Swing Analysis - Old Jack Nicklaus vs Young Jack Nicklaus

As you age, things change within your body. The more you take care of it, the easier it is to keep your golf game. In this video, I show you the things that typically remain unchanged in a golf swing as well as the few thing that change with time. Those things require consistent maintenance in order to keep similar ball striking ability.

00:00:00.030 --> 00:00:02.669
in this analysis video we're gonna take

00:00:02.669 --> 00:00:04.830
a look at the evolution of Jack Nicklaus

00:00:04.830 --> 00:00:08.099
golf swing so I had a student ask a

00:00:08.099 --> 00:00:11.040
question of obviously swings change a

00:00:11.040 --> 00:00:13.530
little bit as you get older our golfers

00:00:13.530 --> 00:00:15.900
pretty much trying to do the same thing

00:00:15.900 --> 00:00:17.940
and just the bodies won't cooperate or

00:00:17.940 --> 00:00:20.520
are they trying to do something

00:00:20.520 --> 00:00:22.740
different because of a changing buck so

00:00:22.740 --> 00:00:24.779
he submitted the this picture and

00:00:24.779 --> 00:00:27.840
basically you can see that the impact

00:00:27.840 --> 00:00:31.349
position looks very different whoa is he

00:00:31.349 --> 00:00:32.579
trying to make a different impact

00:00:32.579 --> 00:00:34.559
position or is it just the same thing on

00:00:34.559 --> 00:00:37.050
a different body I don't know for sure

00:00:37.050 --> 00:00:39.329
what Jack Nicklaus or any of the other

00:00:39.329 --> 00:00:41.760
golfers that I'm going to analyze as

00:00:41.760 --> 00:00:44.730
this evolution kind of series works on I

00:00:44.730 --> 00:00:46.289
don't know exactly what they're thinking

00:00:46.289 --> 00:00:49.920
but I have a few kind of theories as far

00:00:49.920 --> 00:00:52.230
as what stays the same and what changes

00:00:52.230 --> 00:00:55.050
so what we'll take a look at are what

00:00:55.050 --> 00:00:57.030
stays the same which is typically gonna

00:00:57.030 --> 00:01:00.000
be triggers and sequencing and then what

00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:01.620
changes which is typically going to be

00:01:01.620 --> 00:01:04.110
range of motion the steep and shallow

00:01:04.110 --> 00:01:08.880
blend and bracing okay so here we have

00:01:08.880 --> 00:01:11.970
two different iron swings and if we look

00:01:11.970 --> 00:01:14.729
over on the right we can see let's take

00:01:14.729 --> 00:01:16.799
a look at triggers first so you can see

00:01:16.799 --> 00:01:20.189
his little head head cocked off to the

00:01:20.189 --> 00:01:23.450
side and as we go into the takeaway

00:01:23.450 --> 00:01:27.860
you'll see that 30 years later or so

00:01:27.860 --> 00:01:30.659
he's got that little head movement to

00:01:30.659 --> 00:01:34.049
start the program and some similar

00:01:34.049 --> 00:01:36.509
patterning so we can see that he's kind

00:01:36.509 --> 00:01:39.810
of trying to do the same thing now we'll

00:01:39.810 --> 00:01:41.820
see that as he gets towards the top of

00:01:41.820 --> 00:01:44.100
the swing we're gonna notice some pretty

00:01:44.100 --> 00:01:48.720
big differences one we can look at range

00:01:48.720 --> 00:01:52.170
of motion so as we look over here on the

00:01:52.170 --> 00:01:54.149
right we can see that he got his hands

00:01:54.149 --> 00:01:57.890
up a whole lot higher his lower body

00:01:57.890 --> 00:02:00.329
rotated a little bit more maybe not a

00:02:00.329 --> 00:02:02.009
ton more but we can see that there's a

00:02:02.009 --> 00:02:03.990
pretty big difference in the amount of

00:02:03.990 --> 00:02:06.000
turn of his upper body as well as the

00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:07.229
amount of side Bend

00:02:07.229 --> 00:02:10.530
so he's developed some stiffness

00:02:10.530 --> 00:02:14.280
in the spine region and as a result the

00:02:14.280 --> 00:02:17.190
arms are going to not gonna create

00:02:17.190 --> 00:02:20.910
nearly as much depth so since he's

00:02:20.910 --> 00:02:23.520
trying to do the same movement but he

00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:25.709
has a blend of these steeps and shallows

00:02:25.709 --> 00:02:27.090
the way the arms move and the way the

00:02:27.090 --> 00:02:29.940
body moves if you take away some of the

00:02:29.940 --> 00:02:31.650
body movements it's going to change that

00:02:31.650 --> 00:02:35.190
relationship so having that amount of

00:02:35.190 --> 00:02:38.370
rotation and side Bend tends to create

00:02:38.370 --> 00:02:40.680
deeper arms which helps create shallow

00:02:40.680 --> 00:02:45.000
now he also is able to keep his head at

00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:47.130
about the same height so what we'll see

00:02:47.130 --> 00:02:50.880
as we kind of start through transition

00:02:50.880 --> 00:02:53.640
you'll see that his trigger for starting

00:02:53.640 --> 00:02:55.280
the downswing is definitely a lower body

00:02:55.280 --> 00:02:59.100
but we'll see that some of his kind of

00:02:59.100 --> 00:03:01.680
steeps shallow blend is going to be a

00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:03.150
little different you'll see that his

00:03:03.150 --> 00:03:05.220
head stays at about the same height and

00:03:05.220 --> 00:03:07.650
as a result of his head staying about

00:03:07.650 --> 00:03:09.030
the same height you can see that his

00:03:09.030 --> 00:03:11.630
arms do a nice little shallow movement

00:03:11.630 --> 00:03:14.820
there's lots of stories of Jack Nicklaus

00:03:14.820 --> 00:03:16.890
working with his golf instructor and his

00:03:16.890 --> 00:03:19.590
instructor holding his hair to try to

00:03:19.590 --> 00:03:22.470
keep his heads though we can see that he

00:03:22.470 --> 00:03:24.120
did a pretty good job in this particular

00:03:24.120 --> 00:03:26.640
swing of keeping the head kind of at the

00:03:26.640 --> 00:03:30.780
same level now older Jack if he didn't

00:03:30.780 --> 00:03:32.670
have the head on and if his coach had

00:03:32.670 --> 00:03:34.950
been holding his hair you can see he

00:03:34.950 --> 00:03:36.420
would have struggled a little bit there

00:03:36.420 --> 00:03:39.239
in the backswing and we would see that

00:03:39.239 --> 00:03:42.390
he would struggle during the release so

00:03:42.390 --> 00:03:44.970
who knows if that stand up move is just

00:03:44.970 --> 00:03:47.340
part of Jack's natural tendency and so

00:03:47.340 --> 00:03:49.650
his coach helped him to work on his

00:03:49.650 --> 00:03:53.220
pivot control by holding his head and as

00:03:53.220 --> 00:03:55.230
a result of working on the pivot control

00:03:55.230 --> 00:03:57.840
and having holding his head he forced

00:03:57.840 --> 00:04:00.840
himself to learn how to shallow out with

00:04:00.840 --> 00:04:05.070
the arms we can see that if he has a

00:04:05.070 --> 00:04:08.310
slightly steeper arm movement and now

00:04:08.310 --> 00:04:11.519
his body is standing up those two are

00:04:11.519 --> 00:04:13.890
going to balance each other out but it's

00:04:13.890 --> 00:04:17.100
not going to give us quite the same flat

00:04:17.100 --> 00:04:18.290
spot and it's going to

00:04:18.290 --> 00:04:21.020
not allow us to power this wing quite as

00:04:21.020 --> 00:04:24.710
intensely with the body so we'll take a

00:04:24.710 --> 00:04:26.420
look from a different perspective and

00:04:26.420 --> 00:04:28.400
we'll look at the bracing strategy

00:04:28.400 --> 00:04:30.920
that's going to be a result of both the

00:04:30.920 --> 00:04:34.520
path as well as the range of motion and

00:04:34.520 --> 00:04:38.840
the impact conditions that he creates as

00:04:38.840 --> 00:04:42.980
he's evolved his swing over time so

00:04:42.980 --> 00:04:45.050
here's a interesting find we have almost

00:04:45.050 --> 00:04:48.200
the same camera angle but these swings

00:04:48.200 --> 00:04:51.680
are taken about 40 years apart so over

00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:55.130
on the Left we have 2014 the masters and

00:04:55.130 --> 00:04:57.380
over here on the right he was about 30

00:04:57.380 --> 00:05:01.520
in a competition against Lee Trevino so

00:05:01.520 --> 00:05:05.150
if we take a look at the movements to

00:05:05.150 --> 00:05:07.100
the top of the swing again we see that

00:05:07.100 --> 00:05:10.070
same trigger and head movement and we

00:05:10.070 --> 00:05:11.750
can see that it's kind of a similar

00:05:11.750 --> 00:05:13.640
patterning of what he's trying to do but

00:05:13.640 --> 00:05:15.650
it's shortened because of the range of

00:05:15.650 --> 00:05:18.920
motion especially not nearly as much

00:05:18.920 --> 00:05:21.290
back rotation right we can't see nearly

00:05:21.290 --> 00:05:23.090
as much flexibility here in his rib cage

00:05:23.090 --> 00:05:25.100
and that limits his ability to create

00:05:25.100 --> 00:05:28.190
that arm height now what we'll see over

00:05:28.190 --> 00:05:31.610
on the right is a very good sequencing

00:05:31.610 --> 00:05:34.040
getting the lower body to start and then

00:05:34.040 --> 00:05:36.530
he gets well open so when he comes

00:05:36.530 --> 00:05:39.080
through you can see that those arms kind

00:05:39.080 --> 00:05:42.680
of do a really good job of releasing but

00:05:42.680 --> 00:05:44.720
continuing to straighten they don't

00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:47.390
really Bend he gets into some tremendous

00:05:47.390 --> 00:05:51.590
side Bend and rotation positions now as

00:05:51.590 --> 00:05:53.900
you as you get older once you've passed

00:05:53.900 --> 00:05:56.810
about 65 or so you tend to lose about a

00:05:56.810 --> 00:05:59.510
third of the amount of side bending

00:05:59.510 --> 00:06:02.410
movement you can maintain some with

00:06:02.410 --> 00:06:05.330
flexibility and strength training but

00:06:05.330 --> 00:06:07.310
you're going to lose a little bit just

00:06:07.310 --> 00:06:10.010
as the natural degeneration of your

00:06:10.010 --> 00:06:15.890
spine so what we'll see is in 2014 he

00:06:15.890 --> 00:06:18.410
still sequences and still starts with

00:06:18.410 --> 00:06:20.570
his lower body but we know that he

00:06:20.570 --> 00:06:22.580
didn't have as much

00:06:22.580 --> 00:06:26.150
room for his arms because he didn't have

00:06:26.150 --> 00:06:27.889
as much rotation so he didn't creep the

00:06:27.889 --> 00:06:30.439
shallow depth that comes from rotation

00:06:30.439 --> 00:06:34.099
to the right so even though he sequence

00:06:34.099 --> 00:06:37.550
his lower body first and then his arms

00:06:37.550 --> 00:06:39.620
because his arms are going from a

00:06:39.620 --> 00:06:41.900
steeper position he uses more vertical

00:06:41.900 --> 00:06:43.550
body movement and not quite as much

00:06:43.550 --> 00:06:45.650
rotation so he's not gonna get nearly as

00:06:45.650 --> 00:06:50.060
open as he did over here on the right in

00:06:50.060 --> 00:06:53.539
his prime and so as a result you'll see

00:06:53.539 --> 00:06:56.960
as he comes through less body and

00:06:56.960 --> 00:06:58.969
steeper arm movement is usually going to

00:06:58.969 --> 00:07:01.520
result in those arms bending sooner so

00:07:01.520 --> 00:07:04.159
you'll see that as he goes through that

00:07:04.159 --> 00:07:08.180
left arm starts bending pretty much

00:07:08.180 --> 00:07:11.300
right after impact where if we scrub

00:07:11.300 --> 00:07:13.639
through those frames back and forth over

00:07:13.639 --> 00:07:16.840
here because he's doing more of that

00:07:16.840 --> 00:07:19.370
bracing movement with his lower body his

00:07:19.370 --> 00:07:21.169
upper body's in a better position he's

00:07:21.169 --> 00:07:23.810
able to really extend those arms have a

00:07:23.810 --> 00:07:26.719
really solid release so there's

00:07:26.719 --> 00:07:29.120
obviously been some changes over the

00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:31.669
40-year period but I'm gonna show you

00:07:31.669 --> 00:07:34.400
what's interesting is if we look at just

00:07:34.400 --> 00:07:36.979
this three-year period between two of

00:07:36.979 --> 00:07:39.259
his ceremonial first tee shots we can

00:07:39.259 --> 00:07:41.779
see a little bit of change so over here

00:07:41.779 --> 00:07:44.029
on the Left we have Jack Nicklaus in

00:07:44.029 --> 00:07:46.039
2011 and over here on the right we have

00:07:46.039 --> 00:07:50.029
Jack Nicklaus in 2014 so it's only three

00:07:50.029 --> 00:07:53.300
years apart he's 71 in on the left and

00:07:53.300 --> 00:07:57.379
74 on the right so the the age

00:07:57.379 --> 00:08:00.110
difference isn't that great but we can

00:08:00.110 --> 00:08:03.319
see that there in the span of a few

00:08:03.319 --> 00:08:07.940
years we can see some changes starting

00:08:07.940 --> 00:08:11.210
to kind of take place it's not a great

00:08:11.210 --> 00:08:15.139
frame rate but if we scrub back and

00:08:15.139 --> 00:08:17.150
forth we can kind of see the amount of

00:08:17.150 --> 00:08:21.139
body movement over on the right we'll

00:08:21.139 --> 00:08:24.910
see a little bit less kind

00:08:24.910 --> 00:08:27.370
of coure and hip movement where this

00:08:27.370 --> 00:08:30.130
will really show up will be in the

00:08:30.130 --> 00:08:31.900
follow-through strategy or the bracing

00:08:31.900 --> 00:08:35.099
strategy so he does a little bit more

00:08:35.099 --> 00:08:38.500
lower body initiation of his transition

00:08:38.500 --> 00:08:41.110
and so as he comes through you can you

00:08:41.110 --> 00:08:43.060
can see that left arm staying mostly

00:08:43.060 --> 00:08:45.730
straight as it kind of works with the

00:08:45.730 --> 00:08:51.730
body rotation now over here just three

00:08:51.730 --> 00:08:55.120
years later we can see that as he comes

00:08:55.120 --> 00:08:57.100
through because he doesn't have nearly

00:08:57.100 --> 00:09:00.190
the amount of body rotation you can

00:09:00.190 --> 00:09:02.500
almost assume that he was in a steeper

00:09:02.500 --> 00:09:04.960
position and we can see that that lead

00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:07.690
arm just starts bending almost instantly

00:09:07.690 --> 00:09:11.080
through impact so while he's well his

00:09:11.080 --> 00:09:13.450
brain is trying to power the swing and

00:09:13.450 --> 00:09:16.390
kind of control the path in a similar

00:09:16.390 --> 00:09:20.410
way because of the path relationship and

00:09:20.410 --> 00:09:22.570
how it's working with his body he's

00:09:22.570 --> 00:09:25.720
absorbing the speed differently in these

00:09:25.720 --> 00:09:29.950
two frames or in these two swings so one

00:09:29.950 --> 00:09:31.300
of the one of the things that we'll see

00:09:31.300 --> 00:09:32.860
from some of the other examples is if

00:09:32.860 --> 00:09:34.360
you're able to maintain some of your

00:09:34.360 --> 00:09:36.550
flexibility and strength it's going to

00:09:36.550 --> 00:09:40.260
be a lot easier for you to maintain a

00:09:40.260 --> 00:09:43.080
more similar swing and kind of have it

00:09:43.080 --> 00:09:46.300
deteriorate slower but what will happen

00:09:46.300 --> 00:09:48.460
is if you if you get stiffer and you're

00:09:48.460 --> 00:09:50.350
not able to create the rotational depth

00:09:50.350 --> 00:09:53.590
of during the backswing we will tend to

00:09:53.590 --> 00:09:56.080
get steeper with our arm movements which

00:09:56.080 --> 00:09:58.390
then causes more of a body stand-up move

00:09:58.390 --> 00:10:01.660
and less of that body rotation move if

00:10:01.660 --> 00:10:03.430
you want to understand your swing and

00:10:03.430 --> 00:10:04.570
you want to understand the different

00:10:04.570 --> 00:10:06.730
pieces of takeaway setting the club

00:10:06.730 --> 00:10:09.430
transition the release and what to look

00:10:09.430 --> 00:10:11.470
for in this bracing strategy that I'm

00:10:11.470 --> 00:10:12.250
talking about
