While Masters Champion Patrick Reed may have a few idiosyncrasies to his swing, he does do an excellent job of controlling his path (using different parts of his body) to produce a consistent draw. If you struggle with getting your arms to flatten and shallow the club in transition, then be sure to pay attention to this breakdown to understand how and why Patrick does this so well.

00:00:01.460 --> 00:00:04.080
in this analysis video we're gonna take
00:00:04.080 --> 00:00:06.569
a look at Patrick Reed now Patrick Reed
00:00:06.569 --> 00:00:08.940
is one of the young stars on tour he is
00:00:08.940 --> 00:00:11.040
currently fourth in the FedEx Cup and
00:00:11.040 --> 00:00:14.269
fifteenth in the world ranking and he is
00:00:14.269 --> 00:00:16.949
20th in strokes gained tee to green and
00:00:16.949 --> 00:00:19.170
21st in stirrups game pudding so he's
00:00:19.170 --> 00:00:21.210
got a pretty good well-rounded game but
00:00:21.210 --> 00:00:22.470
we're gonna talk about some of the
00:00:22.470 --> 00:00:24.480
idiosyncrasies of his swing and how they
00:00:24.480 --> 00:00:26.369
help explain some of his driving
00:00:26.369 --> 00:00:28.800
accuracy problems and why he's such a
00:00:28.800 --> 00:00:32.040
good bunker player so stay tuned we're
00:00:32.040 --> 00:00:33.930
gonna take a look at what makes his
00:00:33.930 --> 00:00:35.670
swing work and how you can apply some of
00:00:35.670 --> 00:00:40.649
it to your own game when I do these
00:00:40.649 --> 00:00:43.200
analysis I think it's important that we
00:00:43.200 --> 00:00:45.539
focus on the things that kind of look
00:00:45.539 --> 00:00:47.850
weird or the idiosyncrasies of his swing
00:00:47.850 --> 00:00:49.410
and talking about why they work because
00:00:49.410 --> 00:00:51.390
all of these tour golfers are going to
00:00:51.390 --> 00:00:53.820
have pretty good swing paths pretty good
00:00:53.820 --> 00:00:55.680
face control you know compared to the
00:00:55.680 --> 00:00:57.420
average golfer they're gonna have very
00:00:57.420 --> 00:00:59.100
good sequencing there's gonna be a lot
00:00:59.100 --> 00:01:01.859
more similarities so when we start with
00:01:01.859 --> 00:01:03.719
Patrick Reed we're gonna look at the
00:01:03.719 --> 00:01:05.790
transition and the release because
00:01:05.790 --> 00:01:08.010
that's where we see a lot of the the
00:01:08.010 --> 00:01:10.439
weird moves one of my favorite lines is
00:01:10.439 --> 00:01:12.630
what looks weird and what is this doing
00:01:12.630 --> 00:01:14.729
for the golfer so if we take a look at
00:01:14.729 --> 00:01:17.310
the face on view you'll see that the
00:01:17.310 --> 00:01:18.630
first thing that looks weird in his
00:01:18.630 --> 00:01:21.960
transition is his right leg tends to
00:01:21.960 --> 00:01:24.780
straighten and his left foot tends to
00:01:24.780 --> 00:01:28.080
replant in a more closed position so
00:01:28.080 --> 00:01:29.880
here he was at the top of the swing and
00:01:29.880 --> 00:01:32.670
you can see that his lead foot was
00:01:32.670 --> 00:01:35.220
pointed slightly out that way and then a
00:01:35.220 --> 00:01:37.110
few frames later it's pointed pretty
00:01:37.110 --> 00:01:39.720
much at the golf ball now during the
00:01:39.720 --> 00:01:42.710
release what's gonna look weird is that
00:01:42.710 --> 00:01:46.470
he's going to basically have that left
00:01:46.470 --> 00:01:50.579
foot spin and moved behind him as he
00:01:50.579 --> 00:01:51.780
releases the club
00:01:51.780 --> 00:01:54.869
so from this face on view it's a little
00:01:54.869 --> 00:01:56.369
better frame rate you'll be able to see
00:01:56.369 --> 00:01:57.719
there's that straightening of the leg
00:01:57.719 --> 00:01:59.670
he's replanting his foot in a little bit
00:01:59.670 --> 00:02:01.979
more closed positioned and then as he
00:02:01.979 --> 00:02:03.630
comes down and through the release you
00:02:03.630 --> 00:02:04.460
can watch
00:02:04.460 --> 00:02:07.979
there's his the toe of his left foot and
00:02:07.979 --> 00:02:10.539
as he comes through you can see that
00:02:10.539 --> 00:02:12.099
the toe of his left foot is now
00:02:12.099 --> 00:02:15.939
somewhere back there so why would this
00:02:15.939 --> 00:02:18.519
golfer have this little replanting with
00:02:18.519 --> 00:02:20.409
the feet and then change of movement
00:02:20.409 --> 00:02:22.750
during the release that's what we're
00:02:22.750 --> 00:02:25.239
gonna discuss so that you can understand
00:02:25.239 --> 00:02:28.239
how he is able to get the club to swing
00:02:28.239 --> 00:02:32.290
the way that he does so if we jump back
00:02:32.290 --> 00:02:34.810
to transition and we look at the engine
00:02:34.810 --> 00:02:36.730
of his swing you can see that his lower
00:02:36.730 --> 00:02:39.549
body tends to rotate relatively quickly
00:02:39.549 --> 00:02:42.879
and compared to his left foot he doesn't
00:02:42.879 --> 00:02:45.549
seem to have very much lateral movement
00:02:45.549 --> 00:02:49.690
of the lower body so from the from the
00:02:49.690 --> 00:02:51.760
down-the-line view that would give the
00:02:51.760 --> 00:02:53.680
appearance that his hips are gonna be
00:02:53.680 --> 00:02:57.790
more level here than you know someone
00:02:57.790 --> 00:03:00.579
who has a little bit more of the access
00:03:00.579 --> 00:03:03.909
tilt or hip slide so there's a couple
00:03:03.909 --> 00:03:06.420
reasons that he might be doing that but
00:03:06.420 --> 00:03:09.310
one of the most likely is if we take a
00:03:09.310 --> 00:03:13.750
look at the face on when he when he does
00:03:13.750 --> 00:03:17.739
this little hip rotation move we'll see
00:03:17.739 --> 00:03:19.419
in a later video that he's gonna be
00:03:19.419 --> 00:03:21.489
shallowing out the club with his arms a
00:03:21.489 --> 00:03:24.549
pretty good amount so in order to get
00:03:24.549 --> 00:03:26.650
the the path right he's gonna have to
00:03:26.650 --> 00:03:28.660
have a certain amount of steeps and a
00:03:28.660 --> 00:03:30.220
certain amount of shallows now because
00:03:30.220 --> 00:03:32.889
his upper body is pretty much on top of
00:03:32.889 --> 00:03:35.319
his lower body that's going to
00:03:35.319 --> 00:03:37.480
inherently add a little bit of a steep
00:03:37.480 --> 00:03:40.599
so in order to prevent that he's gonna
00:03:40.599 --> 00:03:43.209
keep or I guess in order to balance that
00:03:43.209 --> 00:03:45.519
he's gonna keep more of his mass in his
00:03:45.519 --> 00:03:47.980
upper body behind the golf ball now
00:03:47.980 --> 00:03:51.519
because of that the left foot is basic
00:03:51.519 --> 00:03:53.260
or though yeah the left foot is going to
00:03:53.260 --> 00:03:55.989
be more unweighted at impact and it's
00:03:55.989 --> 00:03:59.019
gonna have freedom to kind of slide and
00:03:59.019 --> 00:04:02.139
rotate as he goes through now the one of
00:04:02.139 --> 00:04:04.150
the questions is always well why doesn't
00:04:04.150 --> 00:04:06.760
he have more of this lateral movement so
00:04:06.760 --> 00:04:09.099
that he would have more of a look like
00:04:09.099 --> 00:04:11.349
that as he came into the ball instead of
00:04:11.349 --> 00:04:14.919
straight up and down well part of what I
00:04:14.919 --> 00:04:17.859
see going on with his movement is when
00:04:17.859 --> 00:04:21.889
he if he was more side bent here
00:04:21.889 --> 00:04:23.389
we're looking at this down the line if
00:04:23.389 --> 00:04:24.949
he was Morse I'd been hearing he had a
00:04:24.949 --> 00:04:27.530
little bit more of that hip bump then in
00:04:27.530 --> 00:04:29.629
order to have the same path he would
00:04:29.629 --> 00:04:31.669
have to have the the arms work a little
00:04:31.669 --> 00:04:34.340
bit more across his body the white
00:04:34.340 --> 00:04:36.770
movement that we described on our site
00:04:36.770 --> 00:04:41.270
now Patrick Reed is one of the larger
00:04:41.270 --> 00:04:42.620
golfer and he's got a little bit more
00:04:42.620 --> 00:04:44.689
mass in his stomach and so that white
00:04:44.689 --> 00:04:47.029
movement would be very very difficult so
00:04:47.029 --> 00:04:49.610
you will tend to see with golfers who
00:04:49.610 --> 00:04:51.319
are a little bit stockier like this that
00:04:51.319 --> 00:04:53.240
they're gonna have more of a rotational
00:04:53.240 --> 00:04:55.340
movement and not take advantage of some
00:04:55.340 --> 00:04:58.939
of the lower body translations now part
00:04:58.939 --> 00:05:02.599
of that will show up in his some of his
00:05:02.599 --> 00:05:06.229
statistics so he is currently a hundred
00:05:06.229 --> 00:05:10.159
90th in driving accuracy and when it
00:05:10.159 --> 00:05:11.840
comes to Club that speed he's twenty
00:05:11.840 --> 00:05:13.639
ninth but his total rank in distance is
00:05:13.639 --> 00:05:15.949
73rd so there are a number of guys who
00:05:15.949 --> 00:05:17.900
don't swing the club as fast as he does
00:05:17.900 --> 00:05:20.569
but getting more out of it as far as the
00:05:20.569 --> 00:05:22.729
launch characteristics and part of that
00:05:22.729 --> 00:05:24.740
is going to be because of this lack of
00:05:24.740 --> 00:05:27.710
tilt and how that relates to the longer
00:05:27.710 --> 00:05:29.659
swing but that's also part of the reason
00:05:29.659 --> 00:05:33.139
why he does pretty well with the the
00:05:33.139 --> 00:05:35.810
wedges his iron ranking is higher than
00:05:35.810 --> 00:05:39.319
his driver ranking so he would fit into
00:05:39.319 --> 00:05:42.979
more of a stacked type swing not stuck
00:05:42.979 --> 00:05:44.719
in told but stack doesn't his upper body
00:05:44.719 --> 00:05:46.669
is more on top of his lower body doesn't
00:05:46.669 --> 00:05:48.560
have a huge amount of that access though
00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:51.770
so he's gonna struggle a little bit with
00:05:51.770 --> 00:05:53.569
the path with the driver as well as
00:05:53.569 --> 00:05:56.089
maximizing his distance now let's talk a
00:05:56.089 --> 00:05:59.330
little bit about how he shallows the
00:05:59.330 --> 00:06:00.919
club during transition because I think
00:06:00.919 --> 00:06:02.330
that's one of the key movements that
00:06:02.330 --> 00:06:05.509
makes him one of the more promising
00:06:05.509 --> 00:06:08.810
rising stuff so here we have a great
00:06:08.810 --> 00:06:11.599
close up with a good frame rate of
00:06:11.599 --> 00:06:14.750
Patrick Reed going into his transition
00:06:14.750 --> 00:06:16.759
so we know that the lower body is gonna
00:06:16.759 --> 00:06:19.129
do a little straightening pivot move but
00:06:19.129 --> 00:06:21.259
what I want you to look at is I want you
00:06:21.259 --> 00:06:23.689
to look at the movement of his arms and
00:06:23.689 --> 00:06:26.180
shoulders so just that's a reference
00:06:26.180 --> 00:06:28.129
line not giving you any amount that you
00:06:28.129 --> 00:06:30.169
should be striving for you can see where
00:06:30.169 --> 00:06:32.629
he has the club there now as he starts
00:06:32.629 --> 00:06:34.120
going up towards the
00:06:34.120 --> 00:06:36.040
as he's ending his backswing and kind of
00:06:36.040 --> 00:06:39.010
starting transition you'll see that the
00:06:39.010 --> 00:06:41.290
the club has already started to shallow
00:06:41.290 --> 00:06:43.690
out slightly and now as he starts down
00:06:43.690 --> 00:06:46.270
you can see that it's shallowing out
00:06:46.270 --> 00:06:48.580
even more so one of the things that we
00:06:48.580 --> 00:06:50.110
talked about with the arm shallowing is
00:06:50.110 --> 00:06:52.479
this difference between the club moving
00:06:52.479 --> 00:06:55.210
or the grip of the club moving straight
00:06:55.210 --> 00:07:00.729
down versus moving more out you can see
00:07:00.729 --> 00:07:03.750
that Patrick does a great job in
00:07:03.750 --> 00:07:06.280
transition of getting the club to
00:07:06.280 --> 00:07:09.940
shallow and move more out so now because
00:07:09.940 --> 00:07:12.639
he has the arms and a very good shallow
00:07:12.639 --> 00:07:15.100
position he can get away with having his
00:07:15.100 --> 00:07:16.750
body and a little bit more steep or a
00:07:16.750 --> 00:07:19.960
little bit more stacked version and just
00:07:19.960 --> 00:07:21.669
rotate around because most of the
00:07:21.669 --> 00:07:24.460
shallowing has happened from the arms
00:07:24.460 --> 00:07:26.320
with a little bit of shadowing happening
00:07:26.320 --> 00:07:30.100
from the body backing up now that's also
00:07:30.100 --> 00:07:31.690
part of the reason why he appears to
00:07:31.690 --> 00:07:35.530
have that that stall through impact to
00:07:35.530 --> 00:07:37.690
allow the the clubs that kind of tumble
00:07:37.690 --> 00:07:40.690
and catch up but the the shallow piece
00:07:40.690 --> 00:07:42.070
that he does in transition is really
00:07:42.070 --> 00:07:43.930
beautiful and part of the reason why I
00:07:43.930 --> 00:07:46.479
think he has had the success that he has
00:07:46.479 --> 00:07:51.280
had but that's also part of the reason
00:07:51.280 --> 00:07:54.460
why he's able to hit the ball with this
00:07:54.460 --> 00:07:56.590
much curve or as much draw as he tends
00:07:56.590 --> 00:08:00.130
to so it's one of those catch-22 or I
00:08:00.130 --> 00:08:02.050
guess one of those trade-offs of how
00:08:02.050 --> 00:08:04.419
much you want to draw the ball how much
00:08:04.419 --> 00:08:06.880
you want to have the ability to shape
00:08:06.880 --> 00:08:09.880
your shots Patrick Reed has his pattern
00:08:09.880 --> 00:08:11.410
figured out and he knows it very very
00:08:11.410 --> 00:08:16.090
