Thick Black Line Roll - Putting

One of my go to moves for assessing the quality of a putting stroke is simply hitting putts with a ball with a line on it. If the line wobbles, something went wrong and speed control will be tough. If you are part of the minority that does not line up the ball when you putt, then this isn’t the best gague because you will have a hard time getting your putter face and the golf ball lined up and square. If that’s the case, then you’ll have to use the other techniques for assessing sweet spot control, like the impact tape or the gate drill. If you do use the line look to see that you get a dark, thick, narrow line that rolls end over end. If the line is blurry or excessively thick, then you know that your put- ter face was not square or you missed the sweetspot. Please review Pillar #2 on start- ing the putt online in particular the lower body stability and the single arm release drills.

Okay, the next drill that will help just generally assess how well you're making contact with the ball is we are going to take a range ball or you could take a regular golf ball and draw a thick black line around the equator.

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:29,000
So here's the golf ball. You got the line right there. I'm just going to place this on the ground so that it's pointed straight up. I'm not aiming at a hole or anything because all I'm going to do is assess how well I can roll this ball straight.

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:38,000
If I roll it straight, what you will see is that as it rolls, that line will go end over end and it will look like there's a thick black line on top.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:47,000
If I hit it either on the toe or the heel or if I hit it with the putter face too far open because remember that was a prerequisite to getting it into the speed class.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:56,000
So if the putter face is not square and I don't hit it in the center, I'm going to get some wobbles. So we'll see how well I can do on this one.

00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:18,000
So you get set up and you can see that putter line pretty much rolling end over end as it goes. Now just as a demonstration, I will purposely hit this next one way out on the toe as much on the toe as I can.

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:36,000
So you'll see that it's wobbling some. Now I hit it slow so that you can see that. If you were to hit this ball with a slightly open or slightly closed club face, you will see even more wobbles.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:45,000
Some of you are probably going to see a ball that wobbles a whole lot. So this is a great just general feedback to see if you're rolling the ball really well.

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:53,000
If not, go back and check one of the how to start a ball straight online videos to make sure that you are getting the ball the roll properly.

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:58,000
Okay, so this is a good one for combining speed as well as starting the ball online.
