Three Quarter Follow Through - Wedges

A 3/4 follow through on your distance wedges helps with a few key areas to that pattern. It helps control trajectory and spin, ensures that you used more of a cast pattern, and prevents you from swinging too hard for the wedge shots.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,000
This distance wedge drill is three-quarter follow-through. So you'll notice when you're watching

00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:12,000
Torpros on TV when they get inside about 150 yards especially on really fast greens,

00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:18,000
you'll tend to see a little bit more of a hold-off movement to their full swing.

00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:23,000
So this is usually, let's say, eight iron in below, but particularly for the wedges.

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:29,000
So whether when it's kind of a full swing, you'll tend to see a lot of these three-quarter

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:34,000
follow-throughs. And that tends to produce the spin rate where you're going to have a little

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:39,000
bit more of a one-hop and stop as opposed to going all out. You'll tend to have really

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:44,000
higher, you'll tend to have the higher spin rates which on those quick greens you can spin

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:49,000
the ball back more than you would want. So this helps them with trajectory control, this helps

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:56,000
them with their spin and ultimately helps them with distance control or proximity at all.

00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:02,000
Now one of the reasons that they're able to do this is when it gets to the shorter end

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:07,000
when we're working on the wedges, it's a little bit more of this cast pattern. So this cast

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:14,000
pattern will tend to have a little bit earlier arm and shoulder movement kind of like

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:20,000
so with a little bit more of the upper body lunging on top of it. And so that combination

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:26,000
has the club passed my body a little bit quicker or a little bit quicker sooner in the

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:33,000
follow-through. And by having my arms start early, my feeling is almost more like it's just kind

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:38,000
of coasting through impact. As opposed to the the stock tour swing or the driver swing, we're

00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:45,000
going to have more of that leg and kind of downswing loading. When I have that leg and downswing

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:50,000
loading, I'm going to end up having so much speed down at the bottom that it would be very

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:56,000
difficult for me to actually go past or it would be very difficult for me to stop in this three

00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:01,000
quarter position. The momentum of the club is going to help carry everything to a full

00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:07,000
follow-through. The other thing that you'll notice, the other thing that you may struggle with

00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:13,000
if you're trying to work on these a little bit more three quarter follow-through, is if you tend to

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:21,000
really re-hinge and use the risk very actively kind of like this down at the bottom, you'll see that

00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:27,000
that tends to bring the club well up past that three quarter position. So making sure that you have

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:33,000
that good on hinge in that follow-through will help make holding it off or controlling the

00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:39,000
spin or getting that three quarter follow-through a little bit easier. So walking through it in slow

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:45,000
motion, you'll see during the the backswing pivot, I make sure I've got a little bit more of that

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:50,000
one inch lean like we talk about here in the distance section where it's going a little bit more

00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:58,000
towards the target a little bit less of a driver load and then as I start down there's a little

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:04,000
bit more of that lunge as my arm straightened and then as I get down towards the bottom everything

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:11,000
kind of releases and works together on the way through as opposed to having more of that

00:03:11,000 --> 00:03:17,000
bracing that comes from that proximal to distal loading or that kinematic sequence thing. So

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:24,000
then working through kind of a full speed more neutral ball position up or body just a little bit

00:03:25,000 --> 00:03:32,000
nose just on top of the golf ball. A little bit more of that three quarter follow-through

00:03:32,000 --> 00:03:38,000
to help control the spin. Now it's not imperative that you stop absolutely a three quarter but

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:43,000
you notice as I do it those arms tend to just stay long on the way through as opposed to having

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:50,000
a ton of that leg and letting them whip past like I would do more with the stock full swing especially

00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:53,000
with the longer clubs.
