Swing Extender for Shaft Rotation

A classic drill for helping you train a release that uses more shaft rotation instead of in-plane shaft movement to square the club face.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,000
In this video, we're going to use a swing extender to work on shaft rotation.

00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So there are, as you know from some of my other videos, there are a couple major ways

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:11,000
to square the face.

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:15,000
One being in plain shaft movement that kind of looks like this, and the other being shaft

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:20,000
rotation or the motorcycle movement, getting the club face to twist compared to the direction

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:21,000
that it's swinging.

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:28,000
As the more that you want to have kind of leg and and shaft lean, the more you need shaft

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:31,000
rotation to square the club face.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:36,000
So one way to eliminate using in-plane movement as a way of squaring the club face is to use

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:38,000
a shaft extender.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:43,000
Now there are commercial models available that kind of stick in the end of the club, or you

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:48,000
can take an old club and kind of cut a hole so you can stick an alignment stick right

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:52,000
through the bottom, or you can take an old shaft and stick it in.

00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:53,000
I've used that.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:01:00,000
Since I don't use a ton of training aids for a high volume of reps, I kind of like to

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:03,000
use it to get a sensation and then move away from it.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:06,000
I like to make my own, I don't like to buy it a whole lot.

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:11,000
So to make your own shaft extender, you're just going to take an alignment stick and you're

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:13,000
going to put it along the bottom of the grip.

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:17,000
It'll feel almost like one of those ribbed grips that has kind of more of a triangular

00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:20,000
bottom as opposed to a real round grip.

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:26,000
So what this does is it forces the club to stay outside my body.

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:31,000
So if I was to use that shaft rotation to try to square the club face, I'm going to hit

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:33,000
myself on the side.

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:40,000
Now eventually I'm going to hit myself on the side, somewhere if we keep the club outside

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:44,000
the hands, somewhere right around shaft parallel we're going to hit ourselves on the

00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:45,000
side.

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:51,000
It really depends on what length of swing you're taking as to if you're going to not

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:56,000
touch yourself at all or if you're going to just kind of barely hit yourself on the

00:01:56,000 --> 00:01:57,000
side.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:05,000
So you can using that little shaft extender so the alignment stick you take your grip

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:11,000
and we're going to do just a little 9 to 3 movement and trying to get the golf ball to

00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:18,000
start straight or left while keeping my upper body in good tilt and behind the golf

00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:19,000
ball.

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:27,000
Because if I want to use the shaft in plain shaft movement in order to get the club face

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:30,000
to square, you saw on that one I hit myself pretty good.

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:32,000
It would look kind of like that.

00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:38,000
As opposed to if I'm using more of the shaft rotation to get it to start straight it

00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:43,000
will look kind of like that and I can actually do these shots where it never completely

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:45,000
hits me into my side.

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:51,000
Now you see I have another version over there where if you find that this is very beneficial

00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:58,000
for you you can make one that's a little bit more permanent by taking the O alignment

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:03,000
thick and hopefully the the smaller and the lighter you can find the better and then stick

00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:09,000
it so that it's about a foot down below the grip and then put tape at two different places.

00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:14,000
So now it's just going to be a little bit more permanent and stable so that if I was

00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:19,000
to hit it I don't have to like you know it's not going to come out of my hands or anything

00:03:19,000 --> 00:03:20,000
like that.

00:03:20,000 --> 00:03:28,000
So again I'm working on getting that face to rotate so that I can hit the straight while

00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:37,000
still kind of having my body rotate in good position like that as opposed to what a lot

00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:42,000
of people do is use that in plain shaft movement with their body standing up.

00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:50,000
So they've used these shaft extenders for a long period of time to solve this club

00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:54,000
face as it relates to the release problem.

00:03:54,000 --> 00:04:00,000
The main issue I have is you can't take really big swings because as you come through

00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:05,000
eventually that is going to hit me when I get past right around here this is going to

00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:14,000
hit my side so unless I can take a bigger swing and really just stop like that then I'm

00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:18,000
going to have a hard time putting a whole lot of speed and power but for some golfers this

00:04:18,000 --> 00:04:24,000
can be really helpful for getting kind of a feeling and then you can take that feeling

00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:31,000
and now I know exactly kind of what that feels like I can kind of use that visual and

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:38,000
imagine that shaft sticking out of the bottom of the grip as I work on some of those release

00:04:38,000 --> 00:04:39,000
movement.

00:04:39,000 --> 00:04:46,000
So now I can go trying to get that same feeling working on that same kind of release

00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:47,000
pattern.

00:04:47,000 --> 00:04:50,000
That was a little better.

00:04:50,000 --> 00:04:58,000
So then if I want to try to get it to start even more to the left I can really rotate that

00:04:58,000 --> 00:05:01,000
club instead of using the in-plane shaft movement.

00:05:01,000 --> 00:05:06,000
So if you're struggling with your release and you tend to have more of a look of this

00:05:06,000 --> 00:05:13,000
through impact you can see if I had that shaft sticking out here that would have to go

00:05:13,000 --> 00:05:14,000
through me.

00:05:14,000 --> 00:05:19,000
This forces you to keep that shaft on the outside and then your goal is to figure out how

00:05:19,000 --> 00:05:24,000
to make it so that the ball doesn't go right and you'll do that by using a good release

00:05:24,000 --> 00:05:26,000
and rotating the shaft.

00:05:26,000 --> 00:05:30,000
If you find that you do this and you hit a lot of fat shots then it means that you probably

00:05:30,000 --> 00:05:36,000
need to work on the wipe and low point control not so much the face rotation aspect.

00:05:36,000 --> 00:05:41,000
So from the face on you're going to grip it so that the alignment sticks out about

00:05:41,000 --> 00:05:47,000
a foot lower than the grip kind of like this and pretty close to in line with the bottom

00:05:47,000 --> 00:05:49,000
of the grip.

00:05:49,000 --> 00:05:55,000
That way you can see that if I took a swing and if I released it it's going to hit me.

00:05:55,000 --> 00:06:01,000
So a good one would look kind of more like this where it didn't hit me until the club

00:06:01,000 --> 00:06:09,000
was at least parallel and a bad one would look kind of like this where I felt it really

00:06:09,000 --> 00:06:12,000
hit my side right at impact.

00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:18,000
So you can either use kind of the handheld version that way you can quickly switch in and

00:06:18,000 --> 00:06:25,000
out or you could have your training aid kind of already set up and you can switch clubs

00:06:25,000 --> 00:06:26,000
pretty quickly.

00:06:26,000 --> 00:06:37,000
So again taped about in a foot below the grip just like so and then trying to make these

00:06:37,000 --> 00:06:43,000
movements where it doesn't hit you until pretty close to that follow through position

00:06:43,000 --> 00:06:48,000
and that's why you'll see if I was to take a bigger swing it's going to hit me just

00:06:48,000 --> 00:06:50,000
because I'm going to make it pass that point.

00:06:50,000 --> 00:06:58,000
So this is really only good for doing impact training really working on kind of that feeling

00:06:58,000 --> 00:07:01,000
of the bottom of the swing right through there.

00:07:01,000 --> 00:07:04,000
Doesn't do too well when you're working it into transition.
