:09:05.209 --> 00:09:08.850
struggle with contact issues that
00:09:08.850 --> 00:09:10.620
frequently means that there is more of a
00:09:10.620 --> 00:09:13.110
movement or technical issue not so much
00:09:13.110 --> 00:09:15.990
a timing and tempo issue so if you relax
00:09:15.990 --> 00:09:17.610
your arms and your contact gets worse
00:09:17.610 --> 00:09:20.130
then I would recommend taking a look at
00:09:20.130 --> 00:09:23.040
the drills and concept videos inside the
00:09:23.040 --> 00:09:25.440
membership area golf smart academy under
00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:27.180
the release section to understand
00:09:27.180 --> 00:09:29.430
exactly what each arm needs to be doing
00:09:29.430 --> 00:09:31.500
in order to release the club like Louie
00:09:31.500 --> 00:09:33.740
