Using Training Aids - Putting

There are some good putting aids out there, but in general, golfers who purchase them will overuse them for and lose the benefits that they can instill. It's not muscle memory, it's an engram. Once the brain is no longer engaged, it doesn't count.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,000
I get a lot of questions about things like the putting arc and training aids for putting.

00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:11,000
And as you've noticed, most of these drills, I'm not very, I'm not very fond of

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:13,000
training aids in general.

00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:16,000
And the reason is it's kind of like having the answer sheet sitting next to you while you're

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:18,000
taking a test.

00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:23,000
It can be good in the very early stages of learning, but I've seen way too many players,

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:29,000
especially juniors, get obsessed with being good on a training aid and not developing a proper

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:31,000
feel or using it correctly.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:37,000
So training aids should be used as a feedback tool potentially after the fact.

00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:41,000
So here I've got a, I'll show you what I mean by after the fact.

00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:46,000
Here I've got the learning curve, which is similar to the putting arc, it's stand at least

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:47,000
training device.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:51,000
I like it, I think it's a pretty good, pretty good little tool.

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:57,000
So if I was having trouble making a good arcing motion with my body connection and

00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:02,000
stuff, I would, I would take some strokes just letting the heel of the putter kind of

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:06,000
slide along this arc or on this incline plane.

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:11,000
And because it's on incline plane, the putter moves in along the arc just like the putting

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:12,000
arc.

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:16,000
But I prefer this the putting arc because the putting arc is straight up and down where

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:19,000
this one is on the actual swing plane.

00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:23,000
So I would then use this as a feedback tool.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:30,000
So I might step away from the object and hit a few puts and then step over to the object

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:34,000
and say, okay, that felt about the same.

00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:40,000
Rather than setting up the ball on the actual learning curve and hitting puts with it

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:45,000
forcing me to do it correctly, if you have an object that's forcing you to do it correctly,

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:48,000
I can guarantee you that it's not going to transfer onto the course.

00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:54,000
There's a lot of research and motor learning that says that that does not transfer very well.

00:01:54,000 --> 00:02:01,000
But this one's fun because I like it both as the incline plane and actually more specifically,

00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:03,000
I like the arc on the inside.

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:08,000
So you can take a look here and basically there are lines that show the angle that the

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:15,000
putter face would be if it is square to this normal curve for, I believe it's a 68 degree

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:18,000
putter, it could be very wrong on that though.

00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:27,000
But basically, if you were to set up to this like so and make a proper stroke on the way

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:31,000
through, this would show you the angle that the putter face should be at.

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:36,000
So again, I'm not a big fan of hitting a ton of puts on it, but if I was to hit some

00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:43,000
puts over here and then come forward and just use it as a check, well it'll be a very

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:48,000
good tool for helping you fine tune if your putter face and putter path are correct.

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:52,000
But I don't think it's a great tool for learning them, I think it's a great tool for fine

00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:56,000
tuning them once you kind of have a good idea of what you should be doing.

00:02:56,000 --> 00:03:00,000
So use the drills that I showed you in order to build your repeatable putter face and putter

00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:04,000
path, but then you can use objects like the learning curve or the puttingter arc if you

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:10,000
really want to confirm that what you're doing is specific and as detailed as you need

00:03:10,000 --> 00:03:11,000
it to me.

00:03:11,000 --> 00:03:14,000
So that's my take on the putting training aids, not a huge fan, but if you're going to use

00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:16,000
them, that's how I would use them.
