Ricky Fowler has made big changes to his swing in the last few years. He has improved his takeaway and release pattern - which both help his overall ball striking.
The biggest change is in his sequencing. Rickie has improved the use of his core through his swing which helps make his overall positions much improved.
His swing is frequently compared to Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy, but you’ll see in this analysis that Rickie’s swing is very different from those two golfers.

00:00:00.030 --> 00:00:02.760
in this analysis video we take a look at
00:00:02.760 --> 00:00:04.380
the swing of Rickie Fowler
00:00:04.380 --> 00:00:06.089
now Rickie Fowler has made some pretty
00:00:06.089 --> 00:00:08.550
big swing changes under the tutelage of
00:00:08.550 --> 00:00:11.700
Butch Harmon he's played really well the
00:00:11.700 --> 00:00:13.230
last couple years and so it's no wonder
00:00:13.230 --> 00:00:14.880
that a lot of students have some
00:00:14.880 --> 00:00:17.190
questions about what swing changes he's
00:00:17.190 --> 00:00:19.890
made and why they've been so helpful so
00:00:19.890 --> 00:00:21.330
in this video we're going to take a look
00:00:21.330 --> 00:00:23.670
at them one major swing change that he
00:00:23.670 --> 00:00:26.279
is made with the help of Butch Harmon as
00:00:26.279 --> 00:00:28.470
well as his fitness trainer but then
00:00:28.470 --> 00:00:30.359
we'll highlight a couple of the other
00:00:30.359 --> 00:00:32.340
things such as how his swing is
00:00:32.340 --> 00:00:35.010
typically compared to both Sergio Garcia
00:00:35.010 --> 00:00:39.629
for this lay down move as well as Rory
00:00:39.629 --> 00:00:42.930
McIlroy for his right leg straightening
00:00:42.930 --> 00:00:45.300
and almost reversed hip thrusts I'm
00:00:45.300 --> 00:00:46.950
gonna help you understand that what he
00:00:46.950 --> 00:00:48.420
does is very different from those two
00:00:48.420 --> 00:00:50.309
golfers as well as helping you
00:00:50.309 --> 00:00:52.590
understand how sequencing has played a
00:00:52.590 --> 00:00:54.840
big role in his improvement under Butch
00:00:54.840 --> 00:00:58.079
Harmon now sequencing is one of those
00:00:58.079 --> 00:01:00.030
kind of catch-all buzzwords that we like
00:01:00.030 --> 00:01:03.000
to use to relate to how one body segment
00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:05.700
is interacting with another so the big
00:01:05.700 --> 00:01:08.820
area where Ricky tended to struggle was
00:01:08.820 --> 00:01:11.070
in using the muscles between his rib
00:01:11.070 --> 00:01:13.920
cage and pelvis so over here on the left
00:01:13.920 --> 00:01:17.159
is a close-up video from 2010 and then
00:01:17.159 --> 00:01:19.080
over here on the right is a close-up
00:01:19.080 --> 00:01:23.250
video from last fall now we can see that
00:01:23.250 --> 00:01:24.750
the take away positions are very
00:01:24.750 --> 00:01:26.549
different the forum relationships are
00:01:26.549 --> 00:01:30.090
very different we can also see that he's
00:01:30.090 --> 00:01:32.790
over on the right Ricky has a little bit
00:01:32.790 --> 00:01:35.670
more muscle mass he he worked out pretty
00:01:35.670 --> 00:01:37.020
hard when he started working with Butch
00:01:37.020 --> 00:01:41.369
Harmon and that can be contributing to
00:01:41.369 --> 00:01:42.960
what he's able to do with his core
00:01:42.960 --> 00:01:45.060
because here's what we want to see in
00:01:45.060 --> 00:01:47.729
transition and this is the movement that
00:01:47.729 --> 00:01:52.110
I think a lot of golfers amateur as well
00:01:52.110 --> 00:01:54.600
as some professionals miss out on and
00:01:54.600 --> 00:01:56.009
that is connecting the pelvis to a
00:01:56.009 --> 00:01:59.189
ribcage so as we look through and as we
00:01:59.189 --> 00:02:00.750
scrub through back and forth in
00:02:00.750 --> 00:02:03.119
transition what you'll see is that his
00:02:03.119 --> 00:02:06.149
pelvis is leaving behind his upper body
00:02:06.149 --> 00:02:08.399
so if you look at kind of this area
00:02:08.399 --> 00:02:11.849
right in here that's close to the bottom
00:02:11.849 --> 00:02:13.470
of his ribcage even now
00:02:13.470 --> 00:02:15.510
there that's close to the bottom of his
00:02:15.510 --> 00:02:18.360
ribcage and close to his lap muscle so
00:02:18.360 --> 00:02:22.050
what you'll see is his pelvis rotates
00:02:22.050 --> 00:02:24.360
away from that part and you'll see that
00:02:24.360 --> 00:02:27.060
there's not a ton of rotation happening
00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:30.480
it's a little bit more of a side Bend
00:02:30.480 --> 00:02:34.710
movement so there is some rotation but
00:02:34.710 --> 00:02:36.510
you'll see that the dominant movement is
00:02:36.510 --> 00:02:38.580
going to be more with that side Bend and
00:02:38.580 --> 00:02:40.500
it's not until he gets down to right
00:02:40.500 --> 00:02:43.020
around here that his rib cage really
00:02:43.020 --> 00:02:47.990
starts rotating we're in his new version
00:02:47.990 --> 00:02:51.270
what you'll see is his pelvis is still
00:02:51.270 --> 00:02:53.820
going to start a little bit before his
00:02:53.820 --> 00:02:56.820
lower body which it's good for it to
00:02:56.820 --> 00:02:59.940
start before the upper body for the
00:02:59.940 --> 00:03:01.380
lower body to start before the upper
00:03:01.380 --> 00:03:03.420
body but you want to make sure that that
00:03:03.420 --> 00:03:05.459
rotational movement of the lower body is
00:03:05.459 --> 00:03:07.260
transferred or connected to the rib cage
00:03:07.260 --> 00:03:10.860
so what you'll see in the more recent
00:03:10.860 --> 00:03:14.790
swings is you'll see that this part of
00:03:14.790 --> 00:03:19.190
his rib cage is rotating much sooner
00:03:19.190 --> 00:03:22.680
than where he was back here six years
00:03:22.680 --> 00:03:26.280
ago again back six years ago he had a
00:03:26.280 --> 00:03:28.860
little bit more of a side bend movement
00:03:28.860 --> 00:03:31.650
where now he's having more of that
00:03:31.650 --> 00:03:34.170
rotational swing activated and that
00:03:34.170 --> 00:03:37.370
rotational sling is going to help
00:03:37.370 --> 00:03:40.140
steepen the path of the club so yes his
00:03:40.140 --> 00:03:42.900
arms are in a better position at the top
00:03:42.900 --> 00:03:45.269
of the swing but the relationship
00:03:45.269 --> 00:03:47.400
between the arms in the upper body looks
00:03:47.400 --> 00:03:49.530
even better during the downswing because
00:03:49.530 --> 00:03:51.450
he has included more of this upper body
00:03:51.450 --> 00:03:54.959
rotation if he didn't rotate his body
00:03:54.959 --> 00:03:57.720
then the side Bend movement that you
00:03:57.720 --> 00:04:00.080
would tend to see is going to rely on
00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:03.120
more of an arm pull as a power source
00:04:03.120 --> 00:04:05.459
where over here on the right he's going
00:04:05.459 --> 00:04:06.870
to be using a little bit more of his
00:04:06.870 --> 00:04:09.480
total body to speed up the the club head
00:04:09.480 --> 00:04:12.780
as a result of having that body power
00:04:12.780 --> 00:04:15.600
that downswing now we're going to see
00:04:15.600 --> 00:04:18.690
that his arms are able to work a little
00:04:18.690 --> 00:04:20.640
bit more left and he's a look he's able
00:04:20.640 --> 00:04:23.849
to have more body rotation through the
00:04:23.849 --> 00:04:26.639
shot we're over here on the
00:04:26.639 --> 00:04:30.419
on the left he's got less of the body
00:04:30.419 --> 00:04:32.909
rotation so his hands work a little bit
00:04:32.909 --> 00:04:35.099
more out to the right through the
00:04:35.099 --> 00:04:38.969
release one key takeaway for you is if
00:04:38.969 --> 00:04:40.580
you look at a down-the-line video
00:04:40.580 --> 00:04:43.229
looking at where your upper body is and
00:04:43.229 --> 00:04:45.300
looking at where your arms are those are
00:04:45.300 --> 00:04:47.039
the two factors that are going to relate
00:04:47.039 --> 00:04:48.990
to where your hands are going to move
00:04:48.990 --> 00:04:50.340
through the ball are they going to move
00:04:50.340 --> 00:04:51.870
out towards the target line or are they
00:04:51.870 --> 00:04:54.449
going to move left following your body
00:04:54.449 --> 00:04:57.719
if they move left and and the arms are
00:04:57.719 --> 00:04:59.370
straightening then the only thing that's
00:04:59.370 --> 00:05:01.620
going to be pulling them left will be
00:05:01.620 --> 00:05:09.029
body rotation of the ribcage golfers are
00:05:09.029 --> 00:05:11.340
always compared to each other and one of
00:05:11.340 --> 00:05:13.680
the golfers who Riki is frequently
00:05:13.680 --> 00:05:15.870
compared to is Sergio especially in
00:05:15.870 --> 00:05:19.770
transition now probably less so with
00:05:19.770 --> 00:05:22.949
more with his more modern move that
00:05:22.949 --> 00:05:25.139
doesn't have quite as much of the arm
00:05:25.139 --> 00:05:28.949
drop but what you'll see is that his
00:05:28.949 --> 00:05:30.930
movement in transition is actually quite
00:05:30.930 --> 00:05:33.150
different from Sergio's if we look at
00:05:33.150 --> 00:05:35.009
the body movement of Sergio you'll see
00:05:35.009 --> 00:05:38.279
that if we had a kind of imaginary wall
00:05:38.279 --> 00:05:40.289
right here you'll see that his upper
00:05:40.289 --> 00:05:42.330
body and his head are working down this
00:05:42.330 --> 00:05:44.219
way and then he's having a lot of
00:05:44.219 --> 00:05:47.360
shallowing movement with the lead form
00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:50.550
so as we go through transition you'll
00:05:50.550 --> 00:05:52.919
see that his upper body works down his
00:05:52.919 --> 00:05:55.919
rib cage works down and he creates all
00:05:55.919 --> 00:05:57.509
of a shallow a movement with what he's
00:05:57.509 --> 00:05:59.699
doing with his lead form and trail
00:05:59.699 --> 00:06:04.169
shoulder now if we look at Ricky what if
00:06:04.169 --> 00:06:07.379
we draw that same line up against his
00:06:07.379 --> 00:06:09.870
forehead what you'll see is that during
00:06:09.870 --> 00:06:12.750
transition his shallowing movement is
00:06:12.750 --> 00:06:15.149
going to happen more from his upper body
00:06:15.149 --> 00:06:18.960
working away and from hand drop and
00:06:18.960 --> 00:06:21.839
creating depth not so much from the arms
00:06:21.839 --> 00:06:24.649
shallowing so while there is a
00:06:24.649 --> 00:06:26.789
significant plane shift I think
00:06:26.789 --> 00:06:29.460
comparing him to Sergio is actually
00:06:29.460 --> 00:06:31.800
comparing drastically different
00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:34.469
movements but similar flesh shaft
00:06:34.469 --> 00:06:36.479
position since their transitions are
00:06:36.479 --> 00:06:38.159
different you'll see that through the
00:06:38.159 --> 00:06:39.630
release
00:06:39.630 --> 00:06:41.040
they have very different looking
00:06:41.040 --> 00:06:43.760
movements as well you can see
00:06:43.760 --> 00:06:45.900
differences in the arm extension
00:06:45.900 --> 00:06:47.610
direction you can see differences in the
00:06:47.610 --> 00:06:50.700
amount of rotation and side Bend and you
00:06:50.700 --> 00:06:53.190
can see pretty dramatic differences in
00:06:53.190 --> 00:06:56.580
the overall hand path now the other
00:06:56.580 --> 00:06:59.010
golfer who Riki is frequently compared
00:06:59.010 --> 00:07:02.520
to is Roy back Roy and the place where
00:07:02.520 --> 00:07:05.580
their comparison typically exists is in
00:07:05.580 --> 00:07:07.890
the straightening of that right leg in
00:07:07.890 --> 00:07:10.410
the little reverse hip movement during
00:07:10.410 --> 00:07:13.680
the release so you will see that both
00:07:13.680 --> 00:07:15.510
have a print out straightening of the
00:07:15.510 --> 00:07:19.020
legs and Rory does have the reverse hip
00:07:19.020 --> 00:07:21.630
movement and so does Ricky but I want to
00:07:21.630 --> 00:07:23.310
show you that there is a drastic
00:07:23.310 --> 00:07:25.200
difference in how they use their pelvis
00:07:25.200 --> 00:07:28.560
during the downswing so as we go up to
00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:31.680
the top of the swing I want you to key
00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:36.000
in on the amount of slide of the pelvis
00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.940
and more importantly the rate of slide
00:07:38.940 --> 00:07:41.640
of the pelvis what we'll see with Rory
00:07:41.640 --> 00:07:43.500
over here on the left is that he's going
00:07:43.500 --> 00:07:45.830
to shift over onto that left side
00:07:45.830 --> 00:07:48.590
relatively early in the downswing
00:07:48.590 --> 00:07:52.110
roughly by the time the hands are at
00:07:52.110 --> 00:07:55.770
about between shaft parallel and arm
00:07:55.770 --> 00:07:58.440
parallel and then what you'll see is
00:07:58.440 --> 00:08:00.780
because of the orientation of his pelvis
00:08:00.780 --> 00:08:03.420
being behind his foot when he goes to
00:08:03.420 --> 00:08:05.400
push through his legs it's going to
00:08:05.400 --> 00:08:08.490
cause his pelvis to brace and it's going
00:08:08.490 --> 00:08:11.240
to cause his pelvis to elevate
00:08:11.240 --> 00:08:13.380
lovely-looking pelvis movement when we
00:08:13.380 --> 00:08:16.560
look over here now when we look at Ricky
00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:18.450
he does create a lot of speeds we know
00:08:18.450 --> 00:08:21.300
he's using his legs but you'll see that
00:08:21.300 --> 00:08:23.610
his way slide pattern is going to be
00:08:23.610 --> 00:08:26.280
very different from more of the classic
00:08:26.280 --> 00:08:28.590
looking swinging of say and Adam Scott
00:08:28.590 --> 00:08:31.440
or Rory McIlroy well we'll see with
00:08:31.440 --> 00:08:34.130
Ricky is he's going to have some early
00:08:34.130 --> 00:08:37.229
hip slide but then what you'll see is
00:08:37.229 --> 00:08:39.630
his hips continue to slide the rest of
00:08:39.630 --> 00:08:42.780
the downswing so he doesn't move as far
00:08:42.780 --> 00:08:45.240
as early as someone like Rory McIlroy
00:08:45.240 --> 00:08:48.510
and so because this pelvis is working
00:08:48.510 --> 00:08:51.450
more across his body or in the direction
00:08:51.450 --> 00:08:52.370
of the target
00:08:52.370 --> 00:08:54.290
you'll see that as he approaches impact
00:08:54.290 --> 00:08:57.350
his pelvis is more on top of his foot
00:08:57.350 --> 00:09:01.460
than say a Roy McAvoy so as a result
00:09:01.460 --> 00:09:03.890
he's going to have all the bracing be
00:09:03.890 --> 00:09:06.260
vertical with his lower body and then
00:09:06.260 --> 00:09:08.000
he's going to have to brace more with
00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.160
his rib cage and shoulders it's not
00:09:10.160 --> 00:09:11.690
going to be able to brace with this
00:09:11.690 --> 00:09:14.300
whole sling the way that rory mcilroy is
00:09:14.300 --> 00:09:16.640
demonstrating so while it's tempting to
00:09:16.640 --> 00:09:19.670
compare similar looking shaft positions
00:09:19.670 --> 00:09:22.430
and group golfers that way I like to
00:09:22.430 --> 00:09:23.690
look at the different movements of
00:09:23.690 --> 00:09:27.350
transition and release and build the the
00:09:27.350 --> 00:09:29.210
categories of swings more around power
00:09:29.210 --> 00:09:31.490
sources and how you're controlling the
00:09:31.490 --> 00:09:34.820
path and face to path relationship when
00:09:34.820 --> 00:09:36.440
you do it that way what you'll see is
00:09:36.440 --> 00:09:39.800
that Ricky has a unique move that works
00:09:39.800 --> 00:09:41.060
great for him and he has some really
00:09:41.060 --> 00:09:44.690
good pieces you can see that he's done a
00:09:44.690 --> 00:09:47.690
lot of work both with his swing
00:09:47.690 --> 00:09:49.460
technique as well as in the gym in
00:09:49.460 --> 00:09:51.260
strengthening the connection between his
00:09:51.260 --> 00:09:53.420
pelvis and his rib cage and that's
00:09:53.420 --> 00:09:56.630
resulted in some better play so if you
00:09:56.630 --> 00:09:58.220
like the way we break these swings down
00:09:58.220 --> 00:10:00.320
and you'd like to have your swing broken
00:10:00.320 --> 00:10:01.910
down or you'd have liked to have a
00:10:01.910 --> 00:10:04.040
certain golfer analyzed please don't
