Trail hand shadow is similar to open trail hand, except it allows no input from the trail hand. However, even though it involves no input from the hand, the trail side of the body must work correctly in order to stay close to the lead hand. If you struggle with an overly dominant trail hand, use this drill to create balance.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
The drill is left arm swings right arm shadow.
00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:07,000
So I'd like to do a lot of these splitting hands
00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:09,000
when we're doing the release training.
00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:13,000
And you can typically see when a person has a release issue,
00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:17,000
when either there's a lot of kind of bending narrowing
00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:20,000
or not really good bracing patterns.
00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:23,000
But a lot of golfers struggle with the release
00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:27,000
because they tend to be too much trailside dominant.
00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:30,000
There are many good golfers where the trailhand
00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:34,000
actually comes slightly off the grip during the hitting zone.
00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:38,000
And but I haven't seen any really good golfers
00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:39,000
where the lead hand comes off the grip.
00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:44,000
So at the very least, you need your hands to be working together
00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:46,000
at the other end of the spectrum.
00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:48,000
You could be almost lead side totally
00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:50,000
and still be a pretty good golfer.
00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:57,000
So this lead hand hitting with the trailhand being a shadow
00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:00,000
works really well for golfers who tend to have a little bit
00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:03,000
more of a right side release that gets into kind of this
00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:06,000
little chicken wing style finish look.
00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:10,000
Because you will rarely see when you're hitting these one arm
00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:14,000
left hand only, you'll rarely see that same amount of bending
00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:18,000
or bracing or kind of breaking the elbow or a chicken wing.
00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:20,000
So what we're going to do for this drill
00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:22,000
is you're going to take your right hand
00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:26,000
and you're going to put it within a couple inches of the grip
00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:27,000
but not actually on the grip.
00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:30,000
So this is kind of a cousin to the open trailhand
00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:34,000
where I'm working on how the right hand pushes against the grip.
00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:38,000
So I'm going to keep those in space
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:41,000
and I'm just going to try to have that right hand
00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:43,000
follow the left hand very closely
00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:46,000
as I do some of these left arm single arm drills.
00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:49,000
Many golfers are going to feel either the right side
00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:53,000
continuing rotating a little bit more shoulder activity
00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:56,000
abective or you may struggle
00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:00,000
and you'll find that your body just wants to stall
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:03,000
in order to let that right hand really square the club face.
00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:05,000
So this is a good kind of awareness drill
00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:09,000
for feeling how the weed arm can control the release
00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:12,000
and how the trail arm would have to support that
00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:15,000
or how the trail side of the body would have to support it
00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:17,000
if you're hitting more of these left arm only shots.
00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:19,000
So the way I would work through this drill,
00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:22,000
I'm going to hit a few just lead arm only.
00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:28,000
And then I'm going to take my trail hand and put it
00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:29,000
just off the grip.
00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:33,000
So I'm basically doing that lead hand only
00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:35,000
and then taking the trail hand and placing it just off the grip
00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:39,000
so I can get a sense of where I'm going to try
00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:42,000
to get in that follow through position.
00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:47,000
And then I can try and hit a lead hand only shot
00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:48,000
while letting the right hand kind of follow.
00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:52,000
And this is definitely a little bit more of a mental puzzle
00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:55,000
for a lot of you because you've got to coordinate both sides
00:02:55,000 --> 00:02:58,000
of your brain making the right movement
00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:00,000
while hitting a golf bar while you're letting a golf ball
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:01,000
get in the way.
00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:04,000
But for a lot of you, that's actually a good challenge
00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:09,000
because it forces you to not really talk yourself through it
00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:10,000
but you just have to feel it and just kind of trust it
00:03:10,000 --> 00:03:12,000
and go with it.
00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:14,000
So I'm going to do the left hand open
00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:18,000
or sorry, the left hand, single arm with a right hand
00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:24,000
shot shadow where basically I'm trying to just let that right hand
00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:26,000
follow that left hand motion.
00:03:26,000 --> 00:03:31,000
Once I have a feeling or a concept of what it feels like
00:03:31,000 --> 00:03:34,000
to kind of lead it, now I'm going to put my right hand on
00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:36,000
but I'm going to put it on very softly
00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:40,000
and I'm going to feel like I hit this more
00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:42,000
with my left hand emphasis.
00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:45,000
What I tend to see when I have golfers do this
00:03:45,000 --> 00:03:47,000
is hitting more with this left hand emphasis,
00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:52,000
you'll almost never see someone go into a chicken wing style motion.
00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:54,000
You'll tend to see a really good arm extension
00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:58,000
and then the challenge is getting bigger swing
00:03:58,000 --> 00:04:00,000
so going from waist height to up to three quarter
00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:03,000
and then up to full swing and then adding intensity
00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:08,000
or at each position, adding intensity and feeling like I can swing hard
00:04:08,000 --> 00:04:13,000
from that with that left hand being a little bit more in control.
00:04:13,000 --> 00:04:16,000
So if you're struggling with your kind of chicken wing
00:04:16,000 --> 00:04:21,000
or the release and you're having trouble especially when you swing hard
00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:23,000
play around with this drill and put some of the intensity
00:04:23,000 --> 00:04:28,000
into what the lead hand is doing sometimes that helps overcome
00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:30,000
trying to control it with the trail hand.
00:04:30,000 --> 00:04:33,000
If that doesn't work, you can always try the trail hand
00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:36,000
only solid drills and really work on the control pattern
00:04:36,000 --> 00:04:38,000
but sometimes this is a much faster fix
00:04:38,000 --> 00:04:40,000
for being able to take it to the course.
